Starlink is a two-way satellite internet service: a user terminal sends and receives data from low-Earth-orbit satellites moving across the sky, while a Wi-Fi router connects your devices. The terminal can change satellites as they move or as a link weakens, but reliable service still depends on two separate conditions: Starlink must offer an eligible plan at your address, and the terminal must have a sufficiently clear view of the sky.
Before ordering, check your exact service address on Starlink’s live availability page and use the Starlink app’s obstruction preview at the proposed installation point. A country shown on a coverage map does not guarantee that every address, plan or hardware configuration can be activated.
What “coverage” means for Starlink
People use coverage to describe two different questions. Separating them prevents the most common buying mistake—assuming that a satellite passing overhead automatically means service is available at a property.
| Coverage question | What determines the answer | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Can Starlink be activated at this address? | Network capacity, regulatory approval, local demand, account details and the plans currently offered in that market. | Enter the complete service address in Starlink’s availability and plan-selection flow. See Starlink’s eligibility guidance. |
| Can the installed terminal maintain a link? | Whether trees, buildings, poles, roof edges or other objects block the parts of the sky used by available satellites. | Run the Starlink app’s “Check for Obstructions” tool at the exact mounting location. Starlink explains the resulting map in its obstruction-map guide. |
Both tests are necessary. An address can be inside Starlink’s geographic service footprint but have no eligible plan at that moment. Conversely, an eligible address can experience interruptions if the terminal’s view is blocked.

How the Starlink system works
The hardware in a normal kit
Starlink describes its service as a terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply and mount. The terminal is the outdoor radio that communicates with satellites; the router distributes the connection indoors. The mount positions the terminal, while the power supply runs both network equipment and the terminal’s tracking and communication electronics. Exact hardware shape and included accessories can vary by kit generation and region, so use the setup instructions supplied for your model.
Two-way communication with moving satellites
Unlike a one-way satellite broadcast, Starlink’s terminal both transmits and receives data. It communicates with satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which move across the sky rather than remaining above one fixed point. As one satellite’s geometry or signal quality becomes less useful, the network can move the session to another satellite.
Starlink’s July 30, 2025 beam-switching update says a US user terminal has “10s of satellites in view.” That is Starlink’s description of its US network at that time, not a guaranteed number for every customer or location. Having multiple possible paths can improve resilience, but it does not make an obstructed installation immune to dropouts: if all usable paths are blocked, the terminal cannot maintain the link.

Proactive and reactive switching
Starlink says fixed installations can switch proactively as satellites move, preparing a handoff before the current path degrades. Mobile terminals, or terminals facing an unexpected change, may switch reactively after conditions change. Switching is a network function, not a substitute for an unobstructed antenna position. Moving equipment also has plan and hardware rules that vary by service and location.
Address eligibility and network capacity
Starlink does not offer an identical menu everywhere. Its eligibility support page says the plans shown for an account are filtered by service address, account and hardware, with availability affected by network capacity, regulatory approval and local demand. A map coloring or a country appearing on a coverage page therefore cannot establish that a particular plan can be activated at every address in that country.

Why a clear sky view matters
What can block the link
Starlink’s setup instruction is direct: “Your Starlink needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead.” Trees, buildings, utility poles, roof edges and nearby structures can mask portions of the sky. A terminal may work during one part of a satellite pass and lose the link when the available path moves behind an obstruction.
Obstructions are especially troublesome when several satellites are visible but all usable paths cross the same blocked area. The result can be brief interruptions rather than a permanent failure. Starlink’s obstruction-map explanation notes that the map represents what the terminal detects while communicating and that interruptions may occur when all available satellites are obstructed.
Use the app before choosing a mounting point
- Install and open the Starlink app while standing where the terminal could be placed.
- Select the setup flow and choose “Check for Obstructions.” Follow the on-screen camera instructions so the app can evaluate the sky above the proposed position.
- Scan slowly in every direction and include the actual height of the planned mount. A ground-level test cannot reliably represent a roof or pole installation.
- Review the obstruction visualization and identify the direction and height of any blocked sector.
- Repeat the scan at alternative locations before drilling, purchasing a mount or running cable.
The app is a planning aid, not a promise of uninterrupted service. Trees grow, construction changes rooflines and temporary objects can enter the path. Recheck the view if the surroundings change or if the terminal reports new obstructions.
When elevation helps
If no ground-level position has a sufficiently open sky, Starlink’s setup guide suggests considering an elevated roof, pole or wall position. Elevation can clear a nearby fence, tree line or roof edge, but it cannot fix a site whose horizon is blocked in every practical direction. Any mount must also be appropriate for the terminal generation, surface and local weather exposure. Starlink’s Standard (Circular) Starlink Kit setup guide provides the model-specific installation sequence; do not assume that a mount for one terminal generation fits another.

Performance: speeds, latency and congestion
Starlink’s official specifications list typical land-service download speeds of 25–220 Mbps, upload speeds of 5–20 Mbps and latency of 25–60 ms. The same specifications caution that latency can exceed 100 ms in some remote locations. These are company-published ranges, not a guarantee for a particular address, terminal, plan or time of day; consult the live Starlink Specifications page because figures and qualifications can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Metric | Starlink-published typical figure for land service | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Download | 25–220 Mbps | Actual performance can be lower during high usage and varies by location, time of day and service-plan priority. |
| Upload | 5–20 Mbps | The range is typical, not a minimum or a promise for every plan. |
| Latency | 25–60 ms | Starlink says some remote locations can exceed 100 ms. |
Congestion is a coverage-adjacent issue: a terminal may have a clear sky and remain connected while speeds fall during busy periods. Plan priority can affect the experience, so compare the priority and data terms shown for your address rather than using a single global speed claim. Starlink also states that uninterrupted service is not guaranteed.
Weather and changing conditions
Starlink markets its equipment as weather resilient. That describes the design intent, not a site-specific outage rate. The available specifications and support material do not establish an independent rain-fade percentage or guarantee performance in severe storms, snow or high winds. Expect conditions to vary by terminal placement, local weather and network state, and avoid presenting any weather figure as a universal threshold.
Weather is only one changing condition. Foliage can become denser, a new building can enter the field of view, and a mobile terminal can encounter a different obstruction pattern after relocation. Fixed and mobile users should periodically check the terminal’s obstruction status and the rules attached to their plan.
How large the constellation is—and why that number is not your coverage guarantee
Starlink and SpaceX reported more than 11,000 Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit on October 6, 2026. The same update said the first 26 V3 satellites were deployed at the end of September 2026. These are company-reported, time-sensitive constellation counts, not a fixed total and not a promise that a given address can see a particular number of satellites. The current update history is available at Starlink Updates.

A larger constellation can provide more possible paths, but local eligibility, regulatory authorization, congestion and the terminal’s physical view still determine the service you receive.
Fixed versus mobile use
For a fixed home or office installation, choose a permanent position with the clearest practical sky view and secure the cable and mount for local conditions. The network can plan satellite handoffs as the satellites move overhead.
For mobile use, the terminal may encounter new obstructions and unexpected link changes. Starlink describes reactive switching for mobile terminals, but plan permissions, hardware requirements and allowed service locations are account-specific. Check the mobile terms displayed at your service address before transporting equipment or operating it in motion; do not infer permission from the fact that the hardware can be moved.
A practical pre-order and installation checklist
- Address: Enter the exact service address and record the plans and hardware actually offered.
- Plan purpose: Decide whether the connection will stay at one address or be used while traveling, then verify the corresponding terms.
- Sky view: Run “Check for Obstructions” at each realistic mounting location, including the intended height.
- Mount: Select a roof, pole, wall or ground position only after confirming that it clears the blocked sectors and that the mount suits the terminal generation.
- Cable route: Plan a safe route from the terminal to the router and power supply without creating trip, water-ingress or sharp-bend hazards.
- Expectations: Treat published speed and latency ranges as estimates that change with location, time, congestion and plan priority.
- Future changes: Recheck obstructions after construction, landscaping or a move, and revisit plan terms when Starlink changes its service offerings.
Troubleshooting coverage problems
The address is unavailable
Re-enter the address exactly, including the correct country or regional format, and review the plans offered after signing into the intended account. Availability can be limited by capacity, local demand or regulation even when nearby addresses appear eligible. Waiting for capacity or checking again later may be the only option; do not activate service at a different address unless the plan explicitly permits that use.

The app reports obstructions or service drops
Use the obstruction map to identify the blocked direction, then move the terminal or raise it above the object if a genuinely clearer position exists. Do not assume that adding a taller mast alone will solve a blocked horizon. If every practical location has the same obstruction, the property may not be suitable for consistent service.

Speeds are lower than expected
First check whether the slowdown occurs during a high-use period. Compare results at different times and review the plan’s priority and data terms. Confirm that the terminal still reports a clear sky view, because intermittent obstruction can look like a speed problem. Published ranges are not minimum guarantees, so a result below the typical range does not by itself prove defective hardware.
Service fails during bad weather
Record the timing and conditions, inspect the terminal and cable for visible problems, and check for newly reported obstructions. Because no independent outage-rate figure is established, avoid diagnosing a precise weather threshold from one event. Persistent failures after conditions clear should be evaluated through Starlink’s current support channels with the terminal’s diagnostic information.
What to compare with another internet option
