A sports game can be missing from a streaming service you pay for because the service does not hold the right to show that game live in your location. Leagues, teams, local broadcasters and national distributors divide rights by event, territory, platform and broadcast window. To find a legitimate way to watch, check the exact game against the league’s current availability guide for your ZIP code or location, then confirm the listed broadcaster or service carries it on your device.
What is a sports blackout?
A blackout is a restriction that prevents a service from showing a particular live game to a viewer in a particular place or broadcast window. It is usually a rights restriction, not a technical fault or a penalty for having the wrong subscription. A service may be licensed to carry a league package overall but still lack permission to show one locally protected game, or a nationally exclusive game, to you.
ESPN Fan Support explains that blackouts apply to telecasts sold regionally or locally under league, conference and local-rightsholder agreements. The NBA says League Pass restrictions reflect exclusive rights held by local and national content providers. In practical terms, the service checks the event and the viewer’s location against the agreements that apply, then permits or blocks the live video accordingly.

The actual alternatives and timing depend on the league, country, game and service.

Why paying for a league package may not be enough
Rights are divided among distributors
Sports rights are licensed for specific audiences, places, platforms and time windows. A league can sell packages of games to national broadcasters or streaming services while teams or local distributors retain rights to games in defined regional markets. A separate agreement may cover a national broadcast or an exclusive streaming window. As a result, a subscription that includes many games is not necessarily an all-access pass to every live game.
In a March 2026 notice, the Federal Communications Commission describes how the Sports Broadcasting Act permits NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL teams to pool certain television rights and sell them in packages. The notice also describes leagues and teams making agreements with multiple national video distributors, alongside local or regional rights arrangements. The precise rights map differs by sport, season, country and game; there is no single rule that makes every league package work the same way.
Local and out-of-market are rights terms, not simple distance rules
“Local” or “in-market” generally means that the viewer is within the broadcast region assigned to a team or its local distributor. “Out-of-market” means outside that designated region. Those boundaries should not be inferred from the nearest city or a fixed mileage radius. Use the league’s current ZIP-code locator, game-availability tool or local listings to establish which market applies to your address.

The same game may therefore have different viewing routes for two fans, even if both have the same subscription. A local viewer could be directed to a local station or regional service, while an out-of-market viewer may be eligible for a league package. A nationally exclusive game can follow a different route again, regardless of a viewer’s local team.
Streaming is part of the rights system
Streaming services do not automatically inherit every right held by a league, cable channel or local station. Contracts define which games a service may show and where. A league’s own app may carry out-of-market games but exclude local games or national broadcasts; a national service may carry selected games but not the rest of the schedule. A pay-TV login, service subscription or supported device can also be a separate requirement from the right to watch the game itself.
How location is determined
Services use location information to decide whether a viewer is inside a protected territory. ESPN says its blackout location is determined by IP address in its blackout explainer and notes that location is used to enforce blackout policies. The NBA says League Pass restrictions can change when device location changes. The exact method and checks can vary by service and device, so a location result from one app should not be assumed to govern every other service.

Location errors can happen. A service may associate a network address with the wrong place, or a device or browser may provide location information that conflicts with the network. If a blackout message seems inconsistent with your actual location, use the service’s support process rather than trying to evade the restriction.
- Confirm that the ZIP code or location shown in the league’s official game locator is current.
- For NBA League Pass, NBA guidance suggests trying another supported platform or browser, clearing app or browser data, or comparing the result on Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- For ESPN, its support guidance suggests using Wi-Fi when mobile location may be causing an error.
- If the service still identifies the wrong market, contact its support team and provide the game, device, location and the error shown.
Changing networks or clearing data may help diagnose an inaccurate location result; it does not change the rights that apply to your actual market. Do not assume that a VPN, proxy or other location-spoofing method is a legitimate fix. It may violate a service’s terms, fail its location checks or leave the game blocked.
How to find the legitimate viewing route for a game
- Identify the exact event. Note the league, teams, date and start time. Rights can differ from one game to another, including games in the same team’s schedule.
- Check the league’s current availability page. Enter your current ZIP code or location where the official tool allows it. The NBA and NFL offer ZIP-code checks; ESPN directs MLB and NHL viewers to official availability information. Follow the current-season guide, since listings and contracts can change.
- Look for the broadcast window. Determine whether the listing calls the game local or regional, out-of-market, nationally broadcast, exclusive, or a simulcast. That label often determines why a league package does or does not show it.
- Confirm the listed channel or service. Check the broadcaster’s own schedule and whether its app, pay-TV package or supported-device offering carries the event in your area. A listing is a starting point, not proof that every subscription tier includes access.
- Check live, replay and audio options separately. If live video is unavailable, the league or service may offer a delayed replay or audio. Confirm the current timing and device availability for that game rather than assuming the live blackout also applies to every format.
- Consider over-the-air reception only when it fits. If an eligible local game is carried by a broadcast station, an HDTV antenna may receive it at your address if signal conditions permit. An antenna cannot unlock a subscription-exclusive game or override a contractual blackout.
When comparing options, check the market, broadcast window, country, device, live-versus-replay availability and total mix of services needed. Do not calculate a season’s cost from a single package price: verify which games it covers and check current subscription prices for every required service.

| NBA League Pass, Canada | The same guide says nationally broadcast games are blacked out in Canada and describes replay availability as a few hours after the broadcast. | Check the Canadian listing for the event; do not apply U.S. blackout rules or replay timing to Canada. |
| NBA League Pass, other countries | The guide says every NBA game is available live with League Pass in other countries. | This statement is about NBA League Pass and the guide’s stated scope. It does not establish availability for another league, service or country-specific product. |
| NFL+ | The NFL regular-season guide dated July 17, 2025 describes live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on phones and tablets, NFL Network games on supported devices, and live audio for every game across supported devices. It defines out-of-market games as outside the viewer’s designated broadcast region. NFL+ is available in the United States, not U.S. territories. | Enter a ZIP code on the NFL Ways to Watch page and verify the current-season guide, game and device. The cited guide is dated 2025 and should not be treated as a guarantee for a later season. |
| NHL, United States | The NHL watch guide separates national games from regional games. It lists ESPN+, Hulu, TNT/Watch TNT/HBO Max and ESPN routes for various national games. For regional games it directs local-market fans to team information and out-of-market fans to NHL Center Ice/ESPN+, while noting some NHL Network regional games are unavailable on ESPN+. | Check the NHL’s current season listing for the specific game and market; platform availability can change. |
| NHL, Canada | The guide lists Sportsnet, Prime Video and TVA for national broadcasts, and Sportsnet+ / NHL Centre Ice routes for regional games outside the local market. | Use the Canadian listing and verify the local-market distinction for the game. |
| MLB.TV | MLB support says certain regular-season, special-event and postseason games can be unavailable domestically and internationally because of MLB exclusivities. It says live audio of all games remains available. | Use MLB’s current game-availability locator for the event. The general rule does not establish specific team territory boundaries. |
These are examples of how packages work, not a permanent directory of every outlet. Rights and platform lineups are season-sensitive. Confirm the game in the current official guide before subscribing or changing plans.

The term “blackout” is sometimes associated with an older federal rule, but that rule is distinct from the contractual restrictions viewers encounter on streaming services. The FCC says it eliminated its sports blackout rule in 2014. The rule, adopted in 1975, addressed the retransmission of distant signals when a local station had blacked out a game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe FCC’s March 4, 2026 Federal Register notice states: “Sports blackouts remain subject to private contractual arrangements between sports teams/leagues and their video program distributors.” In other words, eliminating the federal rule did not erase private agreements that limit where or how a distributor can show a game. The current blackout message on a service should be understood in the context of those contracts, not treated as evidence that the former FCC rule is still operating.

Why one subscription may not cover a whole season
When games are split among local broadcasters, national channels and multiple streaming services, viewers may need more than one service to follow a team or league. The FCC’s 2026 notice says NFL games aired on 10 different services in 2025. It also says 20 NFL regular-season games and one playoff game were nationally distributed exclusively on four streaming services that year: Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Peacock and Netflix. Those figures describe the 2025 distribution landscape cited by the notice, not a promise about future seasons.
The same notice cites “some estimates” that watching all NFL games in 2025 could cost over $1,500. That is an attributed estimate, not a price calculated by the FCC or a universal bill for every viewer. Actual cost depends on which games a person wants, their location, available broadcast reception, existing subscriptions and the prices in effect when they watch.
Before buying a new service, map the games you care about to their listed outlets and compare what you already have with what remains uncovered. A league package can be useful for eligible out-of-market games but still leave local or nationally exclusive broadcasts to another provider. Confirm the whole viewing route—including device limits—rather than relying on a service’s broad league label.
What to do when the game still will not play
- The app says “blacked out.” Check the official locator for the game and your current location. If the listing confirms a blackout, follow the named local or national broadcaster’s route or check whether a replay or audio option is offered.
- The app shows the wrong market. Check the ZIP code and location settings, try the service’s recommended browser or device steps, and contact support if the mismatch remains. Network changes can help identify a location-detection problem but do not alter contractual eligibility.
- The game appears in the schedule but not in your subscription. Verify whether it is a national exclusive, local telecast, or a game requiring a separate broadcaster login or device. Schedule visibility does not necessarily mean the service has live rights for your location.
- You are traveling or watching from another country. Recheck the locator from the place where you are watching. Territory rules can change with location, and a package’s terms in one country should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
- You are considering an antenna. First confirm that a local broadcast station carries the game and that over-the-air reception is possible at your address. It will not provide a game restricted to a subscription platform.
The most reliable answer to “Why is my game blacked out, and where can I watch it?” comes from combining the exact game listing with the correct location and current season’s rights guide. A subscription covers only the games and windows its agreements allow it to show.
