Spacecraft navigate near small asteroids by combining radio tracking, images of surface landmarks, trajectory models, and onboard safety rules. For a landing or sample collection, the spacecraft can compare live images with a prepared map, update its predicted contact point, and abort the descent if that point falls in hazardous terrain. The process reduces risk; it cannot eliminate it.
Why a small asteroid is hard to approach
A small asteroid is not necessarily an easy navigation target. Its weak gravity makes its pull difficult to measure and means other forces, including pressure from sunlight, can matter more to the spacecraft’s motion. Meanwhile, boulders and steep slopes can leave only small patches suitable for a close approach.
The spacecraft’s position, its velocity, the asteroid’s shape, and the effects of maneuvers all have uncertainty. Navigation teams repeatedly update their estimates as new measurements arrive rather than relying on a single map or trajectory calculation. NASA describes these challenges in its account of OSIRIS-REx optical navigation and trajectory modeling.
How spacecraft navigation works near an asteroid
1. Map the target
Reconnaissance images and range measurements help teams model the asteroid’s shape and identify recognizable features. For a sampling mission, the team can use images taken from different angles and under different lighting, along with laser-altimeter data, to build three-dimensional terrain and hazard maps.

For Bennu, OSIRIS-REx’s team cataloged candidate-site features such as boulders and craters. Those features gave the spacecraft identifiable landmarks to look for during its descent. NASA explains the mapping and feature catalog in its account of Bennu’s boulders and OSIRIS-REx.
2. Estimate where the spacecraft is
Radio tracking from Earth contributes information about the spacecraft’s location and velocity. As it approaches, optical navigation supplies local context: software analyzes visible landmarks in camera images and compares them with the modeled target. The differences help estimate the spacecraft’s trajectory relative to the asteroid.
A camera image by itself is not a navigation solution. The image has to be interpreted against a catalog or model and combined with trajectory estimates and knowledge of maneuvers already performed.

3. Predict the path and update it
Navigation teams use the latest estimated position and velocity to predict the spacecraft’s future path, accounting for gravity, planned maneuvers, and other forces. Because small-body gravity is weak, solar radiation pressure can have a comparatively important effect. Uncertainty in maneuver execution also matters, so teams refine the estimate as they receive more observations.
4. Compare the approach with terrain hazards
During a descent, onboard optical navigation can compare live images with a stored image catalog. OSIRIS-REx’s Natural Feature Tracking (NFT) used that comparison to estimate the spacecraft’s position relative to known landmarks and update its predicted contact point, helping guide approach maneuvers.
The predicted contact point could then be checked against a hazard map. If the projected path led to unsafe terrain, OSIRIS-REx could autonomously wave off and back away. NASA describes the system and the mapped hazards in its overview of the Bennu site maps.

OSIRIS-REx at Bennu: a sample descent with a safety escape
Bennu is about 492 meters across. When OSIRIS-REx arrived, NASA described it as the first spacecraft to orbit an object that small. The surface proved rugged, and the safe areas were smaller than the original concept for the sampling site had anticipated.

NASA’s 2020 account put the original safe-target concept at 50 meters across and the largest safe area identified at 16 meters. The selected Nightingale site was about 16 meters across, surrounded by large boulders. That comparison illustrates the precision challenge for this mission, not a universal specification for asteroid sampling. See NASA’s site and hazard-map account and its Bennu arrival release.
For the descent, the spacecraft carried a high-resolution catalog of the candidate site. NFT compared its current camera view with the catalog and updated the predicted contact location. The hazard check could initiate a wave-off if the projected contact was unsafe.

Earth could not steer the spacecraft through each moment of the operation. During the Touch-and-Go (TAG) sequence, Bennu and OSIRIS-REx were about 334 million kilometers from Earth, and a signal took about 18.5 minutes to travel one way. NASA reported that the roughly 4.5-hour sequence was uploaded in advance, ran autonomously within predefined trajectory limits, and sent telemetry to the ground. The spacecraft had an abort capability rather than waiting for a real-time command from Earth. NASA describes the sequence and communications delay in its TAG countdown account.

Autonomy means a spacecraft can use onboard measurements and rules to carry out decisions without waiting for a ground command. It does not mean the craft has unlimited freedom: the operation can be planned and uploaded in advance, constrained by predefined limits, monitored through telemetry, and equipped with an abort response.

NASA describes DART’s different objective in its SMART Nav overview. A system designed to guide an impact should not be confused with one designed to select a safe touchdown point.

What image-navigation software can—and cannot—do
NASA’s Goddard Image Analysis and Navigation Tool (GIANT) analyzes images from cameras, lidar, and other sensors. NASA says it can support distance estimates and three-dimensional maps of potential landing areas and hazards, as well as estimates of the mass and center of a rotating object. NASA reported an open-source release and development of celestial-navigation capabilities in its GIANT technology overview.
That reported software availability does not establish that GIANT is a supported, certified, turnkey flight system for any mission. Like other navigation tools, its use depends on the spacecraft, sensors, target, and mission design.

What “safe navigation” means in practice
- Several information sources work together. Radio tracking, optical landmarks, terrain maps, and trajectory models address different parts of the problem.
- Close operations require local observations. Images can provide information about position relative to surface features that radio tracking alone does not supply at the needed local precision.
- Autonomy is bounded. A spacecraft can execute a preplanned sequence and respond to onboard measurements, while following limits set by mission teams.
- An abort is a safety measure, not a guarantee. Hazard maps and wave-off logic can reduce exposure to known hazards, but they do not remove all uncertainty or risk.
