SmartThings is the app and platform, Matter is the device-communication standard, and a compatible hub normally supplies the controller that manages Matter devices. Your phone can commission (add) a Matter product during setup, but it is not the controller in SmartThings’ documented flow. The network transport then determines the remaining hardware: Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet uses the home IP network, while Matter over Thread also needs access to a Thread Border Router.
The four layers you are connecting
Smart-home compatibility is easier to understand when the system is separated into layers. A single product can involve all four.
1. The device
This is the endpoint you want to operate: a light, plug, sensor, lock, thermostat, appliance, or another supported category. A Matter badge identifies the standard used to communicate with it; it does not, by itself, prove that every SmartThings feature or device function is available.
2. The network transport
Matter can use Wi-Fi, Ethernet/IP, or Thread. Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices join the existing local IP network. Thread is a separate, low-power mesh network. A Thread Border Router connects that mesh to the home’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet network so the controller can reach Thread devices.

3. Commissioner and controller
During onboarding, a commissioner transfers the device’s credentials and configuration to a Matter controller. SmartThings documents its mobile app as the commissioner: you scan a QR code or enter a setup code in the app. A supported hub then acts as the controller that manages the device after commissioning.
4. SmartThings platform and integrations
The SmartThings service and app provide rooms, automations, scenes, notifications, and controls. Hub-connected integrations use Edge drivers to translate protocols such as Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, Zigbee, and Z-Wave into SmartThings capabilities. SmartThings developer documentation says these hub-connected integrations can run locally on the hub, which can improve response speed, reliability, and available functionality for that integration.
Do you need a SmartThings hub?
For Matter in SmartThings, plan on a compatible controller hub unless the exact product and SmartThings documentation explicitly describe another supported arrangement. SmartThings’ Matter partner guidance states that Matter devices must connect to a compatible hub. Compatible options include standalone SmartThings hubs and hubs integrated into some Samsung products, but the supported model, firmware, device category, and regional features can change.
The phone’s role causes much of the confusion. It can perform commissioning, but closing the app does not turn the phone into the permanent Matter controller. After setup, the supported controller and its network connections are responsible for ongoing control and automations.
You do not automatically need to buy a separate Thread Border Router. You need one only when the Matter device uses Thread and no compatible hub or other home device already supplies that function. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi device has no Thread requirement.

Choose the transport before choosing hardware
| Device connection | Network it uses | Additional requirement | Typical planning question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi | Existing Wi-Fi and local IP network | Compatible Matter controller hub | Does my hub support this device category and firmware? |
| Matter over Ethernet | Wired Ethernet/IP network | Compatible Matter controller hub on the same reachable network | Can the controller reach the wired segment? |
| Matter over Thread | Thread low-power mesh | Compatible Matter controller plus a Thread Border Router | Does an existing hub or another device already provide the border-router function? |
Look at the device specifications or packaging for the transport, not just the Matter logo. Two products in the same category can have different requirements because one uses Wi-Fi and the other uses Thread.
What to verify before buying or installing
- Exact controller model: Confirm that the hub supports Matter and the product’s category. SmartThings documentation names Aeotec Smart Home Hub and SmartThings Hub 2018 among controller examples.
- Thread capability: If the device is Matter over Thread, identify the Thread Border Router you will use. It may be integrated into a compatible hub or supplied by another device in the home.
- Other protocols: If you also use Zigbee or Z-Wave products, check that the chosen hub includes the radios and SmartThings support those products require.
- Software versions: Check hub firmware, the SmartThings mobile-app version, and the device firmware. Matter support evolves through software updates.
- Region and category: Supported models, device categories, and functions can differ by country. Verify the exact regional listing rather than relying on a generic Matter statement.
- Shared-platform functions: If you intend to use the device in more than one ecosystem, confirm that the functions you need are exposed through Matter in each platform.
How to add a Matter device to SmartThings
The labels and minimum versions can change, so use the current SmartThings support instructions for your model. The documented flow is:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Put the controller online. Make sure the compatible SmartThings hub is powered, connected to your network, and visible in the SmartThings app. For a Thread product, make sure the required border-router path is available.
- Prepare the device. Power it on and place it in its factory-pairing state according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the Matter QR code or numeric setup code accessible.
- Open the SmartThings app. Choose Add device and select the Matter onboarding option.
- Scan or enter the code. Scan the Matter QR code, or enter the setup code manually if the camera cannot read it.
- Follow the network prompt. The app may ask you to select the appropriate Wi-Fi or Thread network. Use the network that can reach the controller and, for Thread, the border router.
- Select the hub and room. Choose the compatible hub that will control the device, then assign the device to a SmartThings room.
- Wait for commissioning to finish. Keep the phone near the device and avoid resetting either device while credentials are being transferred.
- Test the actual functions. Turn the device on and off, inspect sensor readings or lock controls, and create a small automation. A successful pairing does not guarantee that every vendor-specific feature appears in SmartThings.
If the app cannot find a controller, first check that the hub is online and that the phone is connected to the intended home network. If commissioning fails after the code is accepted, reset the device only according to its instructions and begin again; do not assume that deleting the app alone resets Matter credentials.
Thread Border Routers: what they do and when they matter
A Thread Border Router is a network function, not simply a marketing label. It joins the Thread mesh to the local IP network, allowing Matter control traffic to reach Thread endpoints. One can be built into a hub or another compatible home device, or provided as separate hardware.
SmartThings’ older compatibility details give a useful example: the SmartThings 2015 Hub can control Matter devices using Wi-Fi or LAN, but it does not contain a Thread router. A separate compatible Thread Border Router is therefore required for Thread devices in that arrangement. Because model support changes, treat this as a model-specific example and verify your current hub documentation.

Do not buy a border router merely because a product says Matter. Buy or configure one when the product uses Thread and your existing equipment does not already provide the required function.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSharing one Matter device with another platform
Matter multi-admin lets an already commissioned device be shared with another compatible ecosystem while it remains connected to SmartThings. In the SmartThings flow, the app generates a sharing QR code or setup code; you then complete commissioning in the second platform’s app.
The second platform must support Matter commissioning and the relevant device functions. Matter standardization improves interoperability, but it does not make every advanced feature identical everywhere. A lock, thermostat, or appliance may expose a smaller set of controls in the second app than in its original integration.
SmartThings’ support page says a Matter device can connect to up to five services. That is a platform limit reported on that page and should be rechecked in current support documentation if you plan to share the device broadly.
SmartThings hub options and trade-offs
| Option | What it can provide | What you still must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone compatible SmartThings hub | Matter controller functions and, depending on model, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread capabilities | Exact model, radio support, firmware, region, and device-category compatibility |
| Hub built into a supported Samsung product | A controller function integrated into certain TVs, Smart Monitors, Family Hub refrigerators, SmartThings Station, or recent Soundbars | Whether the exact product and regional edition include the required hub and Matter features |
| Older SmartThings 2015 Hub | Matter Wi-Fi/LAN control according to older SmartThings compatibility details | Thread Border Router availability and current software support |
| Separate Thread Border Router | Thread-to-IP network connectivity for Thread endpoints | Compatibility with the controller, Thread version, firmware, and ecosystem integration |
Choose a hub when you need SmartThings Matter controller functions or a single platform for Matter plus Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. Add a separate border router only when Thread is part of the plan and no existing equipment supplies it. The named hub examples are not a price list or a guarantee of current regional stock.

SmartThings’ Thread network unification announcement
On October 1, 2025, SmartThings announced two-way Thread network unification. The company said supported SmartThings hubs could join existing Thread networks from other ecosystems, while a border router from another ecosystem could join the Thread network already used by SmartThings.
The announcement specified hub firmware 0.58.x, SmartThings iOS app version 1.7.37.x, or Android app version 1.8.37.x for the announced capability. Third-party border-router vendors control their own Thread 1.4 compatibility updates. Treat this as an implementation-dependent feature tied to those dated software requirements, not as a universal promise for every hub or border router.
What “local” operation does—and does not—mean
SmartThings developer documentation says Edge drivers enable hub-connected devices to run locally on the hub, with benefits including speed, reliability, and enhanced functionality. That statement applies to the integrations that use those hub-connected drivers.
It does not establish that every Matter device, cloud service, voice assistant, or automation in a mixed installation will continue operating without internet access. For each critical routine, identify whether the device integration, trigger, and action are all supported locally and what happens if the hub or cloud service is unavailable.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The QR code is rejected
- Confirm that you selected Matter under Add device, not a vendor-specific pairing path.
- Try manual setup-code entry if the printed code is damaged or the camera cannot focus.
- Check whether the device is already commissioned to another controller; a factory reset may be required.
The device pairs but is unreachable
- For Wi-Fi, verify that the device and controller can reach the same local IP network and that isolation rules are not blocking discovery.
- For Thread, verify that a compatible Border Router is online and associated with the controller’s network.
- Move the device closer to its network equipment during setup, then retest from its final location.
Some controls are missing
- Check the device category and the capabilities exposed by the SmartThings integration.
- Install pending hub, app, and device-firmware updates.
- For a shared device, compare the functions supported by the second platform rather than assuming feature parity.
Automations are slow or fail intermittently
- Determine whether the involved integrations are hub-connected and eligible for local execution.
- Inspect Thread mesh placement and Wi-Fi coverage separately; a strong Wi-Fi signal does not prove that the Thread path is healthy.
- Test the device manually before changing the automation, so you do not mistake a network problem for a rule problem.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify whether the product is Matter over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread.
- Confirm the exact SmartThings controller model and its current regional support.
- If the product uses Thread, identify the existing or planned Border Router.
- Check firmware and app requirements before installation.
- Decide whether Zigbee or Z-Wave support is also needed.
- Commission the device in SmartThings, then test the functions and automations you actually depend on.
- Use Matter multi-admin only after confirming that the second platform supports the required controls.
The key distinction is simple: SmartThings is the platform, Matter is the common language, the hub is the controller, and Thread Border Routing is a transport requirement only for Thread-based devices. Matching each role to the hardware and software you already have prevents unnecessary purchases and explains most setup failures.
