Starfield mods are optional additions that change or expand the game. For most players, the supported in-game route is Bethesda’s Creations menu, where entries can add missions, gear, skins, weapons and other content. Before installing one, check its current requirements, platform and game-build notes, and whether it is tagged Achievement Friendly. Bethesda says ordinary Creations disable achievements, and a later tag change does not restore achievements on an older save that already used Creations.
What “mods” mean in Starfield
In Starfield, “mod” is a broad player term rather than a single technical category. Bethesda’s official distribution channel is called Creations. The catalog can contain very different kinds of additions, including new missions, equipment, cosmetic skins, weapons and other optional content. One Creation might make a small visual change; another can add a substantial quest or new gameplay systems. Treat every listing as its own package with its own requirements and save-game implications.
Bethesda announced Creations in the June 9, 2024 Starfield Update 1.12.30 and said players could access them through the game’s in-game menu. The catalog is not static: entries, descriptions, availability and labels can change. A guide written for one release should therefore not be treated as a permanent compatibility list.

Creations are optional content, not a required game component
You do not need to install Creations to play the unmodified game. They are additions layered onto an existing installation. If you only want to download content, Bethesda does not describe the separate Creation Kit as a prerequisite. The Creation Kit is a Steam download intended for people making Starfield content, not a tool every player must install.

How to install a Starfield Creation through the official menu
The exact wording of buttons can change with updates, but Bethesda’s supported player flow begins inside Starfield rather than in an external installer. Use the following process for each item:
- Start Starfield and open the Creations menu. Bethesda’s June 2024 announcement identifies the in-game menu as the place to find Creations.
- Browse or search for the specific entry. Read the item’s current description instead of relying on a video, forum post or an old screenshot. Confirm what the Creation adds and whether the listing names prerequisites.
- Check the platform and game-build information. Availability and compatibility can vary by the particular Creation, your platform and your installed game version. The official material does not provide a universal platform-and-version matrix, so the listing’s current notes are the authority for that item.
- Inspect the achievement label before confirming. Bethesda Support states that Creations disable achievements unless the specific item is tagged Achievement Friendly.
- Install or enable the Creation from its listing. Follow the on-screen confirmation and allow the game to finish applying the content before loading the save on which you intend to use it.
- Load the intended character only after reviewing the warning. If the Creation changes quests, locations or equipment, think of the save as a modified playthrough. Keep an unmodified save available if preserving a clean run matters to you.
These steps describe Bethesda’s in-game channel. They do not establish a universal procedure for third-party PC files, manual file copying or external mod managers. Those methods can have different requirements and are outside the official menu instructions covered here.
Do Starfield Creations disable achievements?
Usually, yes. Bethesda Support’s current guidance says: “Creations will disable achievements in Starfield unless they are tagged as ‘Achievement Friendly.’” The exception is attached to the individual Creation, so do not infer status from the author, category or the fact that another item from the same creator is friendly.

Bethesda’s November 19, 2024 update introduced an achievement-friendly option for certain releases from its Verified Creators program. That update does not make every Creation safe for achievements. It means that some qualifying entries can carry the label; you still have to inspect the current listing for the exact item you plan to use.

Why an old save may not regain achievements
The November 2024 announcement also says: “Achievements will not retroactively unlock on previous game saves with Creations, even if those Creations are now achievement friendly.” In practical terms, installing an item on a save and waiting for its label to change later is not a recovery plan. If achievements are important, verify the tag before installing and use a save that has not already been played with a non-friendly Creation.
A pre-installation decision checklist
Use this checklist before pressing the install button. It separates facts you can verify from risks you must accept.
- Achievement status: Is the exact listing currently marked Achievement Friendly? If not, assume achievements will be disabled for that playthrough.
- Content scope: Does it add a mission, gear, skin, weapon or another system? Knowing the scope helps you decide whether to add it to an established character or start a separate run.
- Requirements: Does the listing name another Creation, a minimum game version or a specific configuration? Install only what the current description says is required.
- Platform: Does the entry explicitly support your platform? Do not transfer assumptions from a PC listing to a console installation, or from one platform’s notes to another.
- Game build: Does your installed Starfield version match the version named by the creator or Bethesda guidance? A game update can change whether an item works as described.
- Save commitment: Are you willing to use optional content on this character, knowing Bethesda describes Creations as used at your own risk?
- Recovery option: Do you have an original or otherwise unmodified save you can return to if the Creation causes a problem?
There is no official source in the material available for this guide that establishes a universal load order, backup recipe, or compatibility table for every platform and game version. Avoid treating a community rule as a Bethesda guarantee.

- Open Starfield’s Creations menu.
- Open your Library and locate the Creation.
- Choose Delete to remove it, or use the available option to Disable it instead.
Disabling is useful when you want to test whether a particular item is involved in a problem without immediately removing its installed data. Deleting removes the entry through the menu. Neither action should be read as a promise that every change already written to a save will be undone. Bethesda’s support page explicitly says Creations are used at your own risk and does not guarantee that removing any particular item repairs every save.
Returning to an original save
Bethesda’s support guidance points to Select Character in the Load menu as a way to return to an original save after disabling Creations. Choose the character and save that existed before the modified playthrough when possible. This is a fallback path, not evidence that all progress made with the Creation can be merged safely into an unmodified file.
What can go wrong, and what the official guidance does—and does not—cover
Achievements are unavailable
The first explanation to check is the item’s achievement label. A non-friendly Creation disables achievements under Bethesda’s stated policy. Removing it later does not create retroactive unlocks on a previous save that used Creations, according to the November 2024 announcement. Return to an earlier clean save if achievement progress is your priority.
The item does not appear or cannot be used
Reopen the item’s current listing and verify platform, game-build and prerequisite notes. Catalog contents and labels are volatile, and the official sources reviewed here do not establish one rule that covers every entry. An item can be unavailable on a particular platform or require another Creation without that being a fault in the base game.

The game behaves differently after installation
Record which Creation you installed and when, then disable it from the Creations Library. Test an earlier save or use Select Character to load an original save. Because Bethesda does not promise universal reversal after removal, avoid overwriting the only copy of a character you care about while troubleshooting.
You are following third-party PC instructions
External files and mod managers are not described by Bethesda’s in-game support steps. Their installation commands, dependency rules and update behavior can differ by tool and game build. Use the specific item’s current documentation and platform notes; do not assume the Creations Library controls files installed by another method.
Creations versus the Creation Kit
These names describe different activities:

Do not install the Creation Kit merely because you want to try a catalog item. It is authoring software, not a required player accessory.
How to protect a playthrough before experimenting
Separate achievement goals from experimentation
If a character is intended for a completionist or achievement-focused run, verify the tag before adding anything. A second character is a practical way to experiment without mixing an unverified Creation into the run whose achievement history you want to preserve.

Read the listing immediately before installation
Catalog descriptions and labels can change. Check the current entry for what it adds, prerequisites, supported platform and game-build notes at the moment you install. An old guide may accurately describe an earlier version but cannot establish the present status of a volatile catalog entry.
Keep an exit path
Know which save you will load if you need to back out. Bethesda’s documented fallback is to disable the Creation and use Select Character from the Load menu to return to an original save. The support guidance does not define a universal backup schedule or guarantee that deleting an item repairs all affected saves, so preserve a clean save before making a change you cannot easily reverse.
Questions to answer for any specific Creation
Before installation, you should be able to answer all of these from the item’s current listing and Bethesda’s current guidance:
- What exactly does this entry add?
- Is it marked Achievement Friendly right now?
- Which platform and Starfield build does it support?
- Does it require another Creation or a particular order of installation?
- Can I accept the risk of using it on this character?
- Which original save will I use if I need to disable it?
If any answer is missing, postpone installation rather than filling the gap with a universal assumption. Bethesda’s official pages establish the menu, achievement policy and recovery route, but they do not publish a complete compatibility matrix for every Creation.
Bottom line for installing Starfield mods
Use Starfield’s Creations menu when you want Bethesda’s supported in-game route, and judge each entry individually. Confirm its content, requirements, platform and game-build notes, then check the current Achievement Friendly label before installing. Bethesda says ordinary Creations disable achievements, and achievements will not retroactively unlock on an earlier save that used Creations even if the item later becomes friendly. If a problem appears, disable or delete the item from the Creations Library and use Select Character in the Load menu to return to an original save, while remembering that Bethesda does not guarantee complete reversal of every save change.
