Security cameras detect possible tampering by looking for a significant change in the image they are monitoring. Depending on the model, analytics may identify a blocked or covered view, blur or defocus, a redirected camera, underexposure, or a broader scene change. When the change exceeds the camera’s configured threshold for long enough, it creates a tampering event. That event may trigger a notification, recording, or another action only if the camera or connected software has been configured to do so.

What tamper detection actually means

Tamper detection is an image-condition feature, not a universal vandalism detector. The camera analyzes video frames and compares what it sees with a normal scene or a previous reference. If enough of the picture changes, loses detail, becomes unusually dark, or remains obstructed for the required period, the system reports an event.

Manufacturers implement this differently. Axis Image Health Analytics, documented in October 2025, describes learning scene behavior and detecting blocked, redirected, blurred, or underexposed images. Its application can generate one event when the abnormal condition starts and another when the image returns to normal. Other products expose sensitivity, affected-area, or minimum-duration controls. There is no industry-wide algorithm or threshold that applies to every camera.

An event proves that the image changed according to the product’s rules. It does not prove who caused the change or that anyone intended to interfere with the camera.

How a camera decides that the image has changed

Scene comparison

A basic implementation stores or continually updates a reference view. New frames are compared with that reference. If a large enough portion of the image differs, the system considers a possible obstruction, movement, or scene change.

Senstar’s Symphony 7.6 documentation describes comparing subsequent frames with a previous reference frame after a significant scene change. If the change persists longer than the configured minimum tampering time, the system determines that an obstruction may be present. This is one implementation example, not a specification for all cameras.

Image-quality analysis

Some analytics focus on image characteristics rather than only pixel differences. They can assess whether the scene has lost sharpness, become substantially darker, or no longer resembles the learned normal view. Milesight lists defocus, redirection, and other tamper conditions; Hanwha camera documentation exposes sensitivity and a minimum monitoring duration.

These approaches can overlap. A hand over the lens may produce a blocked image and a dark image at the same time, while a moved camera may produce a broad scene change without making the picture blurry.

Threshold and persistence tests

To avoid reacting to every passing object or brief lighting fluctuation, a product normally applies two tests: how large or severe the change is, and how long it lasts. Sensitivity may alter the required amount of affected image area. A minimum persistence setting prevents a momentary obstruction from becoming an event.

Controls and labels vary by model. Look for names such as Tampering detection, Camera tampering, Image health, Obstruction, Sensitivity, Detection area, or Minimum monitoring duration.

Conditions that cameras may detect

Condition What the camera observes Typical causes
Blocked or blinded view Enough of the image is covered, masked, or otherwise unavailable to cross the product’s obstruction threshold. A hand, cloth, tape, paint, a nearby object, or a deliberately covered housing.
Blur or defocus Edges and detail become less sharp than the normal reference image. Defocus, a dirty lens or window, raindrops, condensation, vibration, or an object very close to the lens.
Redirection or movement The camera’s framing no longer matches the expected view. A bumped mount, a rotated housing, a moved pan-tilt position, or an installer changing the aim.
Underexposure The image becomes substantially darker, sometimes after a light source disappears. A covered lens, a switched-off light, a changed exposure environment, or a lighting fault.
Broader scene change A large part of the scene differs from its reference, even when the lens is not physically covered. Furniture, construction materials, a moved camera, changed lighting, or another major environmental change.

Not every camera supports every category. A model may advertise tamper detection while implementing only blocked-image analysis, or it may provide separate options for defocus and redirection.

One documented obstruction threshold example

A TP-Link UK support article updated September 4, 2026, gives concrete figures for the tampering feature on the supported Tapo models it lists. At low sensitivity, the alert threshold is 77% or more of the image blocked; medium sensitivity is 69.5% or more; high sensitivity is 61% or more.

Setting in the cited Tapo example Blocked image required How to interpret it
Low sensitivity At least 77% Requires a larger obstruction and is less likely to react to small changes.
Medium sensitivity At least 69.5% Intermediate obstruction threshold.
High sensitivity At least 61% Reacts to a smaller blocked portion of the frame.

Those percentages belong to the described supported feature and region. They are not an industry benchmark and should not be applied to another brand, model, firmware version, or country.

Why a tampering alert may be a false alarm

The analytics see an image condition, not intent. Normal environmental changes can satisfy the same rule used to detect interference.

  • Water on the view: Raindrops on a window or protective cover can scatter light and create blur. Axis also identifies raindrops as a source of blurred images.
  • Dirty glass or lens: Smudges, dust, insects, condensation, or residue can reduce contrast and sharpness.
  • Nearby movement: An object close to the camera can cover enough of the frame to resemble a blocked lens, even if it is not touching the camera.
  • Reflections: Strong reflections from indoor lights can alter a large area of the image and trigger obstruction or scene-change logic.
  • Lighting changes: A lamp switching off, sunlight changing, or a light source disappearing can look like underexposure or a broad scene change.
  • Vibration or an unstable mount: A small shift can make the current framing differ from the reference view.
  • Privacy or operating modes: A scheduled privacy shutter, repositioning routine, or intentional scene change may be reported unless the product handles that state separately.

When an alert arrives, inspect the live view and recorded timeline before treating it as vandalism. Check the lens or protective window, weather, reflections, lighting, mounting hardware, and any recent changes in the camera’s position.

Detection is separate from notification and recording

The tamper analytic identifies a condition. A separate event rule determines what happens next. Depending on the product, an event can:

Axis documents configuring event rules in the device’s event-management system or in third-party software, including a rule that asks staff to clean a camera or alerts security personnel. The Tapo guidance makes a different, model-specific distinction: its tampering feature sends an alert but does not itself create a video recording of the tampering event. Confirm the behavior of your exact camera rather than assuming that an alert automatically preserves evidence.

How to configure tamper detection

Menu names differ, but the following sequence works as a configuration checklist.

  1. Confirm support. Read the camera’s manual and firmware notes for tampering, obstruction, image-health, defocus, or redirection detection. Feature availability can vary by model, firmware, and region.
  2. Set a stable reference view. Aim and focus the camera, tighten the mount, remove temporary objects, and allow the scene to reach its normal lighting condition before enabling analytics.
  3. Choose the detection categories. Enable only the conditions the camera supports and that matter at this location. A sheltered indoor camera may need blocked-view detection but not rain-related blur monitoring.
  4. Configure sensitivity or affected area. Start with the manufacturer’s default. Increase sensitivity when small obstructions matter; reduce it when normal scene activity produces repeated alarms.
  5. Set persistence or minimum duration. Use a delay long enough to ignore brief passers-by or momentary exposure changes, but short enough to report a genuine covered or moved camera promptly.
  6. Configure the response rule. Select the notification recipients, recording behavior, outputs, or software integration separately from the analytic itself.
  7. Test each condition safely. With authorization, place a temporary object near—not on—the camera, alter the aim only through the approved mount, or use a controlled lighting change. Verify which event appears and what response follows.
  8. Document the baseline. Record the sensitivity, duration, firmware, camera position, and expected lighting so a future change can be diagnosed instead of guessed.

What to check when alerts keep repeating

Start with the image

Open the live view at the time of the alert. If the picture is hazy, inspect the lens and protective window for water, fingerprints, dust, condensation, or residue. Clean the appropriate surface according to the manufacturer’s instructions; cleaning may improve a contaminated view but will not correct every focus, exposure, or hardware problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the environment

Look for a new light source, reflective surface, hanging sign, plant, curtain, vehicle, or object close to the camera. Compare day and night behavior if the alerts occur only during one lighting condition.

Check position and reference behavior

Confirm that the housing has not shifted and that a pan-tilt camera has not been left at a different preset. If the software relearns a reference scene, do so only after the view is correctly aimed and free of temporary obstructions.

Adjust one control at a time

Lower sensitivity or increase the minimum duration when brief, harmless changes trigger events. If a real obstruction is being missed, increase sensitivity or shorten the persistence requirement cautiously. Make one change, observe the result through the relevant weather and lighting conditions, and record the setting.

Verify the event chain

Check whether the event is generated by the camera, a recorder, or management software. Confirm that the intended notification and recording rules are enabled and that the recipient account, network connection, storage, and time zone are correct. A correctly detected event can still produce no message or clip if the downstream rule is disabled.

How to compare tamper-detection systems

When evaluating cameras or platforms, compare the controls rather than relying on the label “tamper detection.”

Comparison question Why it matters
Which conditions are covered? Blocked view, blur, defocus, redirection, underexposure, and general scene change are not interchangeable capabilities.
Can the affected area or sensitivity be adjusted? Adjustability helps match the analytic to a wide-angle view, a narrow corridor, or a scene with expected activity.
Is minimum persistence configurable? A duration filter controls the trade-off between fast detection and nuisance alarms.
What happens after detection? Some systems only alert; others can record, notify multiple recipients, trigger outputs, or integrate with software.
How are normal states handled? Rain, reflections, privacy modes, changing light, and scheduled camera movement can affect reliability.
Which models and firmware support it? Features can be limited to particular hardware, software versions, or regional releases.

What tamper detection cannot tell you

  • It cannot reliably identify the person or object that caused the image change.
  • It cannot distinguish deliberate obstruction from every weather, maintenance, or lighting event.
  • It cannot guarantee that a recording exists unless recording is separately configured and functioning.
  • It cannot use another model’s threshold or menu behavior as its own specification.
  • It cannot replace physical mounting, access control, protective housings, maintenance, or a response plan.

For a security investigation, preserve the camera’s event log, relevant video from before and after the alert, configuration details, and the time zone used by the system. Treat the analytic as an early warning that the camera’s view may be unreliable, then verify the scene through video, an adjacent camera, or an on-site check.

Key takeaway

A security camera detects tampering by measuring whether its image has become blocked, blurry, redirected, unusually dark, or substantially different from its normal scene. Sensitivity, affected-area thresholds, and persistence time determine when that change becomes an event. Because rain, dirt, reflections, lighting, and ordinary movement can look similar, every alert requires context. Configure the detector and the response rule separately, verify the exact model and firmware, and test the complete alert-to-recording workflow before relying on it.
