Starlink is a two-way satellite internet service. An outdoor Starlink terminal communicates with satellites, sends the connection through the supplied cable to a power supply and Wi-Fi router, and then connects your phones, computers, televisions, and other devices over Wi-Fi. For a reliable installation, you need the correct kit for your market, an unobstructed view of the sky, a suitable power outlet, and a safe place to install the terminal. Starlink’s current specifications describe typical land performance of 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload, and 25–60 ms latency, but those figures are not guarantees.
What Starlink satellite internet is
Starlink describes its service as “two-way satellite-based internet.” In practical terms, your outdoor user terminal both receives data from and sends data to the Starlink satellite network. The terminal connects by cable to indoor power equipment and a Starlink router. The router creates the local Wi-Fi network used by household devices.
This consumer-level model explains the equipment path without assuming details that Starlink’s installation material does not establish, such as a particular satellite orbit, gateway route, or inter-satellite path for every session. The important installation fact is that the terminal must maintain a sufficiently clear view of the sky while satellites move overhead.

Equipment you need
The exact contents depend on the terminal generation and the country where you order. Starlink’s Standard 4 X setup guide lists the following items for that specific kit:
| Component | Purpose | Included in Standard 4 X guide |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink terminal | Communicates with the satellite network | Included |
| Starlink cable | Connects the terminal to the router and power arrangement | Included |
| Power supply | Provides power to the Starlink equipment | Included |
| AC power cable | Connects the power supply to mains electricity | Included |
| Standard kickstand | Supports the terminal for a suitable temporary or ground-level placement | Included |
| Router 3 | Provides Wi-Fi for local devices | Included |
Do not assume another Starlink kit has the same router, stand, cable, or alignment behavior. Check the box contents and installation guide for the exact model before buying accessories.
When you need a separate mount
The included stand is useful only where it can provide a clear sky view and a stable location. If trees, a roofline, poles, or other objects block the terminal, Starlink’s obstruction guidance recommends relocating it or raising it on an appropriate roof, pole, or wall mount. A mount is therefore conditional rather than an automatic requirement.
Choose an accessory that matches the terminal generation and the mounting surface. A roof, pole, or wall installation can also require weatherproof cable routing, suitable fasteners, safe ladder or roof access, and compliance with local building or electrical rules. If you cannot install it safely, Starlink advises seeking professional assistance. Read the current obstruction guidance at How to fix obstructions.

Where to put the Starlink terminal
Placement is the most important part of a Starlink installation. Use the Starlink app’s obstruction tool before committing to a permanent location. Walk the proposed area and scan the sky as instructed by the app; trees, poles, chimneys, nearby buildings, and roof edges can all interrupt service.
- Start with the highest practical open area, not simply the closest point to your router.
- Use the included kickstand only if the ground-level view is clear and the terminal can remain stable.
- Move the terminal or plan an elevated mount if the app identifies recurring obstructions.
- Leave a sensible route for the supplied cable and avoid sharp bends, crushing, standing water, or trip hazards.
- Keep the indoor power equipment near a suitable outlet and in a dry, ventilated location.
Starlink’s setup material treats a clear sky view as a service requirement, not an optional optimization. A location that appears acceptable at one angle can still produce interruptions when an obstruction enters the terminal’s view.
How to install Starlink step by step
- Install the Starlink app. Use the current app to follow installation, inspect obstructions, check alignment, and view connection status.
- Identify every item in the box. For the Standard 4 X kit, confirm the terminal, Starlink cable, power supply, AC cable, kickstand, and Router 3 are present. Use the guide for your exact generation if the contents differ.
- Choose the initial site. Run the app’s obstruction tool and select the clearest practical view of the sky. If no ground-level area is clear, decide whether an elevated mount is needed before routing cable.
- Place the terminal. Set it on the kickstand or the compatible mount, following the model-specific installation instructions. Keep the terminal stable and the cable protected.
- Connect the terminal to the router. On the Standard 4 X arrangement, plug the Starlink cable into the router port marked with the antenna symbol.
- Connect power. Attach the power supply and AC power cable as shown in the kit guide, then connect the AC cable to a suitable outlet.
- Allow startup. Starlink says connection can take a few minutes. The equipment may also install software updates after initial setup, so do not disconnect it simply because service is not immediate.
- Complete alignment if prompted. Use the app’s alignment tool when it requests rotation or repositioning. Do not apply one alignment rule to every generation.
- Join the Wi-Fi network. On a phone or computer, select the STARLINK Wi-Fi network, then follow the app or setup screen to create your own network name (SSID) and password.
- Verify the connection. Use the app to check status and obstruction information. Once service is stable, secure the terminal and finish any permanent cable routing.
The official setup guide with diagrams and connection order is the Standard 4 X Setup Guide. Hardware generations can use different physical layouts, so follow the guide supplied with your terminal rather than forcing a connector or mount to fit.

- Standard and Mini: use the app’s alignment tool when instructed.
- Standard Actuated and Performance (Gen 1): automatically level themselves while searching for satellites.
The app may ask for rotation on a Standard or Mini installation. Complete that prompt instead of assuming the terminal will self-level. Conversely, do not manually apply a universal “point it south” or “let it align itself” rule to hardware for which the current guide gives different directions. See How do I set up Starlink? for the current model-specific process.
What speeds and latency to expect
Starlink’s specifications page reports these typical ranges for users on land:
| Measure | Starlink-published typical range | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Download speed | 25–220 Mbps | Actual results vary by location, time of day, plan priority, and network usage |
| Upload speed | 5–20 Mbps | Typical range, not a household-specific guarantee |
| Latency on land | 25–60 ms | Latency can exceed 100 ms in some remote locations |
These are vendor-published expectations, not independent test results. The Starlink Specifications page warns that speeds can be lower during periods of high usage and that performance depends on location, time of day, service-plan priority, and overall network demand.
For a particular home, the practical questions are whether service is available at the address, which plan terms apply there, whether the intended use is fixed or mobile, and how much priority the plan provides. Treat a headline speed as a range for planning rather than a promise for streaming, gaming, video calls, or downloads at every hour.

Choosing a plan and checking availability
Starlink availability, plan names, policies, and prices vary by country and can change. Verify the service address on Starlink’s current local ordering and plan pages before purchasing a kit. The specifications page can describe general performance, but it does not replace a market-specific availability check.
- Confirm that the exact service address is eligible.
- Check whether the plan is intended for fixed residential use or another use case.
- Review any stated priority or network-management terms because they affect expected performance.
- Confirm that the terminal generation and accessories offered in your market match your intended installation.
- Recheck recurring charges and equipment terms at checkout; a generic article cannot provide a current local price.
Troubleshooting common installation problems
The connection keeps dropping
Open the app’s obstruction information first. Trees, poles, roofs, and other objects in the terminal’s view are a primary cause of interruptions. Relocate the terminal to a clearer site or use a compatible elevated mount. A temporary improvement from moving the terminal is useful evidence that the original position was obstructed.
The app says the terminal needs alignment
Follow the alignment tool for the specific model. Standard and Mini installations can require user-guided rotation, while Standard Actuated and Performance (Gen 1) units automatically level during satellite search. Recheck the model name in the app or kit documentation before changing the physical position.
There is no service immediately after powering on
Confirm that the Starlink cable is fully seated at the terminal and at the router’s antenna-marked port, and verify that the power supply and AC cable are connected as shown in the guide. Allow a few minutes for startup and possible software updates. If the app still reports a fault, use its status and troubleshooting information before relocating hardware.

Speeds are lower than expected
Compare the result with the conditions in which it was measured. Starlink states that high usage, time of day, location, and plan priority can reduce performance. Test at different times, check the app for obstructions, and avoid treating one speed test as a permanent capability limit or guarantee.
The proposed mount is unsafe or difficult to reach
Do not improvise a roof or pole installation when you cannot maintain a secure attachment or safe cable route. Starlink’s obstruction guidance points users who cannot safely resolve placement issues toward professional assistance.
When professional installation makes sense
Professional help is especially sensible when the only clear sky view is on a roof, tower, or tall pole; when cable routing requires exterior penetrations; when local rules affect mounting; or when you cannot safely work at height. The installer should verify compatibility with the exact terminal generation, create a stable mount, protect the cable, and leave the power equipment accessible for service.

Bottom line
A working Starlink installation is a complete path: an unobstructed outdoor terminal, the correct cable and power equipment, a compatible router, and a properly configured Wi-Fi network. Start with the app’s obstruction scan, follow the model-specific alignment instructions, and judge speed expectations against Starlink’s published ranges and local plan conditions rather than a guaranteed number.
