Researchers at EPFL have demonstrated tiny robots that use sound to generate their own thrust, without onboard batteries or motors. Their resonant cavities turn sound at selected frequencies into directional air jets. The work includes miniature boats controlled by audible tones and microfliers driven by ultrasound; it is a laboratory demonstration, not a consumer-ready robot.
How can sound make a tiny robot move?
The devices use hollow cavities designed around Helmholtz resonance—the same acoustic effect that produces a tone when someone blows across a bottle opening. At a cavity’s resonant frequency, the air inside oscillates strongly. In EPFL’s design, that motion creates a concentrated jet of air leaving the cavity, while incoming air is more diffuse. The imbalance generates thrust.
This is different from using sound waves simply to push or levitate a passive object: the resonator converts sound into the device’s own propulsive force. Each cavity can be tuned to respond to a particular frequency, so selecting a tone can activate a chosen direction of thrust. EPFL’s announcement describes the principle and demonstrations.

The boats and microfliers are distinct prototypes, with different forms of actuation. EPFL reports that boats operated with audible frequencies, while the microfliers used ultrasound, which humans cannot hear.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Demonstration | Sound and actuation | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Miniature boats | Audible frequencies selectively activate up to three cavities, each tuned and oriented to push in a particular direction. | Centimeter-scale boats moved, steered around obstacles, and followed programmed autonomous navigation. No speed or distance measurement is stated in EPFL’s announcement. |
| Direct-thrust microflier | Ultrasound drives cavities that produce upward thrust. | One microflier weighed 150 micrograms, according to EPFL’s 2026 announcement. |
| Blade-driven microflier | Ultrasound drives resonant cavities coupled to tiny blades. | A separate design reached blade speeds of up to 13,000 revolutions per minute, with lift described by EPFL as stable and helicopter-like. |
The 150-microgram weight and the 13,000-rpm blade speed belong to different microflier designs; they are not combined specifications for one vehicle. The EPFL report identifies the boat and microflier demonstrations.
What does “without batteries or motors” mean here?
The reported propulsion comes from resonant cavities responding to sound, rather than from an onboard battery-and-motor system. The sound source supplies the energy: for the boats, a speaker changes frequency to activate selected cavities. The work therefore demonstrates a way to propel very small devices without carrying a conventional motor and battery; it does not show that the robots operate without an external sound source.

The distinction matters especially when considering the boats’ programmed navigation. EPFL reports that the boats navigated autonomously, but the announcement describes frequency selection by a speaker as the means of activating cavities. It does not establish that the prototypes carried onboard power or control systems for independent operation.

How are the resonators made?
EPFL says the resonators can be made from common 3D-printing plastics, rubber-like polymers, and glass. For the microfliers, the team used 3D nanoprinting to integrate microscopic cavities into the polymer structures. That fabrication detail does not mean an ordinary consumer 3D printer can produce the demonstrated microfliers: the announcement specifically describes nanoprinting for their microscopic structures. EPFL’s report also discusses flexible devices with multiple sound-responsive structures as a possible future direction, not a demonstrated application.

What has not been established yet?
The reported work shows laboratory prototypes and a peer-reviewed study, but it does not establish that these devices are ready for practical deployment. EPFL’s announcement does not provide measured flight duration, travel range, payload capacity, required sound intensity, environmental operating limits, safety analysis, manufacturing yield, or cost. Without those details, claims that the prototypes can already carry out medical, environmental, or industrial missions would go beyond the evidence.
The underlying study is Junsun Hwang, Q. Angéloz, A. S. Murugan, H. Lissek, and M. S. Sakar, “Acoustic resonators as wireless actuators in air for small-scale robots,” Science Advances 12, issue 33 (2026), DOI 10.1126/sciadv.aef5620. The EPFL MICROBS publications listing identifies the paper.
