AI and smart diagnostics can help diesel-truck operators interpret vehicle data, spot patterns that may signal a fault, and plan maintenance. They do not guarantee fewer breakdowns, better fuel economy, or higher uptime: the available studies address specific repair-prediction tasks, not diesel-truck performance as a whole.

What smart diagnostics can read from a diesel truck

Electronic control units communicate diagnostic information through defined vehicle networks. In trucks using SAE J1939, diagnostic messages support service and in-operation reporting, including active trouble codes, diagnostic-lamp status, readiness information, and engine-parameter monitoring. SAE describes the standard’s role this way: “SAE J1939-73 defines the SAE J1939 messages to accomplish diagnostic services and identifies the diagnostic connector to be used for the vehicle service tool interface.” (SAE International, revised September 9, 2026.)

A diagnostic code or data stream is evidence to interpret, not a definitive diagnosis. A code reader may retrieve trouble codes and, depending on its capabilities, live parameters. A technician must still verify a suspected problem against the truck, service information, and operating conditions. The J1939 standard defines communication and diagnostic services; it does not mean a truck has an AI feature or that a scanner itself can predict failures.

How prediction differs from reading a fault code

Conventional diagnostics report current status or recorded faults. Predictive analytics looks for patterns in current measurements, historical operating data, maintenance records, or a combination of them to estimate whether a repair may be needed. That estimate is a prompt for investigation and planning—not certainty that a component will fail.

Example: predicting air-compressor repair needs

A 2015 study used three years of logged vehicle data and maintenance records from commercial trucks and buses to model the need for air-compressor repairs. In that particular task, the authors reported that machine-learning features outperformed features selected by human experts. The result supports the feasibility of predicting a specific repair need from truck data; it does not establish the same performance for other components, fleets, or operating conditions. (Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, May 2015.)

Newer heavy-vehicle work and data challenges

A 2026 study using a Scania-provided dataset examined imminent failure of an anonymized heavy-truck engine component. Its authors describe anonymized measurements, missing values, and class imbalance, and propose a multi-stage preprocessing and feature-selection framework intended to improve robustness and transparency. The reported research does not, by itself, establish production performance or a specific saving in repair costs. (Procedia Computer Science, 2026.)

What AI may—and may not—change for performance and reliability

Earlier warning could give a fleet more time to inspect a truck, schedule service, or arrange parts. Whether that translates into improved uptime, lower costs, longer component life, or better fuel economy depends on what the system can detect, the quality and coverage of its data, the response to an alert, and the truck’s duty cycle. The cited prediction studies do not establish a general improvement in diesel-truck reliability or performance, and no diesel-truck-wide percentage improvement in uptime, fuel economy, reliability, or maintenance cost is established here.

For operational claims, look for measured outcomes over a stated period and a relevant comparison. The U.S. Department of Energy’s medium- and heavy-duty vehicle field evaluations collect vehicle and subsystem performance, maintenance, reliability, warranty data where applicable, and operating costs with fleet and OEM partners. Where comparable conventional vehicles are available, results can be assessed against baseline data. (U.S. Department of Energy, Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicle Field Evaluations.)

How to evaluate a diagnostic tool or fleet service

Start with the job you need done: retrieving codes, viewing live data, explaining a fault, or estimating a future maintenance need. These capabilities are not interchangeable. Use this checklist when evaluating a scanner or fleet service:

  • Compatibility: Confirm supported truck makes, model years, and the protocols required for the vehicles and task, including J1939 where applicable.
  • Data access: Check whether it reads live parameters as well as codes, and whether it can access the manufacturer-specific data you need.
  • Interpretation: Determine whether it provides explanations or only returns raw codes and readings. Treat explanations as leads to verify, not confirmed repairs.
  • Prediction: Ask whether the capability is conventional diagnostics or actual prediction from historical or time-series data. Find out what data the prediction uses and what maintenance outcome it targets.
  • Ongoing requirements: Check update and subscription requirements, and confirm that the tool or service fits the fleet’s data and service workflow.
  • Evidence: For claims about uptime, cost, fuel consumption, or reliability, ask what was measured, on which vehicles and routes, over what period, and against what baseline.

A heavy-duty scanner that supports J1939 can help access diagnostic data, but scanner support alone is not evidence of AI-based prediction. Verify compatibility for the particular truck and intended task; the SAE standard establishes diagnostic services and a service-tool interface, not an endorsement of any commercial product.

How to judge a claimed fleet benefit

Before treating a prediction as a reliability improvement, separate the model’s result from the fleet’s operating result. A model may identify a repair need in a study; a fleet benefit requires evidence that alerts led to effective action and improved a meaningful measure under comparable conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identify the specific component and failure or repair event being predicted.
  • Check whether the data represent the fleet’s trucks, routes, loads, and maintenance practices.
  • Ask how missing or imbalanced data and false alerts are handled, and how technicians verify predictions.
  • Compare measured maintenance, reliability, or operating-cost outcomes with an appropriate baseline over a defined period.

Without that operational evidence, describe AI as a tool that may support earlier maintenance planning—not as proof of fewer breakdowns or better truck performance.
