Spectroscopy can help identify a chicken embryo’s sex before hatch by analyzing light associated with embryo blood vessels or sex-linked traits. But “in-egg spectroscopy” covers several distinct research methods, and their reported accuracy depends on the technique, incubation day, egg batch and breed. Experimental results do not yet establish one method as universally reliable or routinely deployed at hatchery scale.
How does spectroscopy sex chicken eggs?
Spectroscopy measures how a sample interacts with light. In egg-sexing research, the measured signal can come from blood circulating in vessels outside the embryo or from optical differences associated with sex-linked feather-color traits. The equipment and biological signal differ across approaches, so results from one method cannot be assumed to apply to another.
Raman spectroscopy: signals from embryo blood vessels
A 2016 study in Analytical Chemistry analyzed light scattered by molecular constituents in blood circulating through extraembryonic vessels. The team reported contactless sex determination at incubation day 3.5, with 90% accuracy in its study conditions. This finding is specific to that method and experiment, not a general performance guarantee. Read the 2016 study.

Visible-near-infrared spectroscopy: signals linked to feather color
A 2022 study illuminated eggs individually and measured the returning visible-near-infrared signal. Its approach relied on lines with sex-specific down-feather color differences, and it was tested using ISA Brown eggs. That biological dependency matters: the reported performance should not be generalized to breeds that lack the relevant color distinction. Read the 2022 study.

Hyperspectral imaging: many wavelengths plus image analysis
Hyperspectral imaging records optical information across many wavelengths and can be paired with image or texture analysis. A 2022 Wageningen University & Research conference abstract describes it as a possible route toward commercial deployment, while noting challenges with high-accuracy requirements, scaling and transferring methods to other breeds. It is research-stage context, not evidence that a system is currently deployed in hatcheries. Read the conference abstract.
How accurate are the reported methods?
The results below come from different techniques, samples, incubation days and validation conditions. They are not a directly comparable leaderboard.

The 2022 study’s different day-specific results show why timing belongs beside any accuracy figure: a result on day 3.5 cannot be treated as interchangeable with one obtained on day 14. When can an egg be sexed?
There is no single timing that applies to every spectroscopy approach. The 2016 Raman study reported results at day 3.5, while the 2022 visible-NIR study reported its listed predictions on days 12–14 and day 18 under a separate eggshell-correction approach. These are study-specific findings, not an established universal testing schedule.

What limits transfer to other eggs or hatcheries?
- Breed and biological signal: The high visible-NIR results were developed for ISA Brown eggs and depended on lines with gender-specific feather-color differences.
- Incubation timing: As embryo development changes the optical path, performance at one day may not predict performance at another.
- Validation and sample: Accuracy figures depend on the study’s egg batches and methods; a controlled result does not establish repeatable performance across commercial populations.
- Scale and generalization: The Wageningen conference abstract identifies scaling and breed transfer as challenges, and the 2024 handheld NIR study reported results the authors judged insufficient for industrial use.
- Operational evidence: The cited studies and abstract do not establish current commercial deployment, hatchery-scale reliability, or effects on hatchability and egg damage across methods.
To evaluate a claimed system, check its optical method, measurement day, whether sampling is contactless, the egg breeds and shell characteristics tested, sample size and validation design, reported accuracy, hatchability or damage data, and evidence of repeatable industrial deployment.

The evidence supports spectroscopy as a promising set of research approaches, not a single proven, breed-independent solution. One visible-NIR experiment reported very high accuracy for a defined egg type and setup, while a separate handheld NIR study reported 62–68% classification and said the result was inadequate for industrial sexing. The available studies do not establish which systems, if any, are currently deployed commercially at scale.
