Splinter Cell: Double Agent co-op is a challenge playlist for one to three human Spy players. You and up to two teammates enter timed maps against AI Bot Mercenaries, then divide practical duties such as scouting, hacking, carrying files and covering the extraction route. There are no locked classes: every human player is a Spy with the same core equipment, and the team decides who performs each job. The exact objectives and scoring depend on the challenge, while edition and platform determine whether you can play locally today; Ubisoft says the game’s online multiplayer and co-op services are no longer functional.
What co-op is in Double Agent
The PC and Xbox 360 manual describes co-op as: “Team up with 1–2 Spies to play various missions against AI Bot Mercenaries.” In practical terms, that means a session can have one player, two players, or a full group of three human Spies. The opponents are computer-controlled Mercenaries, not human players.
Co-op is organized as a set of challenges rather than one continuous campaign. You select a challenge, load into its map, complete the objectives under that challenge’s rules and receive a result that can contribute to a bronze, silver or gold medal. Some challenges reward a team for securing complete files; others count partial or total downloaded data. A challenge can therefore feel cooperative in one round and more competitive between teammates in another, even though the Bot Mercenaries remain the common enemy.

Team size and player identity

How a co-op challenge unfolds
The following sequence describes the common flow. Individual maps can change what must be collected or extracted, so read the challenge’s objective before committing the team to a route.

- Choose a challenge. Training Course serves as the tutorial. Other selections center on downloading files, collecting data or maximizing a score. The name of the challenge matters because it determines whether complete files, quarter-files or total data are valuable.
- Enter the timed map. Co-op takes place inside a timed challenge. Use the opening moments to identify patrol paths, objective colors and the safest approach rather than sprinting directly toward the first terminal.
- Locate the colored objectives. Objectives are marked so the team can plan a route. A player with night vision or thermal vision can check dark areas, identify movement and watch likely Mercenary approaches while another Spy advances.
- Coordinate access and hacking. The Spy hacking device can download server data, hack digital locks and turn lights off. The Xbox 360 guide also describes wireless interaction with electronic devices and the ability to destroy windows and lights. One player normally operates the device while another watches the approach or creates a safer path.
- Collect the required amount of data. Depending on the mode, the team may need complete files, two assembled files, or simply the highest possible percentage of data. Do not assume that a partially downloaded file is worth the same thing in every challenge.
- Extract when the rules require it. A complete file must be carried back to the control drone in challenges that use file security. Reaching the download point is not the end of that type of round: the carrier still needs a protected route back.
- Review the result. Finishing a challenge produces a score and can award a bronze, silver or gold medal. In an individual challenge, the scoreboard can rank the human Spies separately instead of treating every download as a shared team total.
What each player does
Because Double Agent does not lock characters into classes, the most useful way to assign jobs is by task. A three-player group can give each Spy a primary responsibility, while a solo player has to perform all of them in sequence.
Scout and cover
The scout moves ahead or watches from a safe position. Night vision helps in dark spaces, while thermal vision reveals living targets through conditions in which ordinary sight is less useful. The scout’s job is to identify Mercenary patrols, cameras or blocked approaches, then warn the hacker before an interaction begins.
Cover is an active responsibility, not simply standing nearby. The covering Spy watches the route, distracts or delays a Bot when possible and keeps an escape path open. In a timed map, preventing one alarm or interruption can save more time than rushing through a terminal and having to repeat the approach.

Hacker and objective operator
The hacker carries out the interaction that advances the objective. The hacking device can download server data, open digital locks and switch lights off; the Xbox 360 documentation describes these as wireless interactions with electronic devices. Positioning matters because the hacker is often stationary and vulnerable while progress is being made.

A good hacker calls out when the interaction starts and when it is nearly complete. That lets the scout adjust cover and lets the eventual carrier move into position without exposing the objective prematurely. If the route becomes unsafe, stop treating the terminal as the only priority: surviving with the team intact is usually more valuable than forcing an interrupted download.
Courier and extractor
When a mode requires complete files to be secured, one Spy becomes the courier. This player brings the completed file to the control drone. The courier should not automatically be the person who performed the download; a teammate who is already positioned near the return route may be better suited to carry it.
Before starting the final portion of a file, identify the extraction path and decide which Spy will carry. The other players can then move ahead, watch intersections and recover the route if a Bot patrol shifts. Losing the carrier late in a round can erase the value of an otherwise successful download.

The third player, or any available teammate, can fill gaps: watch a second route, recover a file after a failed approach, draw attention away from the hacker or help the courier reach the control drone. Players can swap the single carried gadget at the gadget stock, so the most useful equipment can change between objectives.

Some editions or situations also permit support actions such as helping an injured teammate or concealing movement. These are tactical possibilities rather than permanent abilities. Rotate duties when the map changes: a player who scouted the first objective may be the best courier for the second because that person already knows the return route.
Challenge objectives and scoring
The challenge name is a ruleset, not just a map label. These are the distinctions that determine what your team should prioritize.

The most important scoring distinction is complete versus partial data. In Files Race, downloading a fragment but failing to secure a complete file does not satisfy the same goal as returning a finished file. In Maximum Percentage, by contrast, the team can maximize its total by collecting data even when no complete file reaches the drone. 25% Max sits between those ideas: quarter-file objectives must be combined into two team files.
How to coordinate a three-Spy team
Before the first terminal
- Agree on the challenge’s win condition: complete files, two assembled files or maximum data.
- Choose an initial scout, hacker and courier. Treat those as temporary assignments, not classes.
- Use vision tools to identify a route and a fallback route before anyone begins a long download.
- Decide who will carry a complete file and who will escort that player to the control drone.
During an objective
- The scout announces patrol movement and keeps the hacker informed rather than wandering far enough to lose contact.
- The hacker starts the interaction only after the cover player confirms a usable escape path.
- The support Spy watches the opposite approach or prepares the next objective so the team does not regroup in an exposed area.
- When the objective is complete, call out whether the item is partial data, a quarter-file section or a complete file; that determines the next move.
On the return trip
- Move the courier through the route that has already been checked, not necessarily the shortest route on the map.
- Keep one Spy ahead and one behind when the challenge requires a file to reach the control drone.
- If a Bot blocks the planned path, use the hacking device’s light-control capability or another available gadget to create a safer alternative instead of splitting the group without warning.
Co-op versus Versus multiplayer
Double Agent uses “multiplayer” for more than one ruleset. Co-op challenges put all human players on the Spy side against AI Bot Mercenaries. Versus is a different mode: human Spies infiltrate and hack objectives while human Upsilon Mercenaries protect systems, track intruders and eliminate them. In the Versus rules described by the manual, Spies must return two complete files.

Is Double Agent co-op split-screen or online?
There is no single answer for every release. The Xbox listing for its Double Agent edition identifies local co-op and shared or split-screen capability, while the PC and Xbox 360 manual describes the co-op challenge structure. That means local play can exist as an edition-specific feature, but you should confirm the exact platform, release and console compatibility before buying a used copy.
Online availability is clearer. Ubisoft’s current product page states: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” Treat legacy online co-op as discontinued rather than assuming that an old server, matchmaking menu or internet connection will restore it.

- Edition: PC, Xbox 360 and other releases can expose different local-play features.
- Connection type: a listing that says local, shared or split-screen is not evidence that online services still operate.
- Hardware: verify that the disc or digital entitlement works on the console or backward-compatible system you intend to use.
- Player count: the manual’s co-op format supports up to three human Spies, but a specific local implementation may impose its own display or controller requirements.
Can you still play Double Agent multiplayer?
You should distinguish “can launch a local mode” from “can use the original online service.” According to Ubisoft’s current support statement, online multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. A compatible edition that includes local co-op may still allow people in the same room to play, subject to the console, disc and controller setup. The evidence does not establish a current official online replacement, a supported matchmaking service or a guaranteed compatibility result for every modern system.

If your goal is specifically the three-Spy challenge experience, look for an edition whose own listing explicitly identifies local co-op or shared/split-screen play. If your goal is online play with distant friends, assume it is unavailable unless the platform owner provides a separately documented, currently working service for that exact edition.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every download must become a complete file
That approach wastes time in Maximum Percentage, where total data is the target and complete-file security is unnecessary. Read the mode rule first.
Leaving the hacker unprotected
A stationary Spy is easy for a patrol to interrupt. Assign cover, use vision tools and keep a fallback route open before beginning a long interaction.
Confusing individual challenges with team scoring
Double Agent and Best Agent can make human Spies compete for data or file results. Coordinate against the Bots, but do not expect every point to be shared.
Extracting without a plan
In file-based challenges, downloading is only half the task. Choose the courier and check the route to the control drone before the final segment begins.
Expecting online services to work because the menu exists
An old multiplayer menu does not override the current support status. Ubisoft says online multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional; verify local support for the exact edition instead.
What to remember
Double Agent co-op is best understood as flexible, objective-based stealth for up to three human Spies against AI Mercenaries. One player scouts and covers, another hacks or downloads, and another carries files or prepares extraction, but those jobs can change at any time. Files Race, 25% Max and Maximum Percentage reward different kinds of progress, while Double Agent and Best Agent introduce individual competition among the Spies. Finally, edition matters: local or split-screen capability may remain available on a compatible Xbox listing, but Ubisoft’s current statement rules out the original online multiplayer and co-op service.
