Steam does not automatically turn a US-dollar price into yuan at the day’s exchange rate. Each developer or publisher chooses prices for supported currencies and region groups, using Steamworks’ optional conversion guidance or its own commercial judgment. China uses Chinese Renminbi (CNY, commonly called yuan), and Valve’s current tax table lists China at 6% VAT. Those facts explain the framework, but they do not predict the yuan price of any particular game.
What determines a game’s Steam price in China?
Steam regional pricing is a publisher-controlled system. Steamworks lets a partner enter and manage prices for each currency and region group. Valve’s documentation puts the decision plainly: “Pricing decisions on Steam are entirely in the hands of you the developer.” The platform supplies tools, reference data and a review process; it does not impose one universal formula that every game must follow.
That is why two games with the same US list price can have different Chinese prices, and why a single game can remain unchanged in China even when exchange rates move. A publisher may use a suggested conversion, adjust the result for local affordability, keep a familiar round-number price, or choose a different strategy for a premium, indie or free-to-play release.
Steam’s scale of currencies and regions
Valve’s Steamworks pricing documentation listed 37 currencies and four region groups when retrieved on October 13, 2026. A currency entry and a region group are related but not interchangeable: a publisher supplies values for the markets in which its game is sold, and Steam applies the resulting storefront rules to the customer’s geography.

China should also be separated from other Chinese-speaking markets. Mainland China uses CNY. Hong Kong uses Hong Kong dollars, and Taiwan uses New Taiwan dollars. A price shown in one of those currencies is not evidence of the price that applies to a mainland Chinese account.
The three Steamworks pricing methods
Steamworks’ regional-pricing tools describe three ways a publisher can compare or generate suggested prices. The methods are guidance, not mandatory rules. The regional-pricing explorer says its public-data calculations are based on information available as of October 2026.

The same base price can therefore lead to three different suggestions. A publisher can inspect those comparisons, decide that none fits its audience or business model, and enter another value. Steam’s explorer states that the prices entered for each currency and region group are up to the developer.

What CNY means on Steam
Steamworks lists CNY as a live supported currency and identifies it as Chinese Renminbi, also called yuan. The documentation describes amounts as being reported in fen, the subdivision of the renminbi. Support for CNY means Steam can display and process a yuan-denominated price where the publisher has supplied one; it does not mean every title has the same conversion or that every title must use a CNY listing.
When you view a game while Steam recognizes your account’s mainland Chinese store geography, the storefront can present the publisher’s China price in CNY. The number is the result of the publisher’s price entry and Steam’s regional-commerce rules, not a live foreign-exchange quote generated for your individual checkout.

Why a Chinese price can be cheaper, equal to, or higher than a direct conversion
Direct exchange conversion answers only one question: what would the base price equal at a particular exchange rate? Regional pricing answers a broader commercial question: what price should this game have in a specific market?
- Affordability: Local purchasing-power data can support a lower nominal price than a straight dollar-to-yuan conversion.
- Comparable entertainment: A publisher may consider what customers commonly spend on other games and entertainment products in China.
- Positioning: A premium release, a niche simulation and a small independent game may target different willingness-to-pay levels.
- Commercial goals: A publisher can prioritize volume, revenue per sale, launch recovery, regional parity or a particular price point.
- Price maintenance: A company may avoid changing a familiar local price every time the exchange rate moves.
These factors explain why inferring a China price from a US list price alone is unreliable. A calculator can show an exchange-rate equivalent, but it cannot reproduce a publisher’s decisions about purchasing power, comparable entertainment spending, taxes or market strategy.
China’s tax treatment in the Steamworks documentation
Valve’s Steamworks Taxes FAQ lists China at a 6% tax rate in its current table, retrieved October 13, 2026. The figure should be read as Valve’s published rate at that date; tax law, collection duties and platform treatment can change.
The same FAQ says Steam prices are VAT-inclusive in countries where Valve collects VAT and that Valve remits collected tax to the relevant authorities. Consequently, a displayed storefront price in a VAT-collecting market is not necessarily a pre-tax amount to which a buyer should add another 6% at checkout. The exact treatment depends on the applicable market and Valve’s current collection rules.
Tax is only one input in the final number. It does not turn the 6% figure into a universal formula for converting a US price into CNY, and it does not establish that every game’s China price is six percent above or below a particular exchange-rate result.

How publishers add or change a China price
Developers and publishers use Steamworks to set initial prices and propose adjustments. Valve says its review of initial prices and proposed price changes usually takes one or two business days. The review checks for input errors, but Valve also warns that it cannot guarantee that every error will be caught.
- Choose the game’s base commercial plan. The partner decides the launch price, discount strategy and the markets in which the title will be sold.
- Open the Steamworks pricing controls. The partner enters prices for the currencies and region groups relevant to the product.
- Compare conversion references. Steamworks can show exchange-rate, purchasing-power and multi-variable comparisons. These are decision aids, not required values.
- Set the CNY amount. The partner selects the yuan price that fits its strategy and verifies the unit and currency carefully.
- Submit for Valve’s review. Initial prices and proposed adjustments normally receive review within one or two business days.
- Verify the published storefront. Because the review is not a guarantee of catching every mistake, the partner should check the live regional display after approval.
A change can therefore be deliberate, corrective or part of a wider price update. A customer seeing a new CNY number should not assume that the US price changed by the same percentage.
How to read the price you see as a buyer
Check the currency, not just the digits
Confirm that the amount is marked CNY or yuan. The same numeric figure has a different meaning in dollars, euros, Hong Kong dollars and New Taiwan dollars. Currency labels are especially important when comparing screenshots, listings or prices viewed from different store geographies.
Use the storefront price as the relevant amount
The price shown for your account’s eligible store region is the publisher’s regional listing, subject to Steam’s checkout and tax rules. A third-party exchange-rate calculation is only a comparison. It cannot establish what a game should cost in China.
Expect game-by-game differences
There is no single China multiplier that applies to every title. Two games from the same publisher can have different CNY prices because they were priced at different times, target different audiences or use different commercial plans.

Geography, account location and regional restrictions
Regional pricing is intended for the geography to which it applies. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says: “You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to order or purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose.”
That rule covers attempts to obtain another region’s price by misrepresenting residence or using technical methods to disguise location. Regional pricing should be understood as a market-specific storefront arrangement, not as a lawful discount-hunting technique. Content restrictions and purchase eligibility can also be separate from the numerical price, so a price comparison alone does not establish that a title can be bought or played in every location.
Steam China is not the same topic as CNY regional pricing
Steamworks maintains separate documentation about Steam China and points developers toward Perfect World as a potential local Chinese publishing partner. That publishing context should not be conflated with the ordinary explanation of how a publisher enters a CNY price in Steamworks.
The available Valve documentation does not establish a complete, current comparison of Steam China and the ordinary Steam storefront’s consumer catalog, access conditions or purchase mechanics. Treat claims about those subjects as separate questions requiring current, specific evidence. The existence of a CNY listing on the regular Steam storefront does not, by itself, describe the catalog or operation of the separate Steam China publishing program.

Common misconceptions
Steam sets every regional price automatically
Steam provides conversion tools and reviews submissions, but the partner chooses the entered value. Automatic suggestions are not the same as an imposed price.

China’s price is simply the US price multiplied by today’s exchange rate
Exchange-rate conversion is only one of the three comparison methods. Purchasing power, comparable entertainment spending and publisher strategy can produce a different amount.
CNY support means all Chinese markets use yuan
CNY identifies mainland Chinese renminbi. Hong Kong and Taiwan use different currencies and can have separate regional listings.
The 6% tax figure predicts the checkout increase
Valve’s 6% entry is a published China rate in its current tax table. Where Valve collects VAT, its FAQ says displayed prices are VAT-inclusive, so the number should not automatically be added again.

The separate developer and publishing documentation does not, by itself, provide a complete current account of Steam China’s consumer catalog or access mechanics.
A practical way to compare prices without drawing the wrong conclusion
- Record the exact currency and region shown for each listing.
- Note the date of each observation, because publishers can revise prices and exchange rates move.
- Calculate a direct exchange-rate equivalent only as a benchmark.
- Do not treat the benchmark as the publisher’s recommended or required China price.
- Check whether you are comparing mainland China with Hong Kong, Taiwan or another region.
- Read the storefront and account terms that apply to your own geography rather than attempting to obtain a price assigned to somewhere else.
This method separates measurable currency arithmetic from the policy and commercial choices that create an actual Steam regional price.
