Starlink Direct to Cell lets a compatible LTE phone connect to specially equipped low-Earth-orbit satellites through a participating mobile carrier when ordinary cellular service is unavailable. For T-Mobile customers in the United States, the service is called T-Satellite: the connection is automatic, and you do not need a satellite dish, separate handset, or manual satellite setting. Your exact phone model and carrier plan still matter.
How does Starlink Direct to Cell work?
SpaceX equips some Starlink satellites to communicate directly with 4G LTE phones. Instead of reaching a terrestrial cell tower, a compatible phone can connect to a satellite overhead; SpaceX describes the satellites as functioning “essentially as cell towers in space.” The service is offered through mobile network operators, not as a phone connecting to a home Starlink terminal. In the United States, T-Mobile offers the service as T-Satellite through its Starlink partnership and network arrangements. The FCC has addressed these arrangements under its Supplemental Coverage from Space framework.
T-Mobile says a phone switches to satellite service automatically when terrestrial service is unavailable. The network name may appear as “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink.” Because satellites move, the handset may disconnect from one satellite and reconnect to another. Messages can be delayed while the phone retries in the background; this is a coverage extension, not a promise of uninterrupted or full-speed broadband.

A supported phone on a participating carrier
T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years work with T-Satellite, but that broad statement is not a guarantee for every model, software version, or carrier configuration. Check your exact device on T-Mobile’s current eligible-device list and confirm which features it supports.

No extra satellite equipment or manual setup
T-Mobile describes T-Satellite as connecting automatically, without changing settings. Its service description does not require a separate antenna, special case, customer Starlink terminal, or manual satellite selection for ordinary phone connectivity.
What can you do with T-Satellite?
T-Mobile currently lists SMS, MMS and RCS messaging, location sharing, selected satellite-ready apps, and WhatsApp calling over satellite. App support and capabilities depend on the carrier’s current service and supported-app list, so check T-Mobile’s service page rather than assuming any particular app or feature will work.

The service is designed for limited satellite capacity, including an optimized data approach for selected apps. T-Mobile warns that satellite availability, message-delivery delays, and location accuracy can affect the experience. Its page also notes that some texts to emergency services may reach a national response center rather than being routed directly to the local response center. Satellite messaging should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for voice emergency calling or a promise of immediate help.
Where is it available, and what does it cost?
T-Mobile’s current listed T-Satellite footprint includes the continental United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, parts of southern Alaska, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan. That is T-Mobile’s stated coverage, not a claim that Starlink Direct to Cell is available worldwide. Check the carrier’s live coverage map and terms before relying on service in a particular place.

On its current service page, T-Mobile says T-Satellite is included with Experience Beyond and Better Value plans. It also lists a limited-time option for other customers and non-customers at $10 per month per line. Plan eligibility and promotional pricing can change; verify the current terms directly with T-Mobile.

In February 2025, SpaceX announced commercial messaging in the United States and New Zealand for T-Mobile and One NZ customers, reporting that more than 400 Direct to Cell satellites had been launched at that time. That figure is a dated launch announcement, not a current constellation count. SpaceX’s announcement described IoT, data, and voice as capabilities it would work toward; it should not be read as proof those services were available then.

T-Mobile’s February 9, 2025 beta announcement described the early experience as text-only and presented picture messaging, data, and voice as future capabilities. The service page now lists additional features, including selected apps and WhatsApp calls, so the beta description is historical rather than a summary of the current offering.

Separately, SpaceX’s October 8, 2026 update describes a planned Starlink Mobile architecture combining satellite and terrestrial deployment and says final FCC approval is still to come. Those forward-looking plans are distinct from the T-Satellite features currently described by T-Mobile.
