In Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the safest path to a high mission rank is to prevent detection, finish objectives quickly, and avoid retries and unnecessary kills. Reflex Shot can rescue one brief sighting, but it is a recovery tool rather than a substitute for staying hidden. Because the supplied topic does not name a game, this guide uses those two Metal Gear Solid V games—the titles whose stealth and ranking systems match the described mechanics.
Which Metal Gear Solid V games use this ranking loop?
Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain share the basic stealth language—enemy detection, alerts, cover, takedowns, and mission grades—but their missions and scoring contexts differ. Ground Zeroes is built around compact, replayable operations where an alert, kill, or retry can immediately damage the result. The Phantom Pain applies the same stealth discipline to larger missions and puts particular weight on completing objectives efficiently; stealth and speed together are the dominant advantages for top grades.
The games do not present one universal public formula that lets you calculate a rank before the results screen. Treat the grade as the outcome of several competing behaviors: whether enemies detected you, how long the operation took, which objectives you completed, whether you killed, and how many attempts you needed. The exact weighting can vary by mission, so use the practical rules below instead of chasing an unverified point threshold.

A guard’s sighting starts the risk
A mission becomes vulnerable when an enemy notices Snake. In Ground Zeroes, that sighting can trigger an alert. The game briefly gives you a chance to stop the discovery from spreading, but the safest way to protect the final grade is to prevent the first sighting with cover, darkness, distance, and a route that does not cross an enemy’s view.

Reflex Shot is a short response window
When Reflex Shot activates, time slows for a moment after a guard spots you. Disable or kill that specific enemy before the window closes and the detection can be prevented from propagating into a wider alert; that prevented detection also does not count against the end-of-mission ranking in Ground Zeroes. Missing the window allows the alert to develop, leaving you with a much more expensive recovery.
Alert is more than a single red indicator
Once an alert spreads, enemies can remain highly vigilant for a substantial period. That prolonged state makes movement, rescues, and objective work harder and raises the chance of another sighting. Breaking contact and waiting for the search to end may keep you alive, but it consumes time that a high-speed run cannot easily recover. For ranking purposes, an alert is therefore both a detection problem and a time problem.
How stealth, speed, and penalties affect a mission rank
Use this table as a decision guide. It describes the direction of each factor supported by the games’ documented stealth loop, not a secret numerical formula.

|---|---|---|---|
| Undetected movement | Protects the result; avoiding detection is preferable to relying on recovery. | One of the primary advantages for a high grade. | Plan a route that prevents the first sighting. |
| Reflex Shot | Can stop one detection from becoming a full alert if the spotted enemy is dealt with in time. | Useful as an emergency response, but repeated reliance works against a clean stealth approach. | Treat it as insurance, not a normal route step. |
| Mission speed | Running and gunning may finish an objective, but the associated alerts and kills make that approach poor for high rankings. | Quick objective completion is a major ranking advantage. | Remove detours and hesitation after your route is safe. |
| Kills | Can hurt the score, especially when combined with alerts and retries. | Nonviolent takedowns can improve the GMP payout after a mission. | Use lethal force only when it solves a real mission problem. |
| Retries | Reduce the final result. | Replay is expected for improvement, but an individual attempt should avoid unnecessary restarts. | Restart deliberately rather than reflexively. |
| Optional objectives | Provide additional reasons to replay and refine a route. | Can be combined with S-rank attempts and equipment experimentation. | Learn the core route first, then add optional tasks without losing control of time. |
There is no evidence here for a fixed number of points per alert, kill, or minute. If a mission’s result surprises you, compare the complete run—detection history, completion time, objectives, takedowns, and retries—instead of assuming one event alone determined the grade.
Why staying hidden beats recovering from detection
Stealth has a compounding benefit. A hidden route preserves your time, keeps enemy behavior predictable, and avoids the long high-alert period that follows a failed Reflex Shot. It also leaves more freedom to complete optional objectives. By contrast, a visible mistake can force a detour, a fight, a reload, or a slower search phase; each consequence creates another opportunity to be seen.

That does not mean you must move slowly. The high-rank pattern is controlled speed: identify the route, pass through cover without pausing, complete the objective, and leave before patrols converge. A cautious run that takes far longer than necessary can still need refinement in The Phantom Pain, where speed is explicitly part of the ranking advantage.
How to use Reflex Shot correctly
1. Recognize the trigger
The slowdown means a guard has spotted you. Do not interpret it as permission to continue in the open; it is a warning that your route has already failed.
2. Remove the specific threat
During the brief window, disable or kill the enemy who made the discovery. A successful intervention can prevent the alert from propagating and, in Ground Zeroes, keep that detection out of the final ranking calculation.
3. Break line of sight immediately afterward
Whether you used a nonlethal or lethal response, move back into cover and reassess nearby patrols. The original guard is not the only risk; another enemy can still notice you if you remain exposed.
4. Decide whether the attempt remains viable
If Reflex Shot saved the situation and the objective is close, continue. If the response caused additional exposure, consumed too much time, or forced a chain of engagements, restarting may produce a better ranking attempt—provided you are not restarting after every minor mistake.
A preparation-to-extraction route for high grades
- Mark the environment first. Identify guards, entrances, cover, darkness, and the safest exit before committing to movement. Knowing where the first sighting could occur is more valuable than improvising after it happens.
- Choose a route with a detection margin. Prefer paths that let you pause behind cover or change direction if a patrol shifts. A route that works only when every guard follows an exact pattern is fragile.
- Set a time target for the objective. The goal is not reckless speed; it is eliminating unnecessary travel and waiting. Once the route is repeatable, shorten transitions between infiltration, objective interaction, and extraction.
- Select takedowns deliberately. Nonlethal options preserve the stealth plan and can improve GMP results in The Phantom Pain. A lethal takedown may be justified if leaving an enemy active would cause certain detection, but do not treat kills as a free solution.
- Keep Reflex Shot as an emergency reserve. If it activates, solve the immediate sighting and return to cover. Do not build a route that requires several Reflex activations.
- Finish required objectives before optional risks. Learn the mission’s essential path first. Add collectibles or side objectives only after you can reach and leave the main target without an alert.
- Extract without a victory-lap detour. The operation is not safe until extraction is complete. A clean objective followed by a needless final encounter can erase the advantages of the earlier route.
Lethal versus nonlethal approaches
Nonlethal takedowns
Nonviolent incapacitation supports the game’s stealth logic: fewer permanent casualties, less noise from a firefight, and more flexibility when you revisit the area. In The Phantom Pain, the available tips specifically associate avoiding Reflex and using nonviolent takedowns with a higher GMP payout after a mission. That payout is separate from the visible rank, but it rewards the same disciplined behavior.

Lethal force
Lethal action can solve an immediate threat, yet Ground Zeroes treats kills as a score liability alongside alerts and retries. If you kill simply because a guard is inconvenient, you trade a short-term convenience for a weaker ranking attempt. Reserve lethal force for situations where the alternative would cause a larger, unavoidable failure and understand that it may still reduce the result.
Running and gunning
An aggressive run can complete an objective, but it usually combines the very factors high rankings dislike: visible detection, extended alerts, kills, and repeated attempts after the plan collapses. It is a viable way to learn a mission’s layout, not an efficient strategy for an S-rank target.
How to recover after an alert
If Reflex Shot is active
Use the window on the guard who saw you, then get behind cover. Do not fire at a different target merely because it is closer; the immediate goal is to prevent propagation.
If the alert has already spread
Stop advancing toward the objective. Break sight lines, relocate to a position with cover, and let the search phase subside before moving again. Continuing forward while enemies are highly alert often creates a second detection and a longer delay.

If the route is no longer competitive
Finish the attempt if you still need information about patrol timing or objective placement. For an S-rank run, restart only after identifying the specific route change that will prevent the alert next time. A restart without a diagnosis repeats the same failure and adds another retry cost.
When speed should outrank caution—and when it should not
Use a simple decision rule: choose the fastest route that remains reliably undetected. If a shortcut exposes you to a guard and depends on Reflex Shot, it is not truly faster once the likely alert and recovery time are included. If a safe route adds only a small amount of travel and has forgiving cover, it is usually the better ranking route.
After several clean repetitions, look for time savings that do not increase detection risk: reduce backtracking, approach objectives from the side with fewer patrols, carry equipment that supports the route, and stop waiting for a patrol that your new cover position already bypasses. In The Phantom Pain, these incremental reductions matter because stealth alone is not enough if completion becomes excessively slow.

Both games are designed around repeatable missions. A first attempt teaches the map and objective sequence; later attempts remove alerts, shorten traversal, complete optional objectives, and test different equipment. Guides for the games emphasize replayable missions, collectibles, optional tasks, and S-rank-focused routes for exactly this reason.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Learning run: complete the mission and note every guard, detour, and extraction hazard.
- Stealth run: repeat the mission with the same equipment while eliminating the first detection point.
- Efficiency run: keep the clean route and reduce idle movement and unnecessary waiting.
- Objective run: add optional tasks one at a time, checking whether each addition creates a new detection or time problem.
- S-rank run: use the shortest repeatable route, avoid alerts and needless kills, and accept only mistakes that do not compromise the overall attempt.
Changing equipment between attempts is useful when the change solves a demonstrated problem—for example, a tool that removes a long exposed crossing. Switching gear without understanding the route can make comparisons impossible, so alter one major variable at a time.

Common ranking questions and fixes
“I used Reflex Shot and still received a poor grade. Why?”
Reflex Shot can prevent one detection from becoming a full alert when you handle the spotted enemy in time; it does not erase every cost associated with the rest of the mission. Check whether another guard saw you, whether the alert propagated before the response, how long the mission took, whether you killed, and whether you retried.
“Can I get a high rank while killing enemies?”
A lethal run is possible to complete, but kills are a documented disadvantage in Ground Zeroes, and nonlethal takedowns are tied to better GMP outcomes in The Phantom Pain. If rank is the priority, use nonlethal control whenever it does not create greater detection risk.
“Should I restart after every alert?”
No. Use the first alert to learn what failed and whether the remaining route is still useful. Restart when the attempt can no longer meet your time-and-stealth target or when you have a concrete route correction; otherwise, finish and collect information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Is the fastest possible route always best?”
No. A route that is technically shorter but regularly triggers Reflex Shot or a full alert will usually lose more time than a slightly longer hidden route. Optimize for fast, repeatable completion rather than a risky best case.
“What is the most reliable path to S-rank?”
Build a repeatable route that prevents the first sighting, complete the required objective quickly, avoid unnecessary kills and retries, and replay until optional objectives and extraction no longer introduce surprises. The exact S-rank threshold is mission-specific and is not established by a single public formula here, so judge progress by cleaner, faster, more controlled attempts.
A compact pre-mission checklist
- Have you marked the guards and identified the first detection point?
- Does the route provide cover if a patrol changes position?
- Can you complete the objective without depending on Reflex Shot?
- Are your takedowns consistent with a nonlethal, low-alert plan?
- Have you removed unnecessary travel and waiting?
- Will optional objectives fit without compromising extraction?
- If the attempt fails, do you know which route change you will test next?
Bottom line for high mission ranks
Protect the first minute of the operation: stay unseen, move with purpose, and use cover that gives you a fallback. Reflex Shot can keep one sighting from becoming a recorded detection in Ground Zeroes, but repeated reliance invites the alerts and delays that lower results. For both games, the dependable S-rank loop is a clean route, fast objective completion, restrained use of force, few retries, and deliberate replay until every vulnerable transition is solved.
