Starship’s heat shield is a tiled thermal-protection system designed to keep the vehicle’s structure within survivable temperatures as it reenters Earth’s atmosphere. SpaceX has publicly described flights with deliberately removed tiles and a Flight 13 reentry that gathered heat-shield data. Those reports show an active test and redesign program, not a complete public specification: the current tile material, thickness, attachment details and tile-by-tile inspection results have not been disclosed in the official sources discussed here.
Why atmospheric reentry is so hot
A spacecraft returning to Earth does not simply fall through cool air. At hypersonic speed, the vehicle compresses the gas in front of it. That compressed gas becomes extremely hot and transfers energy toward the vehicle’s surface. NASA Ames Research Center explains that entry heating is caused by the compression of gas and air particles against the spacecraft.
NASA’s general entry-systems overview, last updated March 4, 2025, says spacecraft entering Earth’s atmosphere can face temperatures of up to 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That is a general Earth-entry figure, not a temperature measured on a Starship tile. Actual heating varies with speed, altitude, vehicle shape, angle of attack, atmospheric density and the duration of the high-heating portion of the trajectory.

A vehicle’s outer surface must tolerate the hot flow, while the frame, tanks, avionics, wiring and payload area behind that surface must remain below their allowable temperatures. A reusable spacecraft also has to survive the event with a system that can be inspected, repaired and flown again.

What a heat shield does
A thermal-protection system slows the transfer of reentry energy into the vehicle. NASA describes heat-shield design as a combination of material, shape, thickness and coverage choices matched to a particular mission. There is no universal shield that works for every spacecraft or every destination.
Surface protection
The exposed surface takes the first contact with the hot boundary layer. Its shape influences how the airflow is compressed and where heating concentrates. Edges, control surfaces, seams and transitions can experience different conditions from broad, relatively smooth areas.
Insulation and heat flow
Behind the surface, the protection system limits conduction into the underlying structure. A tile can act as a low-conductivity barrier, keeping the external heat pulse from rapidly reaching the vehicle’s skin. The required performance depends on how much heat arrives, how long it remains, and how much temperature the structure can tolerate.

Coverage and interfaces
Protection has to cover the portions of the vehicle exposed to the entry flow while accommodating doors, flaps, joints, sensors and structural boundaries. Interfaces matter because gaps, steps or damaged edges can create local hot spots even when the surrounding surface is intact. The tile is therefore one element in a vehicle-level system rather than an isolated piece of ceramic.
How Starship’s tiled system fits into that picture
SpaceX publicly describes Starship as using a tiled heat-shield system and has reported redesign and testing work on the thermal-protection system. The company’s reusability update also says multiple Starship vehicles survived reentry after experiments in which tiles were removed to mimic heat-shield failures.

A removed tile creates a controlled area where the underlying layers and structure face more of the reentry environment than they would under normal coverage. Studying that condition can help engineers understand how heat spreads, how neighboring tiles behave and how much design margin exists around a local defect. SpaceX has not published a universal “safe missing-tile count,” a failure temperature or a damage threshold in the official material described here.
The public record supports a narrower conclusion: SpaceX has intentionally used missing-tile conditions as flight experiments and has used the resulting experience to inform redesign and testing. It does not establish that every future mission can tolerate arbitrary tile loss, nor does it provide a complete operating rule for deciding when a vehicle is safe to recover.
What Flight 13 was intended to demonstrate
SpaceX’s Starship’s Thirteenth Flight Test mission page says the ship re-entered Earth’s atmosphere and gathered heat-shield performance data before performing a dynamic banking maneuver intended to mimic the trajectory that future missions returning to Starbase will fly. The page’s wording is important because it describes a data-gathering objective, not a published temperature trace or a quantified pass/fail result.

That kind of flight provides information that cannot be obtained from a simple static inspection. Sensors and post-flight evidence can be compared with predictions, while the vehicle’s changing attitude exposes the shield to different aerodynamic conditions. The mission statement does not disclose all measurements, the condition of each tile afterward or whether routine, repeatable recovery has been demonstrated.

Why individual tiles matter
They limit local heat exposure
A tiled surface divides protection into many panels rather than one monolithic piece. If one panel is absent or damaged, the exposed area can become a local path for heat into the layers beneath it. The severity depends on the size and location of the gap, the surrounding geometry and the duration of the heating event.
They create inspectable maintenance units
For a reusable vehicle, dividing the shield into replaceable units can make it possible to inspect individual locations and address damage without rebuilding the entire outer surface. That is an engineering rationale for a tiled architecture, not a claim about Starship’s current repair procedure; SpaceX has not publicly supplied a complete tile-replacement workflow in the sources covered here.
They make failure testing more informative
Deliberately removing a tile gives engineers a known defect to compare against an intact configuration. Repeated tests can examine how predictions match flight behavior and whether design changes improve robustness. Because SpaceX has not published the test matrix or acceptance criteria, readers should not infer a particular allowable defect size from the existence of these experiments.
What happens if a tile is missing?
The immediate effect is reduced coverage over a defined patch of the vehicle. During entry, the hot flow can heat the exposed substrate more directly, and the surrounding tile edges may experience conditions different from those in a fully tiled field. If heat reaches a temperature-sensitive structural or system component, the consequences could extend beyond the missing panel itself.
Engineers evaluate such events as part of the whole vehicle. They consider the entry trajectory, local heating, neighboring protection, structural temperature limits and the condition of systems behind the shield. A missing tile is not automatically proof of vehicle loss, but neither is it automatically benign. The public SpaceX descriptions confirm that missing-tile scenarios have been studied; they do not publish a simple rule that translates one missing tile into a guaranteed outcome.

Heat-shield materials: useful context, not a Starship specification
NASA Ames uses several materials to explain entry-system options. These examples show why material selection is mission-specific and why one spacecraft’s shield should not be assumed to match another’s.

Reusable tiles and ablative shields solve the same broad problem in different ways. An ablative shield consumes material to carry heat away as it chars, decomposes or otherwise erodes. A reusable surface instead aims to limit heat transfer while retaining its protective capability for another flight. The best choice depends on entry speed, heat load, vehicle geometry, mission cadence, mass, inspection requirements and acceptable refurbishment work.

Before a flight, thermal models predict surface heating and temperatures through the protection system. A reentry test then provides evidence about how those predictions perform under real atmospheric conditions. The useful comparison is not a single headline number; it is the relationship among the trajectory, vehicle attitude, measured response and post-flight condition.
Trajectory and attitude
Speed, altitude and orientation change the airflow and heating history. A dynamic banking maneuver, such as the one described for Flight 13, can expose the vehicle to changing conditions while also testing control of the reentry path.
Local versus vehicle-wide behavior
Engineers need to know whether a local defect remains localized or whether it causes damage to adjacent protection and structure. Missing-tile experiments are valuable because they introduce a defined disturbance into that analysis.

Model improvement
Flight data can reveal where assumptions were conservative, where they were too optimistic and where the design needs modification. SpaceX’s public reusability update connects tile-removal experiments with thermal-protection redesign and testing, but it does not publish the detailed equations, sensor readings or redesign dimensions.
What is publicly known—and what is not
The following points can be stated from the official descriptions:
- Starship uses a tiled thermal-protection concept for atmospheric reentry.
- SpaceX has reported flights involving deliberately removed tiles to mimic heat-shield failures.
- SpaceX has described redesign and testing of the thermal-protection system.
- Flight 13’s stated objectives included gathering heat-shield performance data during reentry and performing a dynamic banking maneuver related to a future return trajectory.
- NASA’s up-to-7,000-degree-Fahrenheit figure is a general Earth-entry explanation, not a Starship tile measurement.

Why the forward heat-shield interstage update matters only as a scope note
A U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration environmental re-evaluation notice included updates to the forward heat-shield interstage among the Starship/Super Heavy program changes considered at Boca Chica. That notice establishes that the area was part of the program update under review. It does not describe the tile material, attachment design or thermal performance, so it should not be used as a technical specification.
How to read future Starship heat-shield announcements
When SpaceX or a regulator publishes another update, check five questions before drawing a conclusion:
- Is the statement about a goal or a measured result? “Gathered critical data” identifies an objective and accomplishment of data collection; it is not a numerical performance result.
- Is the number Starship-specific? General entry temperatures, speeds or material examples from NASA may describe other spacecraft.
- Does the statement identify the test condition? A result from an intact shield, a deliberately removed tile or a particular trajectory cannot automatically be generalized to every flight.
- Does it describe the full vehicle? Tile behavior is only one part of the thermal-protection system, structure, guidance and recovery sequence.
- Is the design detail actually published? If material, thickness or attachment is not stated by a direct technical source, treat it as undisclosed rather than filling the gap with speculation.
The practical answer to “How does Starship survive reentry?”
Starship survives reentry by combining a vehicle shape and flight path that manage aerodynamic heating with a thermal-protection system intended to keep heat from reaching vulnerable structure and systems. Its tiles provide the exposed coverage, while the rest of the vehicle supplies the geometry, structure, control and internal thermal margins needed for the complete entry event.
SpaceX’s public tile-removal experiments show that robustness to localized protection loss is an explicit design question. Flight 13’s mission description shows that the company is collecting reentry data while testing a banking profile associated with future returns. Those facts support continued development and learning, but they do not reveal a complete tile specification or prove that every missing-tile scenario is safe.
