Speculative decoding can reduce the number of sequential steps a large language model (LLM) needs to generate text: a draft mechanism proposes several tokens, and the target model checks them together. “Free” guessing is shorthand, not a claim that computation costs nothing. Drafting and verification use compute and memory, so the speed benefit depends on whether the target-model steps saved outweigh that extra work.
What is speculative decoding?
Most LLMs generate text autoregressively: each new token depends on the tokens before it, so ordinary decoding advances through repeated target-model steps. Speculative decoding changes how those steps are scheduled. A drafter proposes a short continuation, then the target model verifies candidate tokens together and accepts an appropriate prefix. If a candidate is rejected, the decoding algorithm corrects course and generation continues.
With rejection-sampling-based draft-and-verify methods, verification can preserve the target model’s output distribution while reducing sequential target-model rounds. That guarantee belongs to the particular algorithm and its conditions; it should not be assumed for every method that predicts multiple tokens. NVIDIA’s overview of speculative decoding explains the draft-and-verify approach.

How does speculative decoding work?
- Draft: A separate lightweight model or a model-native mechanism proposes several future tokens.
- Verify: The target model evaluates the proposed continuation in a batch rather than requiring a separate sequential round for each candidate.
- Accept or correct: The algorithm accepts a matching prefix. If a candidate fails verification, it handles the rejection or correction before generation proceeds.
The advantage is fewer serial target-model steps, not an absence of work. The drafter consumes compute; verification still costs compute; and additional state can put pressure on GPU memory and the key-value (KV) cache. A useful speedup occurs when the target-model steps saved exceed those costs.

What is MTP in LLMs?
MTP means multi-token prediction. It describes a model-native approach that trains a model to predict future token positions, rather than only its immediate next token. In DeepSeek-V3, the technical report says this objective densifies training signals and may help data efficiency or future-token anticipation. At inference, native MTP modules can provide draft tokens for speculative decoding when the checkpoint and serving software support them. DeepSeek-AI’s DeepSeek-V3 technical report describes both roles; NVIDIA Megatron Core’s MTP documentation describes the training and module context.
MTP and speculative decoding are related but not interchangeable terms: MTP is a prediction mechanism or training objective; speculative decoding is an inference strategy that drafts and verifies tokens. Speculative decoding can use a separate small draft model instead of MTP.

Does speculative decoding change output quality?
For a rejection-sampling-based draft-and-verify method, the target model remains the authority over which tokens are accepted, and the method can preserve the target model’s output distribution. That does not mean all multi-token prediction methods have the same guarantee. The exact algorithm matters, so check its stated sampling or quality guarantees rather than assuming that a technique is equivalent to speculative decoding.
Why is the “guessing” not actually free?
- Drafting has a cost: A separate draft model requires its own computation. Native MTP avoids the need for a separate drafter in some setups, but still performs prediction work.
- Verification has a cost: The target model must process proposed tokens, even when it can check them in parallel.
- Memory and concurrency matter: Drafting and verification can use GPU memory and KV-cache capacity that would otherwise serve requests or support a larger batch.
- Acceptance matters: Short accepted prefixes mean fewer serial steps are avoided. Acceptance can vary across requests, datasets, and output positions.
So “free” describes the possibility of amortizing target-model work across verified tokens. It does not mean zero additional compute, zero latency, or a guaranteed speedup.

When can it make generation faster?
The best opportunity is a workload constrained by sequential decoding latency where the drafter proposes useful tokens often enough to offset drafting and verification overhead. Performance depends on draft latency, accepted-prefix length, verification cost, workload, hardware, batch size, memory pressure, and serving implementation.
In its documented TensorRT-LLM implementation, NVIDIA says speedups are observable at low batch sizes. That is implementation-specific guidance, not a rule for every deployment. A 2026 preprint’s abstract cautions that target verification can dominate execution and that acceptance length varies by output position, request, and dataset. TensorRT-LLM’s speculative decoding documentation covers its implementation; the 2026 preprint abstract discusses production-condition variability.

What do the published DeepSeek-V3 figures show?
DeepSeek-AI’s 2024 technical report reports an 85–90% second-token acceptance rate across its evaluated generation topics and 1.8 times as many tokens per second in its DeepSeek-V3 evaluation. These are results for that report’s model and evaluation, not universal acceptance or speedup figures for MTP or speculative decoding.
What should you check before choosing an implementation?
- Draft source and cost: Determine whether the drafter is native to the model or requires a separate model, and measure its latency.
- Acceptance behavior: Measure accepted-prefix length on your own prompts and output types; aggregate rates can hide differences by request and token position.
- Verification and memory: Include target verification time, GPU memory, KV-cache pressure, and the concurrency or batch size your service needs.
- Checkpoint compatibility: Confirm that the specific model architecture and checkpoint expose the required prediction mechanism.
- Serving support: Check that your inference engine implements the method for that model and version, then benchmark the full serving workload rather than draft speed alone.
TensorRT-LLM’s rolling documentation lists MTP, EAGLE3, n-gram, draft-target, PARD, and DFlash among its speculative-decoding methods and uses MTPDecodingConfig for MTP configuration. The current TensorRT-LLM documentation notes that native support depends on model architectures and checkpoints. The vLLM Speculators documentation identifies native MTP support for specified model families. Both documentation sets can change, so compatibility and configuration are version-sensitive.

A practical comparison should measure end-to-end latency and throughput under the intended workload, along with accepted-prefix length, memory use, and concurrency. A speed figure from another model or serving stack is not a substitute for those measurements.
