Smartphone cooling is a heat-transport system, not a single “liquid cooling” part. A phone first moves heat away from concentrated sources such as its processor, then spreads it through the chassis and finally releases it to the surrounding air. Heat pipes and vapor chambers perform that transport with a sealed fluid that repeatedly evaporates and condenses; graphite, copper and interface layers provide solid conduction; fans or thermoelectric accessories add powered cooling in selected models. Because every phone has different space, materials, software limits and surface-temperature targets, no architecture is a universal winner.
Why phones need thermal management
Gaming, high-resolution video recording, fast charging, navigation and other sustained workloads turn electrical power into heat. The processor and power-management circuitry generate heat in small areas, while the phone is only a few millimetres thick and has no large heatsink or open airflow path. If that concentrated heat remains near a chip, the chip can become too hot even while the rest of the handset feels comfortable.
The control system responds when temperatures approach a device’s limits. It can lower processor clock speeds, reduce voltage, limit charging power or change background activity. Samsung Principle Engineer Kyungha Koo describes the mechanism this way: “When the temperature reaches a certain point, the application processor (AP) decreases clock rates to prevent excessive heat build-up.” This protective reduction is commonly called thermal throttling. It can preserve reliability, but sustained games or recordings may run at lower performance after the phone heats up.

Samsung notes that hardware spreaders are constrained by the available space and must operate with heat-control algorithms. A larger chamber may delay throttling, but it cannot make heat disappear; the enclosure and surrounding air still have to absorb the energy.

The heat path: pickup, transport, spreading and release
It helps to separate two jobs that product descriptions often blend together:
- Heat transport: moving energy from a hot processor or power component to a larger area. Heat pipes, vapor chambers, copper, graphite, graphene and thermal-interface layers perform this job.
- Heat rejection: transferring that energy from the spreader into the frame, back, display layers or air around the phone. A passive handset ultimately warms its surfaces and the nearby air.
A vapor chamber or heat pipe can make the temperature distribution more even and reduce a severe hotspot. It is not a refrigerator or a reservoir of permanent cooling. If the phone is producing heat faster than its surfaces can release it, the average temperature will continue to rise until software intervenes or the workload ends.
How sealed-fluid cooling cycles work
Both heat pipes and vapor chambers are sealed two-phase devices. They contain a small quantity of working fluid and a wick or other porous structure. Near a hot component, the fluid absorbs energy and evaporates. The vapour travels to a cooler region, condenses back into liquid and releases heat there. Capillary forces in the wick return the liquid to the hot region so the cycle can repeat without a pump.

This is why a phone specification that says “liquid cooling” does not automatically describe a pumped loop. Xiaomi’s global support material calls a vapor chamber a sealed liquid-filled chamber and distinguishes that vapor-chamber heat sink from its separate Loop LiquidCool technology. The chamber’s fluid is enclosed; users do not refill it, and there is normally no motor circulating liquid through external tubing.
Heat pipes: a directional route
A heat pipe is generally a narrow, elongated sealed enclosure. Evaporation occurs near the heat source, vapour moves along the pipe, and condensation occurs farther away. Its geometry favours transport along a line or corridor, which is useful when a hot chip must be connected to a remote frame or another spreader.

Samsung’s account of the Galaxy S7 describes a water-to-steam-to-water cycle inside a porous thermal spreader. Samsung said that particular implementation was 0.4 mm in diameter and that its conductivity was generally more than 50 times that of copper. Those figures describe Samsung’s implementation, not a universal heat-pipe diameter or performance specification.
Vapor chambers: planar spreading
A vapor chamber is a flat sealed cavity, often made from very thin copper, with a wick across its interior. Heat entering near the processor evaporates the fluid; vapour spreads in multiple directions across the plane and condenses in cooler sections. Because the chamber covers an area rather than following one narrow path, it can distribute a hotspot beneath a larger portion of a phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOPPO described the Find X5 Pro’s chamber as an ultra-thin copper cavity containing a small amount of liquid. Xiaomi explains the distinction succinctly: a heat pipe circulates along one line, while a vapor chamber spreads heat in all directions over a plane. The chamber still needs good contact to the processor and a route into the phone’s frame or other layers. Poor interfaces, blocked contact or an enclosure that cannot shed heat can limit the benefit.
Solid spreaders and interface layers
Phones usually combine two-phase parts with solid materials rather than relying on one component. Copper conducts heat away from contact points and can form the walls or a base layer of a chamber. Graphite and graphene films spread heat laterally across large, thin areas. Thermal-interface materials fill microscopic gaps between the processor, chamber, shields and frame, reducing contact resistance.
Examples show how these materials are layered:
- OPPO documented copper and graphite near the Find X5 Pro display and graphene film in other hot zones.
- Samsung described carbon-fiber interface material and an added copper layer in the Galaxy Note9 cooling stack.
- ASUS described graphite sheets used alongside the vapor chamber in the ROG Phone 7.
These layers also influence comfort and reliability. Spreading heat under a broad back panel may prevent one painful hotspot but make more of the surface warm. Designers balance that sensation against internal component temperatures, structural stiffness, radio placement, battery safety and the thickness available for the thermal stack.

Passive and active designs compared
| Architecture | How it moves heat | Power requirement | Representative implementation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat pipe | Sealed fluid evaporates and condenses while transporting heat mainly along a narrow route; a wick returns liquid. | Passive during operation. | Samsung’s Galaxy S7 description of a 0.4 mm-diameter implementation. |
| Vapor chamber | Sealed fluid changes phase and spreads heat across a flat plane before passing it to surrounding layers. | Passive during operation. | OPPO’s ultra-thin copper chamber in the Find X5 Pro. |
| Solid spreader and interface stack | Copper, graphite, graphene and interface materials conduct or distribute heat between layers. | Passive. | Graphite, copper and graphene combinations documented by OPPO, Samsung and ASUS. |
| Integrated fan | Moves air through or across an internal thermal path while passive spreaders distribute heat. | Powered by the phone. | OPPO’s variable-speed centrifugal fan in the K13 Turbo series, combined with a vapor chamber and graphite. |
| External fan and thermoelectric cooler | A fan moves air and a Peltier element actively pumps heat at the accessory’s contact area. | Powered accessory. | ASUS ROG AeroActive Cooler 7 for the ROG Phone 7. |
The table compares mechanisms, not guaranteed results. Manufacturer product pages do not provide a controlled independent test across all these architectures, so a larger chamber or a fan should not be treated as proof that one phone will always outperform another.
What active cooling adds
Active cooling introduces a powered component to increase the rate at which heat can leave a defined area. An integrated fan can force air through a phone’s thermal path. OPPO says the K13 Turbo series uses a variable-speed centrifugal fan inside the handset together with a vapor chamber and graphite. OPPO reported the series as 2–4 °C cooler while gaming in BGMI; that is a manufacturer claim for the named product and workload.
An accessory can be larger than an internal phone part. ASUS describes the ROG AeroActive Cooler 7 for the ROG Phone 7 as combining a fan with a thermoelectric Peltier element. ASUS lists claims of up to 25 °C lower back-cover temperature and up to 8 °C lower touch-panel temperature, plus up to 10% improved overall thermal efficiency and up to 168% improved thermal-cycle efficiency. “Up to” figures are limits in ASUS’s product-page claims, not typical results for every session. The accessory is model-specific; compatibility, power source, noise and handling depend on the phone and accessory design.
A Peltier device can make its contact surface colder, but it also produces heat on its opposite side. The accessory must dispose of that heat through its fan and radiator. Condensation risk, blocked vents or a poor contact position can undermine the result, which is why an active attachment should be used only as its manufacturer specifies.

How cooling affects sustained performance
Short benchmark bursts may finish before a phone reaches its thermal limits. A longer game, camera recording session or charging cycle tests the entire path: processor contact, chamber or pipe capacity, graphite coverage, frame conductivity, surface area, ambient temperature and software policy. Two phones with similar chips can therefore sustain different speeds.
Samsung Senior Engineer Haejin Lee states, “The cooling system continues to work while the smartphone is in use.” In practice, that means the spreader keeps redistributing heat throughout a session; it does not promise a constant low temperature. Once the enclosure and room air approach thermal equilibrium, the phone’s controller may still reduce power to hold a safe operating range.

- Remove insulating obstructions. Use the phone’s specified case and avoid covering vents or the contact area of an approved cooler.
- Reduce simultaneous heat sources. Fast charging while gaming, recording video while navigating and using maximum display brightness all add electrical load.
- Improve the environment. Keep the handset out of direct sun and allow air around its back and edges; a hot room leaves less capacity for passive heat rejection.
- Respect thermal warnings. Stop demanding workloads and let the phone cool if it displays a temperature alert or pauses charging.
- Judge sustained behavior, not a single reading. Compare frame-rate stability, recording duration or charging time under the same ambient conditions rather than relying on a vendor’s maximum claim.
Common misconceptions
“Liquid cooling means a pump and refillable fluid.”
In many phones it means a sealed heat pipe or vapor chamber. The fluid is internal, passive and not user-serviceable. A pumped loop is a different design category.

“A bigger vapor chamber makes the phone colder.”
A larger chamber can spread a hotspot over more area, but final temperature depends on the contact layers, chassis and air. Redistribution is not heat removal.

“Lower surface temperature always means better chip cooling.”
A cooler touch panel may reflect insulation between the heat source and your hand, while the processor remains warm. Conversely, a warm frame can indicate that heat is being moved away from the chip effectively. Component temperature, surface temperature, comfort and sustained performance are separate measurements.
“Active cooling is automatically better.”
Fans and Peltier elements add power use, moving parts and compatibility constraints. Their value depends on the accessory’s contact, airflow path and the workload. Use model-specific claims rather than assuming a universal gain.
How to read a phone’s cooling specification
Look for the architecture and the complete path, not just a marketing label. Ask whether the phone has a heat pipe, a planar vapor chamber, graphite or graphene films, an integrated fan, or support for an external cooler. Check which model and generation the stated size or percentage refers to, whether the result was measured on the phone or its surface, and which workload and region apply. A credible specification should identify the comparison device, test condition and whether a figure is an “up to” maximum.
The most useful conclusion is conditional: heat pipes are efficient line-like transporters, vapor chambers spread heat across a plane, solid films bridge and distribute layers, and active devices add powered heat rejection. The phone’s software, enclosure and environment determine how much of that engineering becomes cooler surfaces or higher sustained performance.
