Short answer: Solana stores an SPL-token balance in a separate token-account record tied to one mint and one owner, usually the wallet’s deterministic associated token account (ATA). Ethereum stores an ERC-20 balance inside the token contract’s address-to-integer mapping and exposes it with balanceOf(address). The token identifier, account discovery, storage funding, transfer calls and indexing workflow therefore differ even though both systems represent amounts as integer base units plus token-specific decimals.
The core difference at a glance
On Solana, the wallet address is not the container for an SPL-token balance. A mint account identifies the token, and one or more token accounts hold units of that mint for an owner. On Ethereum, the token contract address identifies the token and the contract stores each holder’s balance in its own mapping. A holder does not create a separate ERC-20 token-account address through the standard interface.

How Solana stores an SPL-token balance
The mint identifies the asset
An SPL token starts with a mint account. The mint address is the identifier applications use to distinguish that token from every other token. The mint stores global information, including the token’s declared decimal precision and relevant authorities. The Token Program owns the state and instruction logic used for SPL tokens.

A token account is the balance record
Solana documentation describes the relationship directly: “A token account stores tokens for one mint and one token account owner on Solana.” Its important fields are the mint address, the token-account owner and the amount held. Because a token account is scoped to one mint, it cannot simultaneously contain units of two different SPL tokens.
Token instructions operate on these records. A transfer names a source token account and a destination token account for the same mint. Delegation, freezing, thawing, burning and closing are likewise token-account operations rather than operations on the wallet’s ordinary address.
Why wallets normally use an associated token account
An owner can have more than one token account for the same mint. To give wallets and applications a predictable default, Solana uses an associated token account. An ATA is the conventional default token account for a wallet-and-mint pair. Its address is derived deterministically from the wallet address, the token-program address and the mint address, so software can calculate or query the expected account without asking the user to paste an arbitrary token-account address.
“Default” does not mean “the only possible account.” A wallet may still own additional token accounts for that mint, for example when a program or user creates another account directly. A wallet interface that wants a complete token total must therefore distinguish the ATA from the broader set of token accounts owned by the wallet.
Creation and refundable storage funding
Creating an ATA or another token account requires funding the account with a refundable minimum storage balance. That balance is held in lamports, Solana’s native unit for account funding. The requirement is part of the token-account lifecycle: the application creating an account must arrange the funding, and the user experience may need to explain why an account-creation transaction requires additional lamports beyond the token transfer itself.
When a token account is empty, it can be closed. The account’s lamports, including the storage balance, are sent to the specified close destination. Closing is therefore both a cleanup operation and a way to recover the refundable storage funding. An account that still contains tokens cannot be treated as an empty account for this purpose.
What “one wallet balance” means on Solana
For a particular mint, the wallet owner is the common link between potentially several token-account records. To display a wallet-level total, software generally has to find the owner’s token accounts for that mint and combine their integer amounts. If the application is only showing the conventional default location, it can use the ATA; if it promises a complete balance, it must account for additional token accounts as well.

This distinction explains why a Solana explorer or wallet may show both an owner address and a token-account address. The owner identifies who controls the account, while the token-account address identifies the specific record in which that mint’s units are stored.

How Ethereum stores an ERC-20 balance
The contract address identifies the token
ERC-20 is a contract interface. A smart contract that implements the required methods and events can be called an ERC-20 token contract. The contract address is the token identifier used in every read and write: two contracts can both represent tokens with the same symbol while remaining different assets because their addresses differ.
The standard interface includes balanceOf(address), decimals(), totalSupply(), transfer, transferFrom, approve and allowance, along with Transfer and Approval events.
The mapping holds the per-address value
A conventional implementation stores balances in contract storage with a mapping such as mapping(address => uint256) _balances. The contract’s balanceOf(account) function returns the mapping value for the supplied holder address. Ethereum.org’s annotated ERC-20 example summarizes the structure as a mapping of addresses to their respective balances of that token.
The lookup therefore needs two pieces of context: the token contract address and the holder address passed to balanceOf. Changing either one changes the question being asked. Calling the same holder address against two different token contracts reads two different balances.
There is no standard ERC-20 equivalent of an ATA
The ERC-20 standard does not define a separate user-created token-account address analogous to a Solana ATA. The holder is represented as an address key in the contract’s mapping. A wallet application can query many token contracts for the same holder address, but it does not have to discover a distinct balance account for each contract through the ERC-20 interface.
This does not mean every ERC-20 implementation has identical internal storage. The standard specifies the public behavior, while a contract may organize its private storage differently. The commonly used mapping model explains the standard balance lookup, but applications should rely on the contract’s interface rather than assuming an exposed storage layout.
How to read a balance correctly on each chain
Solana procedure
- Identify the mint. Start with the mint account address, not merely a token name or symbol.
- Identify the owner wallet. Use the wallet address whose holdings you want to display.
- Find the ATA. Derive or query the associated token account for that wallet, token program and mint.
- Check for additional token accounts. If the product promises a complete wallet balance, enumerate other token accounts owned by the wallet for the same mint.
- Read each amount as an integer base-unit value. Do not convert to a decimal display value until the mint’s declared decimals are known.
- Aggregate when appropriate. Add the relevant token-account amounts to present a wallet-level total; keep the individual account addresses available when transfers or account management require them.
A transfer follows the same model in reverse: the instruction identifies token accounts and the mint’s token program, rather than passing only a wallet address and token symbol.

- Identify the ERC-20 contract. The contract address is part of the asset identity.
- Provide the holder address. This is the address used as the mapping key.
- Call
balanceOf(holder). The returned integer is the contract’s balance for that holder. - Read
decimals(). Use the contract’s declared precision for presentation. - Format only at the display boundary. Preserve the integer value internally and convert it for the user interface using the token-specific decimal count.
ERC-20 transfers target the token contract and use holder addresses in the method arguments. Allowances and delegated transfers add the approved spender and related method calls, but they do not create a separate token-account address for the holder.

Decimals and integer units: the part both systems share
Neither system should be treated as storing a floating-point balance. Token amounts are integer base units. Decimals metadata tells a client how to place the decimal separator for display; it does not change the underlying integer.
For an amount N and a declared decimal count d, a user-facing value is conventionally formatted as N ÷ 10d. The exact formatting is application policy, but the integer must remain authoritative. Solana clients obtain d from mint metadata, while ERC-20 clients obtain it from decimals().
- Never assume every Ethereum token uses 18 decimals.
- Never assume two Solana mints with similar names use the same precision.
- Store and calculate with integer-safe types; convert to a decimal string only when rendering a value.
- Keep the mint or contract address alongside the amount so a number cannot be mistaken for a balance of another token.
Transfers, approvals and account lifecycle
Solana transfer context
A Solana transfer moves units between token accounts associated with the same mint. The instruction must identify the source account, destination account and the token program context. If the recipient does not yet have the expected ATA, the transaction flow may need to create it and fund its refundable storage balance before the transfer can be completed.

Other token operations use the same account-oriented model. A delegate is associated with token-account permissions, and freeze, thaw, burn and close instructions act on token-account records. Account closure has a specific precondition: the account must be empty, after which its lamports can be redirected to the close destination.
ERC-20 transfer context
An ERC-20 transfer calls the token contract. A direct transfer changes the balances associated with the sender and recipient addresses in that contract’s accounting. A delegated flow uses approve, allowance and transferFrom. The corresponding Transfer and Approval events provide standardized signals that indexers can observe.
Because the balance is contract storage, there is no normal ERC-20 step in which a user creates, funds or closes a token-account record. Contract-specific administrative functions may exist outside the standard, but they should not be confused with a standard ERC-20 account lifecycle.
What the difference means for wallets
Solana wallet design
A Solana wallet needs token-account awareness. It commonly derives or queries ATAs, reads the mint and owner fields, and may enumerate additional token accounts for the same mint. Sending to a new recipient can involve an account-creation step and its refundable storage funding. Display code should make clear whether it is showing the ATA amount or an aggregate across all token accounts owned by the wallet.

Cleanup is also visible to the user. Empty, obsolete token accounts can be closed to recover their lamports, but closing the wrong account or attempting to close a nonempty account is not a substitute for transferring or burning its tokens first.

Ethereum wallet design
An Ethereum wallet associates a holder address with a list of ERC-20 contract addresses. For each contract, it calls balanceOf and reads decimals() before formatting the result. The wallet does not derive an ATA-like address for each asset. Its main discovery problem is identifying which token contracts to query, while keeping each result tied to the correct contract address.
Indexing and data-model implications
Solana indexers
A Solana indexer must model token-account records explicitly. At minimum, each record needs the token-account address, mint, owner and integer amount. To answer “what is this wallet’s balance of this mint?” it filters by both owner and mint, distinguishes the ATA from other accounts when needed, and aggregates the applicable records for a wallet-level view.
Indexing transfers alone is not enough to remove the account dimension from the data model. The account itself is the state container that instructions read and update, and account creation and closure change which records should be considered active.
Ethereum indexers
An ERC-20 indexer keys balances by token contract and holder address. It can read contract storage through the contract interface or reconstruct balances from standardized Transfer events, while retaining the contract address as part of every record. A holder’s address by itself is not a complete key because the same holder can have a different balance in every ERC-20 contract.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking a Solana wallet address for its token balance
Symptom: An application queries the wallet address as though it directly contained SPL-token units.
Fix: Resolve the mint-specific token account, normally the ATA, then decide whether additional token accounts must be included.
Assuming one Solana account per token
Symptom: A wallet display ignores tokens held in a second account for the same mint.
Fix: Treat the ATA as the deterministic default, not a uniqueness guarantee. Enumerate and aggregate other owner-and-mint records when the product’s definition of balance requires it.

Ignoring ATA storage funding
Symptom: A transfer flow fails or surprises the user because the recipient lacks a token account and the transaction needs extra lamports.
Fix: Make account creation and its refundable minimum storage balance an explicit part of transaction preparation and user messaging.
Trying to close a nonempty Solana token account
Symptom: Cleanup is rejected because the account still holds units.

Calling the wrong Ethereum contract
Symptom: The holder address is correct but the displayed amount is zero or belongs to another asset.
Fix: Verify the token contract address before calling balanceOf. Names and symbols are not substitutes for the contract address.
Hard-coding decimal precision
Symptom: A raw integer is displayed with a misplaced decimal point.
Fix: Read mint decimals on Solana or call decimals() on Ethereum, preserve the raw integer internally and format only with the declared value.
Choosing the right mental model
Use a mint-plus-accounts model when designing for Solana: the mint names the asset, each token account stores one owner’s units for that mint, the ATA is the deterministic default, and account creation or closure affects storage funding. Use a contract-plus-mapping model for ERC-20: the contract names the asset, the holder address is the mapping key, and balanceOf returns the value for that key.
The shared rule is to keep amounts as integers and obtain decimals from on-chain metadata. The operational rule that differs is where software looks first: a Solana application discovers token-account records, while an Ethereum application calls the appropriate token contract for the holder address.
