NASA’s AVATAR experiment sent living-cell bone marrow models on Artemis II to study how spaceflight stressors such as microgravity and radiation affect human tissue. NASA says the chips have returned and are being analyzed. They are research devices—not tiny transplantable organs—and any benefits for astronaut care or medicine on Earth remain potential applications, not established outcomes.
What are organ chips?
Organ chips are small devices containing living human cells arranged to mimic selected functions of tissue or an organ. Researchers use them to observe how cells respond to conditions or treatments, including environmental exposures, medications, and chemotherapy. A chip is a laboratory model, not a complete organ and not something that can be implanted in a person. NASA’s overview of organ chips explains their role in research.
These models let researchers examine human cells in a controlled system, but results from a chip do not by themselves establish how a whole person will respond. Organ chips are models that must be evaluated for the particular research question; they do not replace clinical evidence or other research methods.
What are the mini organs going to space?
The experiment is AVATAR, short for A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response. NASA describes it as an investigation of deep-space stressors using organ-on-a-chip devices containing bone-marrow tissue developed from astronaut volunteers’ cells. The model used bone-marrow-derived cells along with blood-vessel and supporting cells. NASA’s Artemis II AVATAR project page describes the investigation and its collaborators.

Bone marrow is a useful tissue to study because it produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Examining it may help researchers investigate immune responses and changes in blood-cell formation under spaceflight conditions. NASA says the automated Orion hardware was developed by Space Tango, and Emulate organ chips were used. The project involved NASA, BARDA, NCATS, Space Tango, Emulate, and Wyss Institute scientists.
What happens to the chips after flight?
NASA’s current project account says the chips returned from the Artemis II flight and are being analyzed. Researchers are comparing flight samples with ground-control chips and astronauts’ blood samples collected before and after flight. NASA describes planned single-cell RNA sequencing, a method for measuring gene activity in individual cells. The cited NASA pages do not yet report final AVATAR results. This comparison is intended to help separate changes associated with the flight environment from other differences. The analysis is still a research stage: until results are reported and evaluated, it is not possible to say what the chips revealed or whether those findings will lead to a practical intervention.

Spaceflight exposes crews to conditions including microgravity and radiation. AVATAR lets researchers investigate how tissue from individual astronauts responds in a cell model, rather than relying only on generalized assumptions about human biology. NASA says findings could eventually inform countermeasures, preventive treatments, or personalized medical kits for missions where access to clinical care is limited.

That is a possible future use, not a change to current astronaut care. The current NASA account says analysis is underway; it does not establish that AVATAR has produced a countermeasure, treatment, or operational medical kit.

NASA identifies safer or faster drug testing, personalized medicine, and disease-treatment research as possible applications of organ-chip work. A chip can provide a model for observing cell responses to treatments or environmental factors, but a promising result in a model still needs appropriate validation before it can support a clinical conclusion. AVATAR has not been shown in the cited sources to have produced a treatment or improved patient outcomes.

Other NASA research offers context without being evidence about AVATAR itself. In a February 2025 overview, NASA said engineered heart tissues exposed to weightlessness behaved in a way similar to aging on Earth, a separate line of work that may help researchers investigate cardiac function and future protective strategies. NASA also reported in June 2026 on cartilage-cell research in orbit, noting that manufacturing cartilage tissue in space could potentially inform future implants on Earth. These examples illustrate research possibilities; neither is a result from AVATAR’s bone-marrow chips.

What the experiment can—and cannot—tell us
- What it is: NASA’s investigation of astronaut-derived bone-marrow organ chips and deep-space stressors.
- What is known about status: NASA says the chips returned from Artemis II and are being analyzed against ground controls and astronaut blood samples.
- What remains unknown: The cited NASA pages do not provide final findings or demonstrate a resulting treatment or patient benefit.
- How to interpret a future result: A finding in a living-cell model could guide further research, but its meaning depends on how well the model is validated for the question and whether later studies support it.
