A spatial microphone is usually a system of several microphone capsules whose signals are processed together. In a voice-focused array, software compares the timing and level differences between capsules, estimates where speech is coming from, and combines the channels to favor that direction. The result can make speech clearer and reduce off-axis sound, but it cannot guarantee silence: reverberation, competing talkers, placement and processing choices still shape the output.
The term also covers Ambisonics microphones, which perform a different job. They record sound arriving from around the microphone as a sound field that compatible software can later decode for immersive playback. Beamforming chooses or emphasizes a direction; Ambisonics preserves directions for reproduction.
What “spatial microphone” means
“Spatial microphone” is an umbrella term, not a single capsule design. Two uses account for most products described this way:
- Beamforming arrays target speech or another sound source. Multiple capsules feed signal processing that creates a directional pickup pattern, sometimes steered electronically as the speaker moves.
- Spherical or Ambisonics microphones capture the sound field around a point. Their output is encoded for later spatial decoding through headphones or loudspeakers.
Both use several signals and information about direction, but their outputs are intended for different outcomes. A conference array tries to deliver an intelligible voice to a call or recording. An Ambisonics rig tries to preserve where sounds came from so a listener can turn or move within the reproduced scene.

How a voice-focused spatial array captures sound
1. Separate capsules hear the same event at different times
An array places microphone elements at known positions. A talker’s voice reaches each element with slightly different arrival times and levels because the capsules are not at the same point and because the talker is off to one side. Room reflections create additional arrivals. Each capsule is converted to its own audio channel rather than being mixed immediately into one signal.
Geometry matters. Spacing, the number of elements and the array’s shape determine which directional differences the processor can resolve and over what frequency range. A ceiling array, a tabletop bar and a headset therefore have different coverage behavior even when all are marketed as spatial microphones.
2. The system estimates a source direction
A source-localization stage analyzes the channel differences to estimate where a dominant talker is located. The estimate can be fixed by a selected zone or updated as a person moves. The processor is not identifying a human in the way a person does; it is inferring a direction from acoustic evidence.
Localization becomes harder when several people speak at once, when reflections are strong, or when noise is louder than the voice. A system may hold a previous direction, choose one active talker, or produce several beams depending on its design and settings.
3. Beamforming combines channels with delays and gains
Beamforming applies calculated delays, weights and filters to the capsule channels, then sums them. Signals arriving from the favored direction line up more closely and reinforce one another. Signals from other directions line up less well and are reduced by the array’s spatial response. The combined output is an electronic directional microphone: no mechanical swivel is required to point it.

When a localization stage updates the direction, the coefficients change and the beam can follow a moving speaker. A fixed beam can be useful when the talker’s seat is known; adaptive steering is more useful for people walking or turning around a room.
4. Spatial filtering suppresses estimated off-axis sound
After or alongside beamforming, spatial filters can attenuate sound estimated to come from elsewhere. This can lower the level of a loudspeaker, air conditioner or side conversation relative to the target voice. The filter is making a directional decision, not separating every sound perfectly. A competing talker close to the target, or a reflection that arrives from a similar direction, may remain in the output.

The directional output can then pass through other stages such as noise reduction, acoustic-echo cancellation, automatic gain control or voice enhancement. These are separate processing functions; not every spatial microphone includes all of them, and beamforming alone should not be credited with their effects. The final signal sent to a recorder or communications application may therefore differ substantially from the raw capsule channels.
What happens to your voice
Your voice starts as pressure variations arriving at every capsule. The array retains separate channel information long enough to compare those arrivals. A direction estimate and beamformer then produce one or more directional streams. In a single-speaker mode, the stream is optimized for the chosen voice direction. In a multi-beam design, separate streams can be created for different directions before downstream mixing or routing.
The processing does not make a private copy of “your voice” in a human sense. It applies mathematical weights to waveforms. Voice enhancement can change tone, remove parts of words, or create artifacts when the estimate is wrong. Strong filtering may make a distant talker clearer while making nearby background speech sound unnatural. Whether the application receives raw channels, beam outputs or a further-processed mix depends on the product and its configuration.

Why directional pickup is not perfect isolation
Room reverberation
Walls, ceilings and tables reflect speech. The microphone receives those reflections from directions that may not match the direct path, so a beamformer cannot always distinguish “wanted” speech from its reflected copies. Long reverberation can make words smear even when the direct voice is aimed at the beam.

Competing talkers
If another person speaks near the target, the two voices may occupy similar directions or overlap in time. A system that can steer one beam may still pass part of the second voice. Multiple beams can represent more than one direction, but that is not the same as perfectly isolating every talker.
Placement and coverage
Distance, furniture, ceiling height and the array’s orientation affect the signal-to-noise ratio before processing starts. A microphone mounted behind an obstruction or placed at the edge of its published coverage zone has less useful information to work with. Moving the array closer to the talker often helps more than increasing aggressive filtering.
Processing choices
Fast steering, strong noise suppression and automatic gain can improve intelligibility in one room and sound distracting in another. A conservative configuration may preserve natural tone but leave more background sound. Listen to the actual output in the intended room rather than assuming that a specification applies to every installation.
Beamforming versus Ambisonics
| Capture approach | Main goal | What happens to the audio | Key decisions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beamforming array | Emphasize a selected speaker or coverage area | Channels are delayed, weighted and filtered into a directional or enhanced speech output | Element count and geometry, steering behavior, room acoustics, number of talkers and downstream DSP |
| Spherical/Ambisonics microphone | Record the surrounding sound field for spatial reproduction | Capsule signals are encoded, then decoded and rendered by compatible software | Capsule arrangement, Ambisonics order and format, software support and playback workflow |
Calling an Ambisonics recording “a beam” is a category error. Ambisonics keeps directional information for later rendering; it is not primarily trying to reject every sound outside one look direction. Conversely, a conference beam output is not automatically a navigable 3D recording, because much of the directional detail may have been filtered or combined into speech-focused streams.

How Ambisonics microphones capture a sound field
Capsules arranged around a point
A spherical or tetrahedral design places matched capsules so that sound arriving from different directions produces distinct patterns across the channels. The Sennheiser AMBEO VR Mic is a concrete example: four capsules are arranged tetrahedrally.
A-format capture
That microphone’s capsules produce A-format signals. A-format is the direct set of capsule outputs, not the final representation most spatial playback tools expect.
Conversion to B-format
A converter transforms the A-format channels into B-format components used by Ambisonics workflows. The conversion accounts for the capsule arrangement and produces channels that describe the sound field in a form software can rotate, manipulate and decode.
Decode and render
Editing and playback require Ambisonics-compatible tools. The decoder can render the encoded field for headphones or loudspeakers and can change the listener’s orientation without rerecording the scene. If software does not understand the format, the recording may play as unrelated channels or a conventional mix rather than as intended immersive audio.

Product examples and what their numbers mean
Conference ceiling arrays
Shure describes its Microflex Advance arrays as combining beamforming with digital signal processing for conferencing and adjustable room coverage. In Shure’s description of the MXA920 and MXA925, each model uses more than 100 MEMS microphone elements to create up to eight discrete audio beams. That figure applies to those named models and is a manufacturer specification, not a typical or industry-wide count for every array microphone.
Sound-field recording
The four-capsule tetrahedral AMBEO VR Mic example serves a different purpose: producing A-format for conversion to B-format and later spatial decoding. It should not be treated as interchangeable with a ceiling array designed to deliver a clean speech feed.
Choosing the right type for your goal
For one talker at a desk
A conventional directional microphone may be simpler if the talker stays in one position and the room is controlled. A small beamforming array becomes useful when the talker moves, when the microphone must be placed away from the mouth, or when software needs to select a direction electronically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a meeting table or room
Look for documented coverage, steering behavior and integration with the room’s loudspeakers. Check whether the system produces one adaptive mix or several independent beams. Ceiling placement can free the table, but distance and reverberation become more important.
For several speakers who may move
Prioritize source tracking, multi-beam or multi-output support, and controls that let you inspect or route each beam. Confirm how the system behaves when two people speak simultaneously; a single-beam mode may favor only one voice.
For immersive music, games or virtual reality
Choose an Ambisonics-capable microphone and a complete format workflow. Verify the capsule arrangement, output format, required converter and decoder, and the playback software or engine before recording. A beamforming conference microphone is the wrong tool if the goal is to let a listener explore the sound field.
Installation and configuration checklist
- Define the output. Decide whether you need one intelligible speech channel, several directional channels or an immersive sound-field file.
- Map the room. Note talker positions, loudspeakers, reflective surfaces and likely noise sources. Keep the array within its documented coverage and orient it as specified.
- Select steering behavior. Use a fixed direction for a known seat; enable localization or adaptive steering when people move.
- Set downstream DSP deliberately. Configure echo cancellation, noise reduction and gain control separately from beamforming, and avoid stacking multiple automatic processors without monitoring their interaction.
- Test real speech. Walk through expected positions, speak over a second talker and play the room’s loudspeakers. Listen for words being clipped, pumping gain or a beam that jumps between sources.
- For Ambisonics, verify the format path. Record the required capsule channels, perform the documented A-format-to-B-format conversion, and check orientation and decoding in the intended playback system.
Troubleshooting common results
The voice is still quiet or distant
- Move the array closer or into a clearer line of sight; spatial processing cannot recover a severely weak direct signal.
- Confirm that the beam or coverage zone points toward the talker rather than a reflection.
- Check that automatic gain or a second processor is not reducing the signal after beamforming.
Background speech remains
- Determine whether the competing talker is close to the target direction; spatial separation may be insufficient.
- Try a narrower or fixed beam only if the target position is stable.
- Reduce room reflections and loudspeaker spill, which can make unwanted energy appear to come from many directions.
The output sounds metallic or words disappear
- Back off aggressive noise reduction or voice enhancement.
- Check for two echo cancellers or automatic gain stages operating in series.
- Compare the processed output with a raw or less-processed feed to identify which stage introduces the artifact.
An Ambisonics file does not sound spatial
- Confirm that A-format was converted to the B-format expected by the decoder.
- Use software that supports the recording’s Ambisonics order and channel layout.
- Check channel order and microphone orientation; a valid file with the wrong mapping can rotate or collapse the scene.
The practical takeaway
Spatial microphones capture multiple views of the same acoustic event and use their differences to make a directional decision or preserve a surrounding sound field. For speech, the chain is separate capsule signals, source-direction estimation, beamforming or spatial filtering, then any additional echo, noise or gain processing. For immersive recording, the chain is spatial capsules, format conversion and compatible decoding.
Choose beamforming when the priority is intelligible speech from a known area or moving talkers. Choose Ambisonics when the priority is retaining direction around the microphone for later immersive playback. In either case, geometry, room acoustics and the complete software path matter as much as the microphone’s marketing label.
