Silicon spin qubits are made by building nanoscale structures that confine individual electrons or holes, then using nearby electrical gates to control their spin states. Their planar layouts and transistor-like gates overlap with established CMOS fabrication methods, which could help make larger quantum processors practical. But “CMOS-compatible” describes a spectrum of manufacturing overlap—not a drop-in recipe: spin qubits still need specialized materials, millikelvin cooling, careful control of device variability, and scalable readout and classical electronics.

What a silicon spin qubit is

A silicon spin qubit stores quantum information in the spin of a charge carrier—usually an electron, though holes can also be used. Spin is an intrinsic property of the particle that can be controlled and measured as a quantum state. In a common design, an electron is confined in a gate-defined quantum dot: a tiny region where voltages create an energy landscape that holds the electron in place. Donor-based silicon qubits, which use dopant atoms to localize carriers, are another approach.

The word “qubit” refers to the information-bearing quantum system, not to the whole device or computer. The silicon structure must also support ways to initialize a state, manipulate it, and read it out. A fabricated chip is one part of that system; cryogenic hardware, control signals, measurement electronics, and the classical layer that coordinates operations are separate requirements.

How a gate-defined silicon device is made

There is no single universal process flow. Research platforms use different material stacks, device geometries, and fabrication sequences. The following is a representative explanation of a planar silicon MOS quantum-dot device, not a recipe that applies unchanged to every spin-qubit platform.

1. Build the silicon and insulating stack

The starting structure includes silicon and insulating or other material layers that establish the environment in which charge carriers can be confined. The precise materials and interfaces matter: the relevant device is not simply an ordinary silicon transistor operated at a colder temperature. Different stacks can produce different confinement and affect the properties that make a useful qubit.

2. Pattern gates above the silicon

Metal gates are patterned above the silicon. Applying voltages to these gates changes the electrostatic potential below them. The gate layout is designed so that the resulting potential can localize an electron or hole into a small region, forming a quantum dot. The planar arrangement and electrical control resemble ideas used in transistor fabrication, although the dimensions and performance targets are those of a quantum device.

3. Tune a dot and its neighbors electrically

Gate voltages set and adjust the dot’s confinement, energy levels, and charge configuration. In an array, additional gates control the coupling between neighboring dots. That coupling matters because interacting spins can be used to perform two-qubit operations. Electrical tunability gives researchers a way to adjust the device after fabrication, but it does not remove the need to manufacture structures with suitable properties in the first place.

4. Add a way to sense the state

A qubit’s spin is not usually read as a simple electrical signal from the spin itself. Readout structures can detect charge or transitions whose behavior depends on the spin state. A nearby sensor or a dispersive readout arrangement may be used, depending on the platform. These structures consume space and add design constraints: an array needs not only dots and coupling gates, but also a workable way to measure qubits and route control signals.

5. Operate the device as part of a larger system

Once fabricated, the device must be cooled and controlled. Spin-qubit operation takes place at millikelvin temperatures, far below ordinary room-temperature logic operation. Electrical or microwave control and low-noise readout must work with the cryogenic device. The quantum chip, its quantum-classical interface, and classical control electronics therefore have to be considered together even though they are distinct layers of the system.

What “CMOS-compatible” means—and what it does not

CMOS compatibility is best understood as a gradient. At a basic level, it can mean using silicon, planar device layouts, electrostatic gates, and fabrication ideas related to transistor manufacturing. At a more demanding level, it means transferring a process to an industrial-grade line while meeting qubit-specific requirements and preserving acceptable yield and throughput. At the system level, it includes integrating suitable control electronics with a cryogenic quantum device.

A 2023 review in Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, “Silicon spin qubits from laboratory to industry,” describes foundry-compatible integration in terms of process steps that can transfer to an industrial-grade line while minimally affecting global yield and throughput. This is an operational description from the review, not a formal standards-body definition. It helps explain why “made in silicon” alone is not enough to establish that a device is ready for routine foundry production.

A 2026 review in Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering puts the attraction succinctly: “Semiconductor spin qubits align naturally with CMOS processes, owing to their submicrometre footprint, planar layouts and electrostatic control.” That alignment is meaningful, but it does not mean that any mass-market CMOS line can fabricate a complete, fault-tolerant quantum computer without changes to its process or integration strategy.

A practical compatibility ladder

  • Structural overlap: the device uses silicon, planar geometry, and electrically controlled gates with conceptual similarities to transistor structures.
  • Process transfer: fabrication steps are adapted or transferred to an industrial wafer process, with monitoring of the qubit-relevant properties affected by those steps.
  • Manufacturing readiness: the process delivers the device performance, repeatability, yield, and throughput required for its intended use.
  • System integration: qubits, readout, cryogenic operation, and classical control electronics work together at useful scale.

A demonstration at one level is not evidence that all the levels have been achieved. For example, fabricating working devices with an industrial wafer process is an important manufacturing result, but it does not by itself demonstrate a production-ready, fault-tolerant computer.

Why the CMOS connection could help scaling

Silicon spin-qubit structures have a small footprint and a planar geometry, while their gates are controlled electrically. Those features offer a natural point of contact with semiconductor manufacturing, where dense planar devices and process control are well established. If suitable fabrication steps can be transferred and monitored, mature semiconductor process knowledge could help produce devices across wafers rather than relying only on isolated laboratory structures.

The potential benefit is not just making more dots. A larger system also needs repeatable devices, tightly controlled connections between them, workable sensing, and an interface to classical electronics. Semiconductor fabrication experience could contribute to the device layer, while co-design with control electronics could help address how signals reach and measurements return from an array. This makes CMOS-related manufacturing a plausible route toward larger systems, not a guarantee of any particular qubit count, performance level, or timetable.

The system challenge is especially important because control and readout hardware cannot be treated as afterthoughts. Their footprint and wiring requirements can constrain the array, and their electronics must operate compatibly with the cryogenic environment. Scaling therefore involves coordinated engineering across the quantum layer, the quantum-classical interface, and the classical layer, not simply shrinking gate dimensions or repeating a dot pattern.

Why ordinary CMOS processes are not automatically enough

Millikelvin operation changes the engineering context

Conventional logic chips are designed to operate under conditions very different from those required by spin qubits. Spin-qubit operation needs millikelvin temperatures. That requirement affects the surrounding control, readout, and packaging problem, even if some fabrication steps resemble transistor manufacturing. A CMOS-like device geometry does not make a quantum system function like a room-temperature processor.

Materials and interfaces need qubit-specific attention

The useful material stack and the quality of its interfaces influence the behavior of a quantum dot and its spin. Some requirements may lie outside conventional CMOS practice or require process choices that differ from those optimized for logic transistors. A process can be excellent at producing ordinary transistors yet still need engineering changes to create the material and interface conditions a qubit requires.

Small variations can change important quantum properties

Manufacturing variation matters because the properties that affect spin-qubit behavior are not limited to familiar transistor metrics. A 2024 Nature Communications study on electron-spin-qubit variability for scalable CMOS architectures identifies spin-orbit coupling, exchange coupling, and valley splitting as properties affected by device variation. A qubit-aware process therefore needs ways to monitor or characterize variation that could alter these behaviors, rather than assuming that strong transistor-oriented process control automatically guarantees uniform qubits.

Control and readout must scale with the array

Each device needs a way to be controlled and measured, and a large array increases the burden of routing, sensing, and coordinating signals. Readout structures take up physical and electrical resources, while classical control electronics must interface with the quantum layer under cryogenic constraints. Integration is a co-design problem: optimizing the quantum device in isolation may not produce an arrangement that is practical to operate as part of a larger system.

What a 300 mm wafer-process demonstration shows

A concrete example is Jacob F. Chittock-Wood’s 2026 UCL doctoral thesis, “Exchange control and readout of spins in 300 mm wafer processed silicon MOS quantum dots.” The public thesis record describes natural planar silicon MOS quantum dots fabricated by collaborators at imec using a customized 300 mm wafer process. The reported measurements apply to the devices studied in that thesis, not to silicon spin qubits generally.

For those devices, the thesis abstract reports coherent control of two electron spins through electrically tunable exchange interaction and dephasing times, T2*, up to approximately 500 ns. It also reports qubit quality factors above 10. For an radio-frequency electron-cascade readout method, it reports a signal-to-noise enhancement greater than 35 dB and a minimum integration time of 7.6 μs. These are specific reported results, not typical specifications or guarantees for devices made with a 300 mm process.

The example is useful because it connects industrial-scale wafer processing with operating spin-qubit devices and readout research. It does not establish that a complete quantum processor has been manufactured at production scale, that all devices on a wafer perform alike, or that the process already meets the needs of a fault-tolerant system. The thesis repository states that its full text is restricted until 1 April 2027, so the public abstract and metadata do not support more detailed claims about its process or results.

How to assess a claim of CMOS compatibility

When comparing two platforms or manufacturing demonstrations, the phrase “CMOS-compatible” is too broad to settle the question by itself. Look for evidence that connects the fabrication process to device operation and system needs:

  • Substrate and material stack: What materials and interfaces host the carriers, and are they specified well enough to understand the device?
  • Gate geometry and pitch: What structure confines and couples the dots, and are dimensions reported? If they are not, a density comparison is not established.
  • Manufacturing route: Was the device made in a research facility or with an industrial wafer process? If industrial processing is claimed, what was customized or transferred?
  • Operating evidence: How many qubits were operated, and what single-qubit and two-qubit control results were demonstrated?
  • Readout evidence: How were states sensed, and what measurement performance was reported?
  • Variation and yield: Are device-to-device variation and wafer-level yield measured? A working device alone does not answer either question.
  • Integration: Were cryogenic operation and control electronics integrated, or are they described as future system requirements?
  • Reproducibility: Do results hold across multiple devices or wafers, or are they confined to a particular demonstration?

Performance numbers should be compared only when the underlying operation, measurement method, and experimental conditions match. A coherence or readout figure without that context can be misleading, and a process label cannot substitute for evidence about yield or repeatability.

The useful takeaway

Silicon spin qubits are built by confining electrons or holes in nanoscale structures and controlling them with patterned electrical gates; nearby structures provide coupling and readout. Their planar, transistor-like design gives them a credible connection to CMOS manufacturing and the possibility of leveraging semiconductor process expertise. The compatibility is real but partial: translating it into scalable quantum hardware requires qubit-aware materials and process control, cryogenic operation, reliable readout, and integration with classical electronics.
