Solana DeFi is built from three related but distinct activities: liquidity pools hold token reserves for trading, swaps exchange one asset for another through a route, and lending markets let users supply collateral or assets to borrow. Solana programs share a global state and can call one another inside a single atomic transaction, so an application can coordinate several DeFi actions without requiring separate off-chain steps. Atomic execution only means the combined transaction succeeds or fails as a unit; it does not guarantee a favorable price, profitable trade, or risk-free protocol.

The three building blocks at a glance

DeFi function What the user does What determines the result
Liquidity pool Deposits assets into a shared reserve or trades against that reserve Pool design, available liquidity at the intended trade size, fees, and price impact
Swap Exchanges one token for another Selected route, quoted output, pool liquidity, price impact, and transaction-level fees
Lending market Supplies assets, posts collateral, borrows, repays, or withdraws Supported assets, collateral rules, borrow availability, interest rates, and liquidation parameters

These functions can appear in one user experience, but they do not share identical rules. A pool is a source of trading liquidity; a router searches among sources; a lending market manages debt and collateral. Check the current documentation for the specific market or pool before committing funds.

Why Solana’s shared state matters

Solana’s developer documentation describes the network as a single global state in which programs can compose through cross-program invocations. A transaction submitted by an application can therefore invoke more than one program and pass the resulting state changes through the same execution path.

For a DeFi user, composition can mean coordinating a token swap with another action rather than signing an unrelated series of off-chain instructions. The transaction is atomic: if one required instruction fails, the combined transaction does not partially complete. This property reduces the risk of being left with only the first leg of a planned operation, but it cannot protect against an unfavorable quote, market movement, faulty parameters, malicious code, or a liquidation event.

How liquidity pools work

Reserves provide the counterparty

A liquidity pool holds reserves of the assets that traders want to exchange. Instead of matching every buyer with a particular seller, an automated market maker (AMM) allows a trade against the pool according to that pool’s pricing rule. The pool’s reserves and its rule determine how much of the requested output is available for a given input.

Liquidity is not an abstract network-wide number. A pool can have ample liquidity for a small trade and still produce substantial price impact for a large one. Compare the amount available at the size you intend to trade, not just the pool’s headline balance or the number of tokens displayed by an interface.

Concentrated-liquidity pools

Concentrated-liquidity designs let liquidity providers allocate funds within selected price ranges rather than across every possible price. This can make liquidity more targeted around the prices a market is using, while making the position’s behavior dependent on whether the market remains in its chosen range.

Orca’s official disclosure says its router evaluates liquidity across Orca concentrated-liquidity market-maker (CLMM) pools and estimates price impact using the AMM formula. The disclosure does not establish a universal formula, fee schedule, or profitability result for liquidity providers. Those details are pool-specific and should be checked in the current documentation for the position you are considering.

What liquidity providers should examine

  • Pool design: Determine whether the pool uses a broad-range or concentrated-liquidity model and how a position is managed when prices move.
  • Trade-size liquidity: Inspect the expected output and price impact for your actual order size.
  • Fees: Identify the fee charged by the pool or route and whether additional transaction-level charges apply.
  • Position mechanics: Understand how deposits, withdrawals, range selection, and any required rebalancing work in that protocol’s interface.
  • Market risk: Token prices can move independently, and pool participation does not guarantee a return.

How a Solana swap reaches execution

A swap is an exchange of one token for another. The interface may use a single pool, a protocol-native router, or an aggregator that evaluates several venues. Solana’s official ecosystem overview lists Jupiter Swap API for routing across Solana liquidity, while Orca describes a router that evaluates its own CLMM pools.

Step-by-step swap workflow

  1. Connect a self-custodial wallet. Confirm that the wallet controls the account that will sign the transaction and that you are using the protocol’s genuine interface.
  2. Choose the input and output tokens. Verify token names, symbols, and mint addresses where the interface exposes them. Similar symbols can represent different assets.
  3. Enter the trade size. A larger order can consume more available liquidity and create greater price impact than a smaller order.
  4. Review the quote. Check the expected output, route, estimated price impact, pool or venue selection, and all displayed fees. A quote is time-sensitive; it can change before execution.
  5. Set transaction limits consciously. Use the interface’s slippage or minimum-output controls according to your tolerance. A setting that is too tight may fail during movement; one that is too loose can accept a materially worse result.
  6. Simulate and sign if supported. Read the wallet request, confirm the programs and token amounts, and reject requests that do not match the intended action.
  7. Verify the result. After confirmation, check the destination balance and transaction record rather than assuming that a submitted request completed as expected.

Why the best route changes

An aggregator can compare available liquidity and split or sequence a trade across venues when that produces a better quoted result. A protocol-native router may search only its own pools. The route that appears best is therefore transaction- and time-specific: token pair, order size, pool balances, current prices, price impact, and fees all matter. No source in this overview establishes a permanent fee ranking or a live head-to-head quote.

How lending markets work

Lending is separate from swapping. In a lending market, users supply assets to reserves and may receive a claim representing their supplied balance. A borrower generally supplies collateral, borrows an available asset, and remains responsible for repaying under that market’s rules.

Step-by-step lending workflow

  1. Select a market and asset. Confirm that the asset is supported for supply, collateral, or borrowing; a token can be available for one role but not another.
  2. Supply assets or collateral. Read the transaction details and verify the amount. Supplying does not by itself mean that borrowing capacity is available.
  3. Review borrowing conditions. Check the market’s current interest rate, available liquidity, collateral requirements, and any distinction between stable and variable terms if offered.
  4. Borrow conservatively. Leave a buffer below the market’s liquidation boundary rather than treating the maximum displayed capacity as a target.
  5. Monitor the position. Asset prices, interest, and reserve conditions can change. A falling collateral value or rising debt can reduce the safety margin.
  6. Repay before withdrawing collateral. A position normally must satisfy the market’s debt rules before collateral can be removed. Confirm the remaining debt and accrued interest in the interface.

Solana’s official overview names Kamino, Jupiter Lend, and Save as lending integrations. Their supported assets, rates, collateral factors, liquidation thresholds, and availability can differ and can change over time. Solana’s official overview does not establish common values for those parameters, so use each market’s current documentation before quoting or relying on them.

Combining pools, swaps, and lending in one transaction

Shared state and cross-program invocations make composability possible. For example, an application could coordinate a swap with a subsequent DeFi instruction in one atomic transaction when the involved programs and interface support that flow. The user should still inspect every instruction: atomicity prevents a partial success, not a bad economic outcome.

Composition also means that a failure can originate in any leg. An insufficient output amount, unavailable lending liquidity, a stale account state, or a program-level error can cause the entire transaction to fail. Recheck the quote and account balances after a failed attempt instead of blindly resubmitting the same parameters.

High volume, stablecoin balances, compute capacity, or transaction-size limits do not establish that a particular pool is solvent, a contract is secure, or a trade will be profitable.

Risk checklist before you sign

  • Contract and interface risk: Verify the application and wallet request. A legitimate-looking page can still request an unintended instruction.
  • Price impact: Compare the quoted output with the input size and consider whether splitting the trade would materially change execution.
  • Liquidity risk: A pool or lending reserve may not have enough depth when you need to exit or borrow.
  • Collateral risk: Borrowing can lead to liquidation if market conditions breach the market’s rules.
  • Parameter risk: Rates, supported assets, thresholds, and available liquidity can change; treat displayed values as current-state information, not permanent guarantees.
  • Operational risk: Keep recovery information private, test unfamiliar workflows with a small amount, and confirm every token address and amount before signing.

Wallets and signing devices

Orca’s disclosure describes its interface as non-custodial and says users execute transactions through self-custodial wallets. It lists Ledger among wallet examples that can connect to the interface. A hardware wallet can keep signing keys on a separate device, but it does not prevent smart-contract bugs, market losses, phishing, unfavorable execution, or lending liquidation. Check current device compatibility for the wallet and workflow you intend to use; no particular device is required by the general Solana DeFi model.

A practical decision process

  1. Define the action: Decide whether you need an exchange, liquidity exposure, a loan, or a composed sequence.
  2. Shortlist by function: Compare pools for pool design and trade-size liquidity, routers for route and quote quality, and lending markets for collateral and debt terms.
  3. Read live parameters: Record the displayed output, price impact, fees, rates, available liquidity, and liquidation conditions at the time of use.
  4. Limit exposure: Start with an amount whose loss or liquidation would not compromise essential funds.
  5. Inspect the transaction: Confirm programs, token accounts, amounts, and minimum-output or collateral settings in the wallet.
  6. Reconcile afterward: Check balances, debt, supplied collateral, and the confirmed transaction record before taking the next action.
