For a small SaaS, dependable monitoring needs two separate signals: an external check that tests a customer-facing API, and a heartbeat that reports when a scheduled job runs. The API check can flag an endpoint returning an unexpected response; the heartbeat can flag a job that did not report on time. Neither confirms the other is healthy.

What API checks and cron heartbeats detect

An external HTTP or API monitor requests an endpoint from outside your application and evaluates the response. A basic status check can identify an unacceptable HTTP status. A deeper API check can also look for expected response content and, depending on the service, use a chosen request method, body, or authentication.

A cron heartbeat works in the opposite direction: the monitor waits for the scheduled task to contact a unique URL. If the job fails to report within its expected interval and grace period, the monitor can raise an incident. Some services also provide a separate failure endpoint so a job can explicitly report an unsuccessful run.

These signals cover different failure modes. A healthy public endpoint does not prove that a background task ran, and a recent heartbeat does not prove that customers can reach the API.

Choose checks that match the customer outcome

Monitor critical API routes

Start with routes tied directly to customer outcomes, such as a service availability or account-access endpoint. Choose a check that tests what matters: status alone may be sufficient for a simple availability signal, while a required response keyword adds a basic content assertion. A status or keyword check is not automatically a full end-to-end test of your application.

Better Stack’s documentation describes external synthetic checks and says its HTTP status monitor creates an incident and alerts the on-call person when the response is not 2xx. Its API monitor documentation distinguishes a status-code check from a keyword check, and covers request method, optional body, and authentication setup. These are examples of documented capabilities, not a recommendation that one provider is best for every team: uptime monitoring and API monitors.

Heartbeat consequential scheduled work

Prioritize jobs where a missed run has a real consequence, such as backups or billing reconciliation. Configure the heartbeat to expect the job at its actual cadence, then make the successful task call its unique heartbeat URL only after its work completes. Where supported, report failure separately or send the job’s exit status so an unsuccessful execution is not mistaken for a successful one.

In Better Stack’s documented heartbeat flow, a new monitor stays pending until its first request; after that, it measures the expected period and grace window. A missed request after that allowance triggers an incident. The guide also documents a failure endpoint. See cron and heartbeat monitoring.

  • Instant Alert & 24/7 Monitoring - Keep tabs on your Home, RV, Car, or Pets from anywhere with the 3-in-1 temperature, humidity & power outage monitor. Customize the high and low temp/humidity thresholds and add up to 5 contacts for unlimited text and email alerts. Receive real-time alerts if critical changes in temp/humidity or a power loss occurs.
  • Rechargeable Internal Battery - The Necto smart RV and pet monitor has a 3 day long-lasting rechargeable battery. Unlike WiFi sensors, Necto provides continuous monitoring in the event of a power outage, via its built-in battery and cellular technology. Receive instant alerts on your phone when battery power is low or if the device disconnects from the network.
  • Intuitive Mobile App & Easy Setup - Our user-friendly mobile app gives you remote access to your sensor from anywhere. Use your smartphone or PC to customize alert thresholds, view past readings, and manage device settings with ease. The sensor takes minutes to install and requires no technical expertise. Simply activate the device through the app and plug it into any standard wall outlet.
  • Fast Refresh & Free Data Storage - The industrial built-in temperature and humidity sensor takes readings every 10 seconds to make sure the temp/humidity are within the safe range. Every 10 minutes the most recent reading is updated on the online portal. Readings are stored on our servers for 1 year and can be downloaded anytime on a CSV file.

Set intervals and grace periods for real operating conditions

Choose an external check frequency based on how quickly you need to know that an endpoint is failing. Shorter intervals can reduce detection delay, but may be limited by the provider’s plan and can create more alerts. Better Stack’s monitor API documentation lists monitor types including status, expected status, keyword, keyword absence, ping, TCP, and UDP. Its frequency documentation describes options ranging from three minutes on free plans to 30 seconds on paid plans; those plan-dependent settings are volatile and should be confirmed in the current documentation before choosing a plan. See monitor API options.

For a heartbeat, set the expected period to the real schedule and allow enough grace for normal delays such as variable runtime or scheduler jitter. Better Stack’s API documentation gives a minimum period of 30 seconds and a minimum grace of zero seconds, and recommends grace of about 20% of the period. Those are vendor-specific documented settings and guidance, not universal monitoring standards; check the current heartbeat API documentation before relying on them.

Roll out monitoring without creating alert noise

  1. Inventory what matters. List critical public API routes and scheduled jobs, prioritizing customer-facing functions and jobs whose missed execution has a consequence.
  2. Choose an assertion for each API route. Decide whether an acceptable HTTP status is enough or whether the response must contain an expected string. Treat these checks as availability signals, not proof of complete application correctness.
  3. Configure each heartbeat. Match its period to the job’s real schedule, choose a realistic grace window, and place the success request after the work finishes. Use a failure-reporting mechanism when the service supports one.
  4. Assign alert ownership. Choose a primary responder, notification channels, and escalation rules that fit the team’s ability to act. Better Stack documents email, push, SMS, and call options for heartbeats, as well as automatic incident creation from monitors and heartbeats. Its incident records can be tracked through resolution: incident management documentation.
  5. Confirm the response path. Make sure the team knows where incidents arrive and who owns them. Account for planned maintenance where the monitoring service supports it, and adjust timing if normal variation produces unnecessary alerts.

Evaluate a monitoring service against your workflow

Compare the capabilities that affect your setup rather than relying on a generic “uptime monitoring” label:

  • API assertions: Can it check status, response content, method, request body, and authentication as needed?
  • Scheduled-job coverage: Does it detect missed runs, support a grace period, and distinguish explicit job failure from a missing heartbeat?
  • Timing and limits: What check frequencies are available, and are they limited by plan?
  • Alerting and escalation: Can alerts reach the people and channels your team can respond to?
  • Operational fit: Can you configure it using the tools and API patterns that fit your stack?

Better Stack’s official documentation supports the API-check and heartbeat patterns described here, but does not establish an apples-to-apples comparison with other providers or their current pricing. Choose based on the requirements above and verify changeable limits directly with the service.
