For a small SaaS, hosted logging is often the better starting point when the team wants failures searchable without taking on another service to run. Self-hosted logging is worth evaluating when you already operate compatible infrastructure, need more control over where logs live, and can assign time to maintain it. Neither option is automatically cheaper: compare the same log volume, retention period, investigation workload, infrastructure costs, and engineering time.
What does hosted app logging cost?
Hosted services take responsibility for operating the logging backend and charge according to their plan and usage. Their pricing units differ, so compare a specific workload rather than a headline price per gigabyte.
Better Stack Logs & Traces
Better Stack’s getting-started documentation describes a workflow in which a source represents an application or other service that generates logs. You connect it using a source token, then use centralized collection, live tail, SQL queries, dashboards, and alerts. These are capabilities described by the vendor, not independent performance findings. See the getting-started documentation.

On its pricing page, accessed in 2026, Better Stack lists 3 GB of logs retained for 3 days on the free tier, $0.10 per GB for ingestion, and $0.05 per GB per month for retention in the Logs & Traces section. Treat those as page figures, not a guaranteed quote: check the current plan, region, and configuration before estimating a bill. See Better Stack pricing.

Grafana Cloud Logs
Grafana describes Cloud Logs as a fully managed log aggregation service powered by Loki OSS. Its pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists a free Logs tier with 50 GB ingested per month and 14-day retention. The page also displays a Pro offer with a $19 monthly platform fee plus usage-based write and retention rates. Verify the live calculator, included allowance, and rates for your account before making a purchase decision. See Grafana Cloud pricing, usage and billing documentation, and Grafana Cloud Logs.
Is self-hosted logging actually cheaper?
It can be, but open-source software does not eliminate operating costs. With a self-managed stack, your team installs, administers, and maintains the components. Budget for compute, storage, backups, retention decisions, upgrades, monitoring, alerting, and the engineering time needed to keep the system useful. The official documentation establishes those responsibilities and architecture; it does not publish a universal self-hosted bill.

Loki is Grafana’s log-aggregation system. Its architecture indexes labels attached to log streams rather than the full text of each log entry; compressed chunks can be stored in object storage such as S3 or GCS, or on a local filesystem. The documented stack includes Alloy for collection, Loki for storage and queries, and Grafana for visualization. Storage choice and workload affect the bill, so no one backend can be assumed to be cheapest for every SaaS. See Loki architecture, Loki storage, and Grafana deployment options.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Monthly ingestion: estimate the volume of logs your applications will send.
- Retention: choose how many days logs must remain searchable and estimate the retained data volume.
- Investigation workload: account for how often developers will query logs and how much data those queries scan. Compare the actual billing model and usage units on each provider’s current page.
- Hosted charges: apply the plan’s included allowance and applicable ingestion, retention, platform, or other usage charges to your workload.
- Self-hosted costs: price compute, storage, backups, and the capacity needed for your retention and query needs.
- Operator time: estimate time for setup, upgrades, monitoring, backup checks, and troubleshooting. Include it even if your team does not assign it a separate cash expense.
- Failure workflow: check whether a developer can filter around an error and connect relevant logs with metrics or traces when those are needed.
- Deployment and data handling: consider available collector integrations, where data is stored, and who administers the system. Do not infer compliance suitability from deployment control alone.
Better Stack’s published log figures use ingestion and retained-volume rates, while Grafana Cloud’s pricing is organized by product and usage. A per-GB comparison by itself therefore does not establish which option costs less. For Grafana Cloud, consult the current usage and billing documentation as well as the pricing page.
How much log retention do you need?
Choose retention around the time it takes your team to notice, reproduce, and investigate a failure—not simply the longest period included in a free tier. A short window can be sufficient for promptly reported issues; a longer one may help when failures are intermittent or discovered late. Longer retention also means more stored data or a higher hosted charge, depending on the service’s pricing model. Estimate the retention window you actually need, then compare options against it rather than treating different plan allowances as equivalent.

What do you need to run Loki yourself?
A self-managed Loki setup needs a way to collect logs, a Loki deployment to store and query them, a storage backend configured for your retention needs, and a visualization and investigation interface. Grafana’s documented stack pairs Alloy, Loki, and Grafana; Loki storage documentation covers object storage and local filesystem options. Your team also owns installation, administration, maintenance, and the surrounding operational work.
A collector does not make the backend self-hosted: it is the component that sends telemetry to a destination. For example, Better Stack documents an open-source Apache 2.0 collector bundle with OpenTelemetry, Vector, OBI, and Prometheus exporters, plus deployment integrations such as Docker and Kubernetes. Using a collector from that bundle is separate from choosing a hosted or self-managed logging backend. See collector documentation.

Which approach fits a small SaaS?
| Decision factor | Hosted logging | Self-hosted Loki |
|---|---|---|
| Operational responsibility | The provider manages the logging service; the team configures sources and its logging workflow. | The team installs, administers, upgrades, and maintains the stack. |
| Cost basis | Plan allowances and provider-defined usage charges; compare current rates for the intended workload. | Compute, storage, backups, retention, and operator time; the project documentation does not establish a universal total. |
| Data control | Logs are handled by the selected provider and its service configuration. | The team chooses and administers its deployment and storage configuration. |
| Practical fit | Often attractive when quick access to searchable logs matters more than operating the backend. | Worth evaluating when the team already runs compatible infrastructure and can maintain the service. |
Logging is not a substitute for every observability tool. Application logs capture emitted events; distributed traces show request paths across components, while metrics summarize measurements over time. Some platforms package or connect these signals, but they answer different questions. Choose the signals your failure investigations require rather than assuming raw error text covers them all.
