Starliner docks with the International Space Station by first matching the station’s orbit, then approaching in controlled stages under automated guidance and crew supervision. During the 2024 Crew Flight Test, the spacecraft docked autonomously at the forward-facing port of the station’s Harmony module. The docking succeeded, but later thruster and helium-system concerns led NASA to return Starliner without its astronauts.
How does Starliner approach and dock with the ISS?
Starliner does not launch directly toward the station and dock in one continuous maneuver. After separating from its Atlas V launch vehicle, it performs an engine burn to enter orbit. It then uses planned thruster firings to raise and refine its orbit, gradually catching up with the International Space Station and arranging its path for a staged approach. NASA’s Crew Flight Test mission overview described an approximately 24-hour journey from orbital insertion to the station.
The distinction matters: the ISS is moving in orbit, so Starliner has to reach a compatible position and track before it can close the remaining distance. Rendezvous is the process of shaping the spacecraft’s motion to meet the station; docking is the final, carefully controlled contact between their docking interfaces. A direct “fly up and attach” picture misses most of the work.

What are the main steps in the docking sequence?
1. Separate from the rocket and enter orbit
After launch, Starliner separates from Atlas V and fires its own engines to enter orbit. From that point, the spacecraft carries out its rendezvous maneuvers. NASA’s mission overview describes the trip as taking about 24 hours, not because the station is a fixed destination waiting overhead, but because Starliner must adjust its orbital path in a planned sequence.

2. Raise and refine the orbit
Planned thruster firings first raise Starliner’s orbit and then refine its track. Those maneuvers bring the spacecraft into a position from which it can catch up with the ISS. Rather than aiming at the station’s apparent location and chasing it in a straight line, Starliner changes its orbit so its motion and the station’s motion bring them together.
This phase is also an opportunity to assess the spacecraft’s systems in flight. NASA’s stated Crew Flight Test objectives included checking thruster performance, automated and manual navigation, communications and life-support systems during rendezvous and docking. The approach therefore served as both transportation and a test of how Starliner’s systems performed in the operating environment.
3. Approach under automatic guidance, with the crew monitoring
Starliner uses sensors, flight computers and automatic steering to conduct its planned maneuvers. Automation carries out the approach, but it does not mean the spacecraft operates without human oversight. The astronauts monitor performance and carry out manual steering and navigation checks. Boeing’s account of the June 6, 2024 docking says Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams demonstrated manual control and could take over Starliner’s operations if needed.

That division of responsibility is important to understand. The spacecraft can execute an automated sequence, while the crew watches what it is doing, verifies navigation and retains a manual-control role. NASA also included thruster performance for abort scenarios among the test objectives. In other words, the crew’s work was not simply to observe a successful approach; they were evaluating capabilities and procedures relevant to managing the flight.
4. Wait for clearance outside the keep-out sphere
For the mission profile described in NASA’s Commercial Crew Program press kit, Starliner approached the station but remained outside a 200-meter “keep out sphere” until station flight controllers cleared it to enter. This is a mission-specific operational boundary in the cited description, not a universal rule that should be assumed for every spacecraft, station approach or mission.
The clearance point makes the approach a coordinated operation, not just a sequence controlled from inside Starliner. Flight controllers at the station have a role in allowing the vehicle to proceed. A hold outside the sphere provides a defined point at which the approach is paused until the required clearance is given.

5. Pause near the docking adapter for readiness checks
After the docking process begins, the described profile includes another hold: Starliner pauses 10 meters from a Boeing-built International Docking Adapter for system-readiness checks. Once those checks are complete, it continues toward final approach. The 10-meter distance belongs to this NASA-described mission profile; it should not be treated as a standard distance for all spacecraft or docking systems.
These holds divide a complex approach into stages with decision points. Instead of continuing inward without pause, Starliner stops at specified points so systems can be checked and the next part of the sequence can be authorized. If a check or clearance were not satisfactory, the vehicle would not simply be expected to press on as if nothing had changed; the crew and mission teams have to manage the approach according to the flight’s procedures.
6. Align with Harmony and make contact
On the Crew Flight Test, Starliner docked autonomously to the forward-facing port on the ISS’s Harmony module. NASA describes the spacecraft as catching up to the station, moving ahead of it and aligning with that port. Once the vehicles were positioned for docking, Starliner completed the final approach to the station’s docking interface.

Contact is the endpoint of the rendezvous and alignment sequence, not a casual bump or a vehicle pulling over to a curb. The spacecraft has to arrive at the intended interface after its orbital setup, staged approach, holds and checks. Wilmore marked contact with the words, “It’s nice to be attached to the big city in the sky,” according to Boeing’s account of the docking.
What happens after Starliner docks?
Docking is not the end of the planned Crew Flight Test activities. NASA’s mission overview included opening and closing the hatch, configuring Starliner for its attached stay and transferring emergency equipment into the ISS. Those activities test what happens once the spacecraft is connected and the crew is working across the boundary between Starliner and the station.
The test plan also included a “safe haven” demonstration. In that exercise, the astronauts would close Starliner’s hatch and use the docked spacecraft as a refuge in the event of an emergency on the station. This was a planned demonstration of an emergency-use capability, distinct from the normal process of entering the station and living aboard it.

What did the 2024 Crew Flight Test demonstrate?
NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched aboard Starliner on June 5, 2024, and arrived at the ISS on June 6. It was the first flight of Starliner to the station with astronauts. The docking was part of a flight test intended to gather data for system certification, including the rocket-spacecraft system, in-orbit operations and return capability.
The docking itself succeeded. NASA and Boeing described a combination of onboard sensors, automatic steering and astronaut oversight; Wilmore and Williams also checked manual steering and navigation during the trip and demonstrated manual control. That successful arrival is a meaningful result, but it does not mean the entire flight test established that Starliner was ready for routine crewed service. Docking is one part of a mission, and certification has to account for the broader spacecraft and flight system.
Why did NASA return Starliner without its crew?
NASA’s FAQ on the Crew Flight Test return status says engineers observed thrusters that did not perform as expected and several helium-system leaks. After technical reviews of the propulsion and helium systems and possible return scenarios, NASA decided that Wilmore and Williams should return separately and that Starliner should return uncrewed. The agency said uncertainty remained and it would not accept more risk than necessary for the astronauts.

This decision does not undo the docking, but it changes what the docking result can prove. The spacecraft demonstrated that it could complete its crewed rendezvous and attach to the station; concerns that arose during the mission also required NASA to reassess the return plan. A successful approach and docking are not, on their own, proof that every propulsion-system concern has been resolved or that a spacecraft is certified for regular crewed flights.
What is planned before future crewed Starliner flights?
NASA’s development update describes modifications to address the thruster issues and a planned uncrewed Starliner-1 mission to verify changes and gather qualification data before future crewed missions. NASA attributes the service-module reaction-control thruster performance issues to thrusters operating outside engineering qualification, with thermal conditions and design features contributing. The update describes thermal modifications and a further planned thruster-valve design change.
The update gives a possible December 2026 or January 2027 window for Starliner-1. That is a schedule outlook, not evidence that the mission has launched or completed its validation work; launch timing can change. The stated purpose is to fly without a crew, check the modifications and gather data before NASA proceeds to future crewed operations.
Quick Recap
What should you take away about Starliner docking?
- Starliner reaches the ISS through orbital rendezvous and a staged approach; NASA described the Crew Flight Test trip from orbital insertion as approximately 24 hours.
- The Crew Flight Test target was Harmony’s forward-facing port, and NASA’s described profile included a clearance point outside the 200-meter keep-out sphere and a 10-meter hold near the docking adapter.
- Automation steers the approach, while astronauts monitor the vehicle, check manual navigation and control, and retain responsibilities relevant to manual operation and abort scenarios.
- The June 2024 crewed docking succeeded, but subsequent thruster and helium concerns led NASA to return Starliner uncrewed and the astronauts separately.
- NASA describes an uncrewed Starliner-1 validation flight and further modifications as steps before future crewed missions; the announced window is a plan, not a completed flight.
