Yes—Shrek 2 supports four-player local co-op, but only on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube console editions. The PC and Game Boy Advance versions are single-player. Multiplayer is same-console couch co-op, not an online mode: every participant plays through the shared four-character party on one screen or console session.
For four-player PlayStation 2 play, you need a PS2 multitap and four compatible controllers. Xbox and GameCube players need the console edition and enough compatible controllers. Connect a controller and press Start to join; when somebody leaves, the computer can take over that character.
Which Shrek 2 versions support multiplayer?
The version matters more than the disc label. Activision’s April 28, 2004 release announcement describes multiplayer for the three home-console editions, while it identifies the PC and Game Boy Advance releases as single-player. Buying a PC copy or the handheld cartridge will not give you a hidden local-co-op option.
| Platform | Local players | Online play | What four players require | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 2 | 1–4 | No online mode listed | PS2 multitap plus four compatible controllers | Multitap support is documented for the PS2 edition. |
| Xbox | 1–4 | No online mode listed | Additional compatible controllers | Use the original Xbox console release, not the PC version. |
| Nintendo GameCube | 1–4 | No online mode listed | Additional compatible controllers | The four-player feature belongs to the console release. |
| PC | 1 | No | Not applicable | Activision describes this edition as single-player. |
| Game Boy Advance | 1 | No | Not applicable | Activision describes this edition as single-player. |
The four-player figure means up to four people on one console. It does not mean four networked players, cross-play, or a modern online service.

How the co-op party works
Shrek 2’s cooperative design keeps four characters in the active party. In a one-player game, one person controls a character and the computer controls the other three. The PlayStation 2 manual states: You control 1 of the 4 characters in single player games. The computer controls the other 3.
When additional people join, each human takes control of one party character. Colored circles identify the player-controlled characters, making it easier to tell who is responsible for which hero during busy sections. The manual summarizes the capacity directly: Shrek 2™ can have up to 4 players.
This is cooperative progression rather than a competitive versus mode. Everyone works through the same adventure, including the campaign’s 11 action-packed levels identified in Activision’s 2004 announcement. The game’s party structure also lets a session continue if somebody has to step away: a departing player’s character returns to computer control instead of forcing the group to restart.
Fewer than four human players
A two- or three-person group still has four active characters. Any unclaimed character remains computer-controlled, and the human players can switch between their own character and characters currently run by the computer. That makes a smaller group flexible: one person can take over a needed character for a particular obstacle without adding another participant.

Four human players
With all four character slots occupied by people, character swapping is disabled. Each player stays with the character they control for that session. This rule prevents two people from selecting the same role and keeps the four-way control assignment unambiguous.
What you need before starting
The correct game disc or cartridge
- Choose the PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube edition for local multiplayer.
- Do not choose the PC or Game Boy Advance edition if couch co-op is the reason you are buying it; those versions are single-player.
A compatible console and display
You need one working original console connected to a television or other compatible display. All players share that console session; a second console does not add another player.
One controller per person
Plan on one supported controller for every human participant. MobyGames lists DualShock and DualShock 2 support for the PS2 release. For Xbox and GameCube, use controllers compatible with the respective console and provide enough of them for the number of people joining.
A PS2 multitap for four-player PS2 sessions
The PlayStation 2 has two standard controller ports, so a four-person session needs a PS2 multitap to connect the additional controllers. The Shrek 2 PS2 manual includes a multitap setup section, and the PS2 release is catalogued with multitap support. A multitap is unnecessary for one- or two-player PS2 play if the required controllers plug directly into the console.

Memory-card hardware for saving, not for multiplayer
The PS2 manual specifies an 8 MB PlayStation 2 memory card, with a Shrek 2 save using 65 KB. That card requirement concerns saving progress. It does not unlock the multiplayer menu or increase the player limit, so a group can play a session without treating the memory card as a multiplayer accessory.
How to set up four-player PlayStation 2 co-op
- Verify the edition. Check that the disc is the PlayStation 2 release. A PC disc cannot be converted into the PS2 multiplayer version.
- Connect the console and display. Start with the PS2 powered off, connect it to the television, and insert the game disc.
- Attach the controllers. Connect the first two compatible controllers to the PS2’s controller ports. Connect a PS2 multitap as directed by its hardware instructions, then attach the third and fourth controllers to the multitap. Use a compatible multitap and controllers; a memory card is not a substitute for the multitap.
- Power on and start the game. Turn on the PS2, allow the game to load, and enter the game’s playable adventure rather than expecting a separate online lobby.
- Have each additional player join. On the controller that person will use, press Start when joining is available. The game identifies participants with colored circles and adds each person to the four-character party.
- Confirm the control assignment. With fewer than four humans, decide who will switch into computer-controlled characters when needed. With four humans, keep in mind that switching is disabled.
- Save progress if desired. Insert the 8 MB PS2 memory card before saving. The card stores progress; it does not affect whether controllers are recognized.
The manual describes joining and leaving without interrupting gameplay. If a participant leaves, the computer assumes control of that character, allowing the remaining players to continue the level.
How Xbox and GameCube multiplayer differs
The Xbox and GameCube editions include the same documented up-to-four-player concept without the PS2-specific multitap requirement. Connect the number of compatible controllers supported by your console setup, launch the console edition, and let each participant press Start to join when the game permits it.

Because the available evidence identifies the extra-controller requirement but does not specify a universal adapter or accessory model for every Xbox or GameCube setup, check that your particular console has enough functioning controller connections before buying the game. The essential distinction is the edition: Xbox and GameCube discs have the four-player feature; the PC edition does not.

Joining, leaving, and changing characters
Joining during a session
Players do not need four people present at the opening screen. Connect a controller and press Start to join an active game, subject to the game’s join prompt. The new participant is assigned one of the party characters and receives a colored player marker.
Leaving without ending the game
The console release announcement says players can join and leave without interrupting gameplay. When somebody leaves, that character is handed back to the computer. The remaining participants therefore keep the current level and party rather than returning to the title screen.
Switching when the party is not full
With two or three human players, the game permits switching between characters controlled by people and characters controlled by the computer. This is useful when a level section calls for a different character or when one person wants to cover a role temporarily.

Why switching stops at four players
When all four characters are human-controlled, there is no computer-controlled character available to take over. The walkthrough’s rule is explicit: character swapping is unavailable with four players, but available between human- and computer-controlled characters when more than one and fewer than four people are playing.

Does Shrek 2 have online multiplayer?
No online mode is listed for these releases. The documented multiplayer is local, same-console co-op: one console, one display, and players sitting together with connected controllers. Services such as modern matchmaking, internet invitations, cross-platform play, and remote co-op are not part of the platform records for Shrek 2.
Common setup problems and fixes
The game only allows one player
- Check the platform first. PC and Game Boy Advance are single-player editions.
- If you are using PS2, confirm that the disc is the PS2 release and that the multitap is connected before launching the game.
- On any console, make sure each controller is compatible, powered, and firmly connected.
A third or fourth PS2 controller is not detected
Four-player PS2 play depends on the multitap path. Power the console down, reseat the multitap and every controller, then start the game again. Test the controllers individually in the standard PS2 ports if possible. A memory card cannot provide additional controller ports.
A player cannot join
Connect the controller before pressing Start, wait until the game is at a point where joining is accepted, and press Start on the controller that person will use. Look for the colored player marker. If no marker appears, return to the physical connection checks and verify that you did not purchase the PC or GBA version.

Count the human participants. Four humans fill all four character slots, so swapping is intentionally disabled. If one participant leaves and the computer takes over that character, the remaining group has fewer than four humans and can use the documented switching behavior.
Progress will not save
On PS2, use an 8 MB PS2 memory card with available space; one Shrek 2 save uses 65 KB according to the manual. Saving is separate from controller setup, so resolve card or space errors independently of multiplayer troubleshooting.
What to check when buying a used copy
For a local session, match the disc to the console you own and verify that the seller identifies the edition clearly. A practical checklist is:
- Console label: PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube.
- Number of players printed in the manual or case details, with four-player support for the console editions.
- For PS2: a working multitap and enough DualShock or DualShock 2-compatible controllers.
- For Xbox or GameCube: enough compatible controllers for the intended group.
- For saved PS2 progress: an 8 MB memory card with at least 65 KB free.
- Disc condition and regional compatibility for your console, which can vary among used copies.
Accessory stock, seller condition, and regional compatibility change constantly, so confirm those details at the time of purchase rather than assuming every used bundle contains a multitap or four controllers.

The practical answer for each group size
- One player: Any edition works as a single-player game, but only the console editions leave open the option to add local players later.
- Two players: Use the PS2, Xbox, or GameCube edition with two compatible controllers. A PS2 multitap is not required for two controllers connected directly to the console.
- Three players: Use a console edition and three controllers; PS2 requires the multitap to add controllers beyond the console’s standard ports. Character switching remains available because one party character is still computer-controlled.
- Four players: Use a PS2, Xbox, or GameCube edition with four compatible controllers. PS2 additionally requires a multitap, and no character swapping is available while all four people are playing.
- Remote or online group: This is not supported by the documented releases; the mode is local couch co-op.
