Small businesses use embedded finance to accept payments, receive payouts, access financing, and manage money through commerce, industry, or software platforms they already use. The service appears inside a familiar workflow, but the financial provider, eligibility rules, costs, and support arrangements still matter.
What embedded finance means for a small business
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) describes embedded finance as integrating financial services into nonfinancial platforms or applications to expand access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). In practice, a business might take customer payments in its sales software, see a financing offer in a merchant dashboard, or use an account or card through a business platform.
The platform is the point of access; it is not necessarily the financial institution providing or funding the service. The particular arrangement varies by product and platform. An embedded offer should therefore be evaluated as a financial product, not assumed to be just another software feature.

Payments and payouts in business software
Payment acceptance can be built into a platform a business already uses to sell or provide services. The platform may also facilitate payouts, so the business can manage the payment flow without moving between separate systems. IFC describes this broader model across sectors including mobility, agriculture, manufacturing, services, supply chains, and e-commerce. Stripe describes platform services that include payment acceptance and payouts.

Financing inside a merchant platform
A platform may present financing to businesses based on their activity or history on that platform. For example, Shopify says Capital offers may depend on store location, history, platform use, and interaction. Shopify lists inventory, marketing, physical retail space, and staffing among possible uses. Availability is limited to specified countries and eligible merchants.
Square says it reviews a merchant’s processing activity when assessing eligibility for invitation-based loan offers. Its described repayment method automatically draws from daily Square sales. Businesses should check the offer’s terms, total cost, and repayment effect on cash flow; an offer is neither guaranteed access nor a general recommendation to borrow.

Accounts and cards
Some platforms offer money-management features such as accounts for holding or moving funds and virtual or physical cards for business spending. Stripe describes platform accounts that support ACH and wire transfers, as well as cards for platform users. The features and availability depend on the provider and platform.
What the evidence does—and does not—say about adoption
There is no representative overall estimate in the reviewed sources for the share of small businesses using embedded finance. Examples show how products can work, but they do not establish how common those products are or whether they improve business outcomes.

Several often-cited financial statistics measure something different:
- The FDIC’s 2024 report on its 2022 bank survey says 31% of surveyed banks used fintech in small-business lending, while a further 22% were discussing or developing it. The survey was conducted from June 2022 through January 2023 and concerns banks’ lending practices—not the percentage of small businesses using embedded finance.
- In the Federal Reserve Banks’ Small Business Credit Survey, 37% of U.S. small employer firms applied for a loan, line of credit, or merchant cash advance in the prior 12 months. The figure describes credit demand, not whether financing was embedded in a platform.
- The Bank of England’s 2025 Financial Stability Report, citing SME Finance Monitor evidence, says around 80% of UK SMEs were not seeking external finance in 2024. That is a measure of finance-seeking, not embedded-finance use.
These figures should not be combined or presented as an embedded-finance adoption rate: they refer to different populations, geographies, and questions.

Why platforms offer financial services—and what to check

- Who provides the service? Identify the financial provider and, for credit, who makes or funds the offer.
- What are the terms and costs? Review fees, total repayment, repayment timing, and consequences for your cash flow.
- What data is used? Understand what platform, payment, or business information informs eligibility and how it is handled.
- Where can you get help? Find the support and complaint route for the financial product, which may differ from support for the platform itself.
- Is the product available to your business? Check geography, eligibility criteria, and any invitation or approval requirements.
The IFC also highlights evolving regulation, data protection, fraud, privacy, security, and accurate credit-information reporting as concerns in embedded finance. A familiar interface does not remove those risks or replace the need to understand the product’s terms and provider.
How to assess an embedded-finance offer
Compare an embedded product with alternatives using the same practical questions: what service it provides, who is eligible, how money moves, how repayment works, what it costs, what data is used, who the underlying provider is, and where to seek support. The available evidence describes platform examples but does not establish that embedded offers outperform comparable financial products.
