Steam’s “Concurrent Steam Users” figure is a platform-wide snapshot, not a count of everyone who used Steam during the past 48 hours. Valve displays a current reading and a peak for that window. Its game table reports different figures: each game’s current players and its peak today. Valve documents a connection limitation for the per-game Web API, but does not publish the full methodology behind the platform-wide counter.

What Steam’s concurrent-user number measures

On Valve’s Steam & Game Stats page, the platform-wide section is labeled “Concurrent Steam Users (most recent 48 hours).” It shows a current value and a peak value. “Concurrent” means the statistic describes users at once, rather than distinct people accumulated over the whole 48-hour period.

The page also lists “Top games by current player count,” with separate “Current Players” and “Peak Today” columns. Those are game-level figures, not the platform-wide total. Valve’s labels distinguish both the scope (all Steam versus an individual game) and the time reference (current versus a peak).

How platform and game counts differ

Figure Scope Time label What it represents
Concurrent Steam Users Steam platform-wide Current and peak for the most recent 48 hours A platform-wide concurrent snapshot and the highest value shown for that window; Valve does not publish the complete counting method on the stats page.
Current Players One game Current The listed game’s current-player figure on the public stats page.
Peak Today One game Today The listed game’s peak-player figure for today.
GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers Web API One app Currently active Valve says it returns players currently active in the specified app on Steam, but excludes players playing while not connected to Steam.

Because the scope and time labels differ, a platform-wide 48-hour peak is not directly interchangeable with a game’s current count or its peak today.

What Valve documents about game-player APIs

Steamworks Web API

Valve describes ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers as returning the total number of players currently active in a specified app on Steam. Its documentation explicitly says it “will not return players that are playing while not connected to Steam.” This caveat applies to that Web API endpoint; it should not be silently applied to every Steam count.

Steamworks client API

Valve’s ISteamUserStats::GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers client API documentation describes an asynchronous request for the total number of players currently playing the current game, “Both online and in offline mode.” That wording belongs to the client API. The client API, the Web API, and the platform-wide public display have different contexts, and Valve’s documentation does not establish that their results are interchangeable.

What the number does not tell you

  • It is not a unique-player total for the period. A concurrent snapshot or peak does not say how many distinct people used Steam at any point during the window.
  • It is not a complete description of counting rules. The cited public page and API references do not specify the platform-wide counter’s sampling cadence, all included client or session states, treatment of multiple devices or sessions, or aggregation implementation.
  • A peak is not the live count. The peak is the highest value for the labeled period; it should not be presented as the number currently online.
  • The Web API caveat is endpoint-specific. The documented exclusion of players not connected to Steam is stated for the per-app Web API, not as a universal rule for the public platform-wide number.

How to quote a Steam count accurately

Keep the source’s scope and time label attached to any number. For example, the Steam stats page snapshot updated October 12, 2026 showed 26,273,321 current concurrent Steam users and a 43,501,449 peak for the most recent 48 hours. Those are dated live-display values, not a current benchmark or an annual statistic.

For a game, identify whether you are quoting “Current Players,” “Peak Today,” or a particular API result. If citing the Web API, note its connected-to-Steam limitation. Valve has not specified the public platform counter’s complete methodology in these sources, so avoid claims about exact refresh intervals or other undocumented inclusion rules.
