Short answer: Squadron 42 is not a single-player mode for Star Citizen. It is a separate, offline, story-driven military campaign set in the same universe. Its planned mix of cockpit missions, first-person combat, puzzles and branching character relationships makes it closer to a cinematic space-opera than to an open-ended space sandbox. As of October 18, 2026, it is still unreleased and is officially scheduled for the second quarter of 2027.
What Squadron 42 is, and what it is not
Cloud Imperium Games describes Squadron 42 as a “Hollywood-caliber story-driven single-player game set in Star Citizen’s universe.” That wording is important: this is a standalone campaign, not an offline toggle inside Star Citizen and not merely a private server for the online game.
You play a recruit in the United Empire of Earth Navy. The campaign is built around a capital ship and an authored sequence of military missions. The expected experience combines flying a spacecraft, fighting on foot in first person, solving environmental or mission puzzles, and participating in large set pieces. PC Gamer’s synthesis of the announced design suggests an approximately even split between cockpit missions and on-foot play.
Star Citizen has a different purpose. It is the persistent online space-sim in the same setting, where players decide whether to trade, fight, haul cargo, explore, mine or simply socialize. Its activity is generated by a continuing multiplayer universe rather than by one fixed protagonist’s campaign.

Can you play Squadron 42 yet?
No. The latest official Roberts Space Industries support information, updated October 13, 2026, says that Squadron 42 is still in development, is not available for download and is currently scheduled for Q2 2027. That is a target, not a guaranteed launch date; development schedules can move, so check the current official status immediately before buying or planning around it.
The availability distinction is practical. An accessible Star Citizen package can be used through an RSI account and game package, while there is no downloadable Squadron 42 campaign to install today. Do not interpret a pledge or account entitlement associated with the broader project as proof that the single-player game is playable.
What the planned campaign is expected to contain
Cockpit missions and dogfighting
Space combat is one of the campaign’s two major activity pillars. Missions are expected to include ship-to-ship dogfights and larger battles, with the player operating from a cockpit rather than watching combat through a purely cinematic cut-scene. The game’s identity therefore depends partly on how its flight, targeting and mission systems feel in motion, not only on its dialogue scenes.
On-foot first-person action
The other major pillar is first-person play aboard ships and installations. Announced material describes infantry combat, movement through shipboard spaces and mission situations that are not solved by flying alone. The roughly equal cockpit/on-foot split reported by PC Gamer is an expectation about campaign structure, not a measured final ratio.

Puzzles, choices and mission paths
Some scenarios are expected to include puzzles and alternate ways to progress. Character-definition choices and multiple mission paths are intended to give the player more influence than a completely linear shooting gallery. A dynamic reputation system is also planned to affect relationships with non-player characters, so the consequences may appear in how crew members and other characters respond to the protagonist.
A military story with an actor-led cast
The announced cast includes Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Ben Mendelsohn, John Rhys-Davies and Andy Serkis. Those performers support the game’s cinematic positioning, but a famous cast does not establish the quality of the final script, acting direction or release build.
Chris Roberts has claimed that the campaign will run for more than 40 hours. PC Gamer reported that statement as a 2025 developer claim. It should be treated as an estimate from the developer, not as independently tested player runtime.

Choose Squadron 42 if you want a directed sequence with a beginning, middle and end, cinematic staging and a controlled protagonist experience. Choose Star Citizen if the appeal is spending hundreds of hours making your own goals in a changing online universe. Sharing lore, technology and a development ecosystem does not make the two products interchangeable.

How it compares with Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous is the closest comparison when the priority is realistic piloting and ship management. Space.com classifies it as a space-flight-simulation MMO and lists its release date as December 16, 2014. Its appeal comes from learning a demanding flight model, managing a ship and choosing a long-term path through a large online galaxy. The game also includes on-foot exploration and combat and a continuing narrative layer.
The contrast is about purpose rather than a simple quality ranking:
- Pick Squadron 42 for: authored military pacing, cinematic scenes, a defined recruit protagonist and mission-to-mission progression.
- Pick Elite Dangerous for: flight practice, navigation, ship systems and the freedom to build a career over time.
Elite Dangerous is released and playable now. Squadron 42 cannot yet provide a hands-on alternative for someone who specifically wants to fly today, regardless of how similar the marketing language may sound.

No Man’s Sky is the better reference point for exploration and survival. Space.com describes it as an open-world survival space sim and lists its release date as August 9, 2016. Its loop centers on discovering worlds, gathering resources, building bases, using planetary vehicles and operating capital ships. Archaeology and years of free updates add additional activities.

That design deliberately leaves room for self-directed play. You can spend an evening scanning a planet, expanding a base or collecting materials without following a military plot. Squadron 42 is expected to use its locations and ships as stages for authored missions and character drama instead.
- Choose No Man’s Sky if: you want a finished, immediately playable exploration-survival sandbox with construction and resource loops.
- Watch Squadron 42 if: you want the next mission, the next story reveal and a campaign structured around naval service.
How it compares with Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition
Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition is the strongest comparison for cinematic space-opera presentation and consequential relationships. Space.com describes the series as known for branching narrative and choices that can affect individuals, species and the wider galaxy; the Legendary Edition released on May 14, 2021.
The two games differ in how you inhabit their worlds. Mass Effect 2 is an established third-person action RPG organized around squad relationships, dialogue choices and cover-based combat. Squadron 42 is planned as a first-person experience that places you directly in a cockpit or shipboard space, with puzzles and military operations woven into the campaign.

How it compares with Everspace 2
Everspace 2 is the closest comparison for immediate, colorful space shooting and equipment progression. Space.com classifies it as an action-RPG space shooter and lists its full release as April 6, 2023. It offers a story-led open universe with survival and betrayal themes, color-coded loot and a balance between arcade accessibility and simulation detail.
The decision is straightforward:
- Choose Everspace 2 for: ship combat you can play now, loot upgrades, builds and replayable action.
- Choose Squadron 42 for: the prospect of a large actor-led military campaign in which flying is one part of a broader first-person narrative.
Everspace 2 is not a substitute for a naval drama with on-foot scenes, but it is a practical alternative if the immediate need is responsive space combat and progression.

This framework avoids treating “space game” as one genre. A player can reasonably prefer Mass Effect 2 for dialogue, Elite Dangerous for flight and No Man’s Sky for exploration without any contradiction. Squadron 42 is trying to combine several of those impulses inside one authored campaign, which is also why its eventual execution matters more than a feature checklist.
What the release status means for buying decisions
Do not buy on the assumption that a campaign is available
Because the official status says there is no download yet, any purchase decision should begin by identifying exactly what entitlement is being sold. A Star Citizen package belongs to the online project; it is not evidence that the Squadron 42 campaign can be launched today.
Treat the schedule as changeable
Q2 2027 is the current official target reported on October 13, 2026. It is useful for planning, but it is not a guaranteed ship date. Recheck the official RSI support information before making hardware, holiday or time-off plans around the release.
Separate production scale from readiness
Cloud Imperium Games announced that community funding for Star Citizen and Squadron 42 had crossed $1 billion in 2026. That figure indicates the scale of the project’s funding history; it does not verify a final build, campaign length or launch quality. Likewise, a recognizable cast can raise expectations without proving that the finished game will deliver on them.
Bottom line
Squadron 42 should be understood as a planned, offline, cinematic military campaign that shares a universe with Star Citizen but is structurally separate from it. It is the most relevant choice for players who want cockpit combat, first-person shipboard action, puzzles and character-driven missions in one directed story. It is not playable yet: the current official target is Q2 2027. Until then, use Elite Dangerous for realistic piloting, No Man’s Sky for exploration and survival, Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition for cinematic choices, or Everspace 2 for loot-focused space combat.
