Steam Frame uses cameras built into the headset to estimate where you are looking, then steers more of the wireless stream’s image quality and encoding bandwidth toward that gaze point. This is foveated streaming: it changes how pixels are transmitted, not how much work the host PC does to render the game. The separate Track Dominant Eye Only setting lets you restrict tracking to one eye and choose a dominant eye for spectator view and screenshots. Valve’s public notes do not establish that this selected-eye preference determines which eye supplies the gaze estimate for foveated streaming.

What Steam Frame eye tracking is used for

Steam Frame’s primary documented use for eye tracking is gaze-directed foveated streaming. The headset’s internal cameras provide low-latency gaze information while you wear it. Steam then uses that live signal to place the highest-quality part of the streamed image where you are looking and spends fewer transmission resources on peripheral areas.

That matters because a wireless VR stream has to move a large image through a limited connection. Human vision is most sensitive in a relatively small central area, so the system can send very detailed pixels at the current gaze point while representing the rest of the field of view at lower quality. As your eyes move, the high-quality region moves with them.

Valve describes this as working across the user’s VR library. Valve engineer Jeremy Selan told PC Gamer that developers and partners do not have to add special game support to benefit from the streaming technique. That statement concerns the transmission system; it does not mean every application consumes raw gaze data or implements its own eye-aware gameplay.

How the gaze-to-stream process works

  1. Infrared or other internal camera sensors observe the eyes. The cited public material confirms that eye-tracking cameras are built into Steam Frame. It does not publish their resolution, sampling rate, accuracy, or optical design.
  2. The headset and runtime estimate your current gaze direction. The estimate is a live, low-latency signal rather than a one-time choice made in a menu. It is used to identify the part of the view that deserves the most detail at that moment.
  3. The streaming system allocates bits by region. More image quality and encoding capacity are directed to the gaze-centered region, while surrounding pixels receive fewer resources. This reallocates the wireless stream’s bandwidth; it does not remove the need for the host computer to render the scene.
  4. The displayed high-detail area follows your eyes. Because the target moves continuously, latency matters. A delayed estimate could place the detailed region behind your actual fixation, which is why Valve emphasizes low-latency tracking.

Valve’s product page says the technique “typically” provides an “over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” That is a Valve marketing claim, not an independent benchmark. The public page reviewed for this explanation does not state the test hardware, network conditions, game, resolution, or measurement method, so the figure should not be treated as a guaranteed multiplier for every setup.

The reported four-view stream arrangement

In a November 12, 2025 interview and hands-on report, PC Gamer quoted Selan describing a four-view arrangement:

  • Two lower-resolution views cover the full field of view.
  • Two higher-resolution fragments cover the gaze-centered area.

Combining those views lets the stream carry a high-fidelity representation where your eyes are focused without sending that same level of detail everywhere. Selan described the goal as sending “a very, very high-fidelity representation of the source data for where you’re looking” and spending “far fewer bits on the surrounding area.” This is an implementation description from a Valve engineer, not an independently measured bandwidth ratio or a promise that every network will deliver the same result.

Foveated streaming versus foveated rendering

The two terms sound similar but solve different bottlenecks. Foveated streaming changes the image data sent from the host PC to the headset. Foveated rendering changes where the game spends rendering work before an image is encoded or displayed.

Feature Foveated streaming Foveated rendering
Primary resource Wireless transmission bandwidth and stream encoding GPU rendering resources inside the game or runtime
What receives extra detail The region sent around the wearer’s current gaze The region rendered around the wearer’s current gaze
Where the game is rendered Still on the host PC at the game’s required workload On the host GPU, with rendering detail varied by region
Developer requirement Valve says partners do not have to do extra work to take advantage of the streaming feature Usually requires support in the game, engine, or runtime

A streamed game can therefore remain expensive for the PC even when the wireless link becomes more efficient. In some supported configurations, streaming-side and rendering-side foveation could coexist, but they are not interchangeable features. Eye tracking can guide both kinds of system in principle; Steam Frame’s documented headline use is the streaming side.

What “Track Dominant Eye Only” means

Valve’s SteamOS announcements describe an accessibility control named Track Dominant Eye Only. The related notes say that you can select a dominant eye and that the selected eye controls which eye is used for spectator view and screenshots. The same notes describe a way to limit eye tracking to one eye.

These are separate from the live gaze direction itself. A dominant-eye preference is a user setting; gaze direction is the continually changing signal used to place the high-quality streamed region. Valve’s public release note does not say that choosing the left or right eye makes foveated streaming read only that camera, nor does it explain whether the setting changes internal fusion or calibration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest interpretation is therefore narrow: the setting identifies the eye used for spectator output and screenshots, and the accessibility option can restrict tracking to one eye. It should not be advertised as a bandwidth switch, a rendering-quality control, an optical recalibration command, or a documented way to select the sole eye used by foveated streaming.

How to find the setting in SteamOS

Valve’s note gives this path:

  1. Open VR Settings.
  2. Choose General.
  3. Enable or open Track Dominant Eye Only.
  4. Select the eye you identify as dominant.

The release note says advanced settings must be enabled. SteamOS and SteamVR menus can move between beta and stable builds, so the wording or location may differ on your installation. If the option is missing, first expose advanced settings and check that SteamVR and SteamOS are on a build containing the feature. Do not infer from the menu’s presence that it changes the streaming algorithm; the documented effect remains spectator view and screenshots.

What happens when only one eye is tracked?

Restricting tracking to one eye can be useful as an accessibility choice when binocular tracking is uncomfortable or unreliable for a particular wearer. It also gives the system an explicit eye preference for the documented spectator and screenshot behavior.

However, the available notes do not specify how Steam Frame combines camera measurements when both eyes are enabled, how it handles disagreement between eyes, or whether one-eye mode changes latency or accuracy. They also do not state that one-eye mode improves foveated streaming. Treat it as a compatibility and accessibility setting rather than a performance tweak unless Valve publishes more detail.

Can games access Steam Frame eye-gaze data?

Yes, compatible applications can request eye-gaze data through documented interfaces, but support is opt-in at the application level. Valve’s Steamworks documentation identifies the OpenXR extension XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction for current eye-tracking support.

Valve also documents OpenVR functions for applications using that API:

  • GetEyeTrackingDataRelativeToNow retrieves eye-tracking data relative to the current time.
  • GetEyeTrackingDataForNextFrame retrieves data intended for the next frame.
  • The functions are used with an action whose type is eyetracking.

Those interfaces prove that a compatible application can ask for gaze information; they do not prove that every Steam game reads it, renders a gaze cursor, changes gameplay, or uses it for accessibility. A game must implement the relevant OpenXR or OpenVR path and decide what to do with the returned signal. Valve’s statement that developers need no extra work applies to foveated streaming, not to custom in-game eye-tracking features.

Eye openness is a different signal

SteamVR release notes also mention eye-openness information exposed through OSC when streaming from Steam Frame, with OpenVR SDK availability described as forthcoming at the time of those notes. Eye openness answers a different question from gaze direction: it indicates how open an eye is rather than where the user is looking.

What Steam Frame eye tracking does not currently document

The public material cited for this feature leaves several engineering details open:

  • Camera resolution and sensor type
  • Sampling or tracking rate
  • Accuracy, precision, and expected latency figures
  • The exact calibration procedure and recalibration triggers
  • How raw or derived eye data is stored, transmitted, or retained
  • How dominant-eye selection interacts internally with the gaze estimate used for foveated streaming

Those omissions matter when comparing headsets or making privacy and performance claims. Do not substitute specifications from another eye-tracking device, assume a particular retention policy, or promise a fixed accuracy figure without an authoritative Steam Frame document.

Practical implications for users

For wireless image quality

Eye tracking helps Steam Frame decide where to spend stream bits. It cannot create additional wireless capacity, repair a congested network, or make the host PC render a demanding game at a lower workload. If the link is unstable, the headset may still show compression, latency, or dropped quality even though the gaze allocator is functioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For screenshots and spectator output

The dominant-eye choice has a specifically documented consequence: it determines which eye is used for spectator view and screenshots. If those outputs appear to represent the unintended eye, revisit VR Settings → General → Track Dominant Eye Only with advanced settings enabled and choose the other eye.

For games and apps

Expect the headset-level streaming benefit without assuming that a game has eye-aware controls. Look for explicit OpenXR or OpenVR eye-tracking support in the application’s documentation before expecting gaze-based menus, aiming, accessibility input, or avatar behavior.

For troubleshooting an unavailable option

  • Confirm that advanced settings are visible in SteamVR.
  • Check whether the feature is present in the SteamOS or SteamVR build you are running; release-note features can change between beta versions.
  • Distinguish a missing spectator-eye option from a streaming problem. The former concerns the documented dominant-eye control; the latter concerns gaze-directed transmission.
  • Avoid changing the selected eye solely to seek higher stream quality, because Valve has not documented that effect.

The clearest way to think about the selected eye

There are three related but nonidentical concepts:

Concept What the available documentation establishes
Live gaze direction Used to steer the highest-quality region of foveated streaming.
Track Dominant Eye Only An accessibility control that can limit tracking to one eye.
Selected dominant eye Controls the eye used for spectator view and screenshots.

The third item is the one most likely to be misunderstood. “Selected eye” does not automatically mean “the only eye used by every eye-tracking subsystem.” Valve explicitly documents its spectator and screenshot effect, while leaving the internal relationship to foveated streaming unspecified.

Bottom line

Steam Frame eye tracking is chiefly a transmission technology: cameras in the headset provide low-latency gaze data, and foveated streaming spends more wireless image quality and encoding bandwidth where you are looking. The PC still renders the streamed game. Valve reports a four-view implementation and claims a typical improvement of more than 10x in image quality and effective bandwidth, but that figure lacks published test conditions and is not an independent benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The selected-eye control has a narrower, documented role. In VR Settings → General → Track Dominant Eye Only, with advanced settings enabled, you can restrict tracking to one eye and choose a dominant eye for spectator view and screenshots. Current public notes do not establish that this choice selects the sole eye used for foveated streaming, changes calibration, or improves performance.
