A Steam Frame reservation or waitlist signup is not a completed purchase. A reservation email means Valve is holding a device for you temporarily and will later send a purchase invitation; you then have 72 hours to check out. A waitlist email means you were placed behind the initial reservation queue. As of October 17, 2026, the September 17 randomization has already occurred, so the original signup window should not be treated as currently open without checking Valve’s live Steam Frame page.
Steam Frame status at a glance

The important distinction is that “reserved” describes a place in Valve’s allocation process, not ownership of a headset. Until checkout is completed, Valve can release the allocation if the purchase deadline expires or you cancel.
Who could sign up and when
Account and purchase requirements
Valve’s Steam Frame Signup FAQ required an eligible Steam account in good standing and at least one Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026. Signups were limited to one per household. Valve said it would use the payment method, shipping address and other information to identify and remove multiple entries.
The one-time randomization
At signup, applicants selected either the 256GB or 1TB Steam Frame. Each capacity had its own list. Valve randomized both model lists on September 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific time. Entries made after that one-time randomization were placed at the back of the waitlist rather than inserted into the randomized group. Because that date has passed, anyone checking availability now should rely on the live Steam page for any new enrollment rules or production announcements.

Regional lists
Valve separated the process into lists for North America, the United Kingdom and European Union, and Australia. Your shipping destination determined which regional list you entered. Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong customers were directed to Valve’s official distributor, Komodo, for ordering information. Valve said shipping to South Korea would come later, but the FAQ did not give a date for that later availability.
How Valve’s queue is organized
There is not one worldwide line. Queue placement is tied to both the storage model and the shipping region. A 256GB applicant is therefore on a different list from a 1TB applicant in the same region, and neither list should be assumed to have identical inventory or timing in another region.

Valve said it chose randomization to avoid a launch race dominated by bots, fast connections and people able to refresh at exactly the right moment. In its official FAQ, Valve explained: “We wanted to create a system that would be less frustrating and more fair for everyone. A launch that starts at a specific day and time tends to reward bots, people with fast internet connections, talented gaming fingers for quick F5/refresh reactions, and those who can schedule their life around that moment.” That is Valve’s explanation of the policy, not an independent measurement of fairness or of anyone’s odds.

The FAQ provides no population count, probability, or model-by-model estimate of queue chances. Do not infer better odds from the storage capacity, your signup time, or another region’s invitation activity.
What a reservation email means
Valve’s wording that you are “in the reservation queue” means the company has allocated a Steam Frame for you to purchase when your turn reaches the front of the active list. It does not mean the payment has been taken or that the order is complete.

The 72-hour purchase deadline
Valve said it will send a later email with the option to purchase. From that purchase invitation, you have 72 hours to complete the transaction. If you do not finish within the stated window, Valve cancels the reservation and moves on to the next person.
- Keep the Steam account email used for signup accessible and check its spam or filtered folders.
- Open the purchase invitation and confirm that the model and shipping region match the selection you made.
- Complete Valve’s checkout before the 72-hour window expires; beginning checkout without submitting payment does not establish a completed purchase.
- Save the resulting order confirmation. Until this step is complete, treat the device as an allocation awaiting purchase, not as a paid order.
What happens if you do not buy
Missing the deadline, declining the offer or otherwise failing to complete checkout causes Valve to cancel the reservation and continue down the list. The released unit is not held indefinitely for the original recipient.

A waitlist email means your randomized position was behind the number of devices available for the initial reservation queue. You do not currently have a Steam Frame reserved under that status.
How a waitlist place can advance
If someone with a reservation cancels or fails to purchase within 72 hours, Valve may move waitlisted customers into the reservation queue and notify them. Valve also says future production runs will be offered in waitlist order if the initial allocation is exhausted.
Why another person may receive an invitation first
Valve says it will exhaust the reservation queue for a particular list before sending purchase emails to that list’s waitlist. An invitation that appears to arrive earlier may belong to a different storage model or shipping region, so it is not evidence that your own place was skipped.

A waitlist position is not a guaranteed delivery date. The FAQ does not publish a personal position number, a current unit count or a final date for future production.

Can you change the model, region or queue decision?
Changing storage capacity
After randomization and the status email, Valve says you cannot switch between the 256GB and 1TB models. If you cancel and later enter a new process, do not assume your original place or model selection will carry over.
Canceling a reservation
Canceling a reservation releases your spot. Valve can then offer that allocation to someone else, and you should not expect the canceled place to remain available if you change your mind.
Leaving the waitlist
Leaving the waitlist also releases your position. The FAQ does not promise that you can rejoin at the same place, so consider the loss of queue priority before opting out.
Accessories and the purchase context
Valve’s FAQ says its first-party power supply, Accessories Replacement Kit and Ergonomic Accessories Kit are available only to customers purchasing Steam Frame through the add-to-cart process. That describes a purchase-context restriction; it does not establish that these items are independently orderable through retailers or that they have separate stock.

What is not established about current availability
Queue terminology should not be mistaken for a live inventory report. The official FAQ does not establish any of the following:
- How many units remain for a particular model or region.
- Your individual queue position or an estimated invitation date.
- A final shipping date for the initial reservation group.
- The date South Korean shipping will begin.
- Current retailer listings, prices or stock.
- Identical availability between North America, the United Kingdom/European Union and Australia.
Because queue movement, inventory, shipping territories, accessory terms and retailer listings can change, verify the current status on Valve’s official Steam Frame page and in the Steam account email associated with your signup before relying on an availability claim.

“I am in the reservation queue”
Interpret this as an allocation awaiting a purchase invitation. Do not treat it as a paid preorder. Keep access to the signup account ready and act within the 72-hour period once Valve sends the purchase email.
“I am on the waitlist”
Your initial randomized position was outside the first reservation allocation. You can advance if reservations are released, or you can be contacted in order from a future production run. A waitlist email alone does not reserve a unit.
You missed the 72-hour window
Valve’s stated policy is cancellation and movement to the next person. The FAQ does not promise reinstatement, so check your Steam status directly rather than assuming the invitation remains valid.

You want the other storage model
The model cannot be changed after randomization. Switching after receiving a status email is therefore not an available queue-management option under Valve’s stated rules.
You see invitations discussed in another country
Compare the shipping region and model before drawing conclusions. Separate lists operate independently, and Valve says Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong use Komodo ordering information while South Korean shipping is later.
A safe way to interpret “preorder availability”
Use the following decision sequence when a listing, message or forum post claims Steam Frame availability:
- Identify the status wording: reservation queue, waitlist or completed purchase.
- Check whether the message names the same storage model you selected.
- Confirm that the shipping destination belongs to the applicable regional process.
- If it is a reservation invitation, calculate the 72-hour deadline from the invitation and complete checkout before it expires.
- Do not infer stock, delivery timing or queue odds from another person’s email, a different region or an unverified retailer page.
- Use Valve’s current official information for changes after the September 17, 2026 randomization.
The clearest rule is simple: a reservation is a time-limited opportunity to buy, a waitlist is a place behind that opportunity, and only a completed checkout represents a purchase.
