In the U.S. Starbucks Rewards program, Green members’ unredeemed Stars expire six months after they are earned. A qualifying action in the calendar month before an expiring batch’s original deadline can extend those Stars by one month. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while the member maintains that status.
Starbucks publishes six redemption levels—25, 60, 100, 200, 300 and 400 Stars. Each level applies to particular products and has a maximum reward value, so there is no single guaranteed cash value for every Star. Your Star balance is also separate from your status progress: redeeming a Reward spends Stars but does not reduce the Stars you have earned toward Gold or Reserve qualification.
Scope: the U.S. program after the March 10, 2026 redesign
This explanation applies to Starbucks Rewards in the United States. Starbucks introduced the current Green, Gold and Reserve structure on March 10, 2026. Program rules, eligible products, participating cafés and offers can change, so use the terms and account information shown in the Starbucks app when a decision depends on a specific transaction.
Starbucks reported 35.5 million 90-day active members for Q1 FY26 in its launch announcement. That is a company-reported figure for that quarter, not a current October 2026 membership count.

How the three status levels work
Your level determines the published rate at which you earn Stars. Qualification is based on Stars earned during the applicable 12-month period, including Bonus Stars. Redeeming Stars does not subtract from that qualification total.

What counts toward status
Star-earning activity and Bonus Stars both count toward the relevant qualification period under the published FAQ. Because redemption does not reduce the qualification total, you can use a Reward and still retain the progress already recorded for Gold or Reserve.
What happened to Stars during the redesign
Starbucks says existing Stars remained in members’ accounts when the March 2026 program changed. The balance shown in your account, rather than a calculation based on the launch date, is the starting point for deciding what can be redeemed or when a Green batch expires.

When Green Stars expire
The six-month rule
For a Green member, each batch of unredeemed Stars expires six months after it was earned. Expiration is tied to the earning date, so different portions of your balance can have different deadlines. Check the expiration information in your Starbucks account instead of assuming that every Star shares one date.
Gold and Reserve treatment
Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire as long as the member maintains the applicable status. The public FAQ does not spell out every account-specific result after a status change, so check the current terms and the expiration information displayed in your account if your level changes.

How to extend expiring Green Stars
A Green member can extend an expiring batch by one month by completing a qualifying action during the calendar month before that batch’s original expiration date. Starbucks’ FAQ says this extension can be repeated, but each extension still depends on completing an eligible action in the required month.
Three qualifying actions
- Make a qualifying Star-earning purchase at a participating Starbucks café.
- Redeem a Reward at a participating Starbucks café.
- Digitally reload at least $30 to a Starbucks Card. The FAQ’s footnote specifically calls out a reload through the Starbucks app; verify the current terms before relying on another digital channel.
Calendar timing example
If a batch is scheduled to expire on April 1, an eligible action taken during March can move the deadline to May 1. The action must occur in the calendar month before the original expiration; waiting until April does not satisfy the March requirement for that batch.

Transactions that do not qualify for the purchase route
Starbucks excludes Starbucks Card purchases, alcohol and delivery services from the qualifying-purchase route described for extensions. A transaction that falls into one of those categories should not be used as your only plan to save an expiring Green balance. Participating-café and product restrictions also apply to the purchase and Reward options.
How to protect a balance in practice
- Open your Starbucks account and note the expiration date shown for the Stars you intend to keep.
- Put a reminder in the preceding calendar month, not on the expiration date itself.
- Use one of the three qualifying actions, keeping the receipt or in-app transaction record until the account reflects the activity.
- Recheck the account after the transaction. Starbucks does not publicly describe every way an extension appears on every account, so the displayed date is the useful confirmation.
How Stars are earned
The published rates are 1 Star per dollar for Green, 1.2 for Gold and 1.7 for Reserve. The exact number awarded for a transaction can also depend on the program’s qualifying-transaction rules and any active offer.
Bonus Stars from digital reloads
The FAQ describes qualifying digital Starbucks Card reload bonuses of 10 Bonus Stars for a reload of $30 or more and 25 Bonus Stars for a reload of $50 or more, subject to the program terms. These Bonus Stars count toward status qualification under the published FAQ. A reload used to earn a bonus is not automatically the same thing as a qualifying purchase for every other promotion, so read the offer language attached to the transaction.

Clean personal cups
Starbucks says Rewards members earn double Stars on their transaction when they use a clean personal cup at participating cafés. Participation, eligible ordering channels and other conditions can vary, so confirm that the café and transaction qualify before treating the multiplier as guaranteed.

These are the six published U.S. tiers. The category and dollar limit are more useful than treating a Star as a fixed currency unit.

Caps, availability and paying the difference
The dollar figures are maximum reward values, not a promise that every item in the category is available at every café. Participating locations, inventory, exclusions and offer terms apply. If the item you want costs more than the tier’s cap, Starbucks says you may pay the difference and still redeem the Reward, where the item and transaction are eligible.
What the caps imply about value
Dividing each maximum cap by its Star requirement gives a theoretical ceiling, not a guaranteed return:

There is no independent, universal cash valuation for a Star in the published materials. Your practical value depends on the item’s actual price, whether it is eligible, and whether you would have bought it without the Reward. A lower-priced item can produce less than the listed cap even though the same number of Stars is required.

How to redeem without losing track of eligibility
- Check your balance and level. Use the Starbucks app or account page to see available Stars, status and any displayed expiration information.
- Choose the tier before ordering. Match the item to the category and cap shown for the tier. For a 60-Star Reward, remember that the published discount excludes gift cards.
- Confirm the café and channel. Rewards are limited to participating cafés, and delivery or other channels may have different eligibility.
- Select or apply the Reward in the account’s ordering or Rewards flow. The exact labels and offer availability can change, so follow the options currently shown in your account.
- Review the order total. If the eligible item exceeds the cap, decide whether paying the difference still makes sense before confirming.
- Keep the transaction record. It shows which Stars were spent and helps resolve a missing Reward or unexpected balance change with Starbucks support.
Star balance versus status progress
These are two separate measurements. The balance is the number of unredeemed Stars available for Rewards and, for Green members, subject to expiration. Status progress is the total Stars earned during the applicable qualification period. Redeeming 100 Stars, for example, reduces the spendable balance by 100 but does not erase the 100 Stars from your qualification progress. Bonus Stars are included in status tracking according to the FAQ.
This distinction matters when deciding whether to redeem before a qualification deadline: using Stars does not by itself move you farther from Gold or Reserve, while failing to use an expiring Green balance can leave value unused.

Waiting until the expiration date
The Green extension window is the preceding calendar month. An action taken after that window cannot be assumed to rescue the batch. Set the reminder as soon as the account displays the deadline.
Counting a reload or purchase that is excluded
Card purchases, alcohol and delivery services are excluded from the qualifying-purchase route for extensions. Use a clearly eligible café transaction or the app’s qualifying digital reload path instead, and verify the current terms.

Published categories are not a guarantee of local inventory or participation. Check the item and café in the app before ordering, particularly for merchandise and limited food choices.

Calling the cap a guaranteed value
A $10 cap on a 200-Star Reward does not mean every 200-Star redemption is worth $10. The item must be eligible and priced at or above that amount; otherwise the realized value is lower.
Confusing expiration with qualification
Green expiration concerns unredeemed Stars. Gold and Reserve qualification concerns Stars earned in a 12-month period. Redeeming Stars affects the first measurement, not the second.
Linked programs and other benefits
Starbucks names Delta SkyMiles and Marriott Bonvoy as programs that can be linked to Rewards accounts. The published announcement does not establish current conversion rates, detailed linking rules or availability for every member. Check Starbucks and the partner’s live terms before linking an account or expecting a particular benefit.
The same caution applies to all offers, multipliers and merchandise availability: the app and current Rewards terms control what your account can use at a particular time.

- If you are Green and a deadline is approaching: use an eligible café purchase, Reward redemption or qualifying digital reload during the preceding calendar month, then confirm the new date in your account.
- If you are choosing among tiers: start with the product you actually want, check its eligibility and price, and compare that price with the tier’s cap rather than assuming a fixed Star rate.
- If you are pursuing Gold or Reserve: track Stars earned in the 12-month qualification period. Redeeming does not reduce that progress, but only qualifying earned Stars count.
- If an account display conflicts with your expectation: rely on the date and status shown in the account, review the current terms and contact Starbucks support with the transaction record.
