There is no genre-wide wipe rule. In one extraction shooter, a reset may affect only a seasonal character; in another, it may be an optional player decision; elsewhere, “wipe” may describe a one-time historical server event. Before assuming you will lose everything, identify the game, mode, reset trigger and each progression category covered by the announcement.
The reliable way to understand a wipe is to separate character progress from account-level records. Levels, skills, quests, currency, equipment, inventory, workshop upgrades and crafting access can reset independently from cosmetics, achievements, rankings, battle-pass progress and permanently unlocked rewards.
What a seasonal wipe actually is
A seasonal wipe is a reset of one or more progression tracks when a game starts a new season or reaches a defined reset event. “Wipe” is not a technical standard shared by all extraction shooters. The trigger may be a scheduled season, a major content update, a server launch, a voluntary project or a one-time event.
Most extraction shooters divide progression into at least two layers:

- Character or mode progression: levels, skills, quests, trader reputation, currency, equipment, inventory, workshop upgrades and crafting capabilities.
- Account-level progression: cosmetics, achievements, awards, rankings, battle-pass progress and rewards that have been permanently unlocked.
A reset can clear the first layer while preserving some or all of the second. It can also apply to one character or mode while leaving other profiles untouched. Reading the exact reset list is more useful than relying on the word “wipe.”
What gets wiped?
Character levels and skills
Levels, skill trees and weapon mastery are common reset candidates because they directly affect a character’s power and available options. A game may reset these values for a seasonal character while leaving another profile intact. If a notice says “character progress,” check whether that phrase includes skills, mastery, task progress and reputation or only the visible level number.
Quests, tasks and reputation
Quest chains, task completion and trader reputation can be separate fields. A reset notice may list them individually, as Escape from Tarkov does for Arena’s Ref task progress and trader reputation. Do not assume that finishing a quest once makes it permanently complete unless the announcement explicitly says so.

Currency, equipment and inventory
Money, weapons, armor, consumables and stored inventory are usually tied to the character or mode being reset. They are the most tangible losses because they determine what you can bring into the next raid. Some systems may preserve special rewards or unlock access while deleting the actual items; those are different outcomes.
Workshop and crafting access
Workshop levels, recipes and crafting capabilities can be reset separately from inventory. ARC Raiders’ planned Expedition system, for example, lists workshop and crafting capabilities among the character progress that is lost. A retained cosmetic does not imply that the associated crafting station or recipe remains available.

Cosmetics, achievements and rankings
Cosmetics, awards, achievements and rankings are often treated as account records rather than seasonal character data. They may survive a reset even when the character’s equipment and levels do not. This is a convention, not a guarantee: only the game’s own retention list can establish what carries over.
Do seasonal wipes reset everything?
No. A wipe can be narrow, broad or optional. Use this checklist when reading an announcement:
- Trigger: Is the reset automatic at a season start, tied to a major update, limited to a one-time launch event or initiated by the player?
- Scope: Does it cover the whole account, one character, one mode or a specific server?
- Lost progress: Are levels, skills, quests, currency, equipment, inventory, crafting and workshop upgrades named?
- Retained progress: Are cosmetics, achievements, rankings, rewards, battle-pass progress or unlocks listed as permanent?
- Timing: Is the cadence fixed, approximate or still subject to change?
- Unfinished preparation: Does incomplete project or task progress carry into the next window?
If a category is not stated, treat it as unknown rather than assuming it is protected. “Progress resets” is too vague to answer the practical question of whether your money, skins, quests or recipes survive.
Escape from Tarkov: a seasonal character reset, not an account-wide wipe
Seasonal characters are separate profiles
Battlestate Games’ Patch 1.1.0.0 announcement introduced the Seasons system and the first season, KORD BREACH. It describes Seasonal Characters as independent from PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters. Seasonal-character progression automatically resets every four to six months when a major content update starts a new season.
That wording matters. It is inaccurate to say that all Escape from Tarkov progress wipes every four to six months. The announcement distinguishes the seasonal profile from the PvP Zone and PvE Zone profiles, so the reset’s scope is the seasonal character described by that system.

Seasonal rewards have their own retention rule
Seasonal rewards are unique trader offers unlocked by level or task conditions. Rewards unlocked during KORD BREACH become permanently available across PvP Zone, PvE Zone and PvP Season. Rewards that remain locked when KORD BREACH ends become permanently unobtainable.
This creates two separate questions: whether the seasonal character resets, and whether a reward was unlocked before the season ended. A reset does not automatically erase every reward, while failing to meet a reward’s condition before the deadline can remove access to it permanently.
Battle Pass progression is shared
The announcement also says Battle Pass progression is shared across the named modes. That is a different track from seasonal-character progression. A player can therefore lose seasonal character progress while retaining shared Battle Pass progress and any rewards already unlocked under the stated rules.
Arena has a different reset list
An official Escape from Tarkov Telegram post describes a separate Arena reset. It says character level, skills and weapon mastery, Ref task progress and trader reputation reset. Battle Pass and Tactical Map progress, earned rewards, Armory progress and achievements remain.
The Arena list is mode-specific and should not be generalized to the main game’s seasonal characters. The captured channel page does not establish the post’s publication date, so use the current in-game notice or official channel when checking whether those Arena rules have changed.

ARC Raiders: an optional Expedition reset
Reset by choice, not by force
In a developer post dated October 9, 2025, design director Virgil described the Expedition Project as a voluntary character reset. The studio said it did not intend mandatory wipes and was developing a system that becomes available after a player completes the project.
The post describes a repeating cycle of roughly eight weeks, but it also says the benefits and details were still being finalized and could change. Treat that cadence as a planned design detail, not a permanent guarantee. Check the live game materials before making a decision.
What an Expedition removes
The stated lost categories are character levels, skills, items and inventory, workshop progress and crafting capabilities. These are the resources that shape a character’s current strength and operating capacity.
What an Expedition keeps
Cosmetics, awards, achievements and rankings are listed as retained. The post also says some onboarding steps and features are available from the start after an Expedition. Retention of a cosmetic therefore does not mean retention of the item inventory or workshop state associated with a previous character.

Incomplete projects carry forward
If the Expedition Project is not completed during one window, its incomplete progress carries to the next completion window. This gives players who cannot finish on schedule a way to continue preparing rather than losing the project’s partial progress.

“Players who have less time to dedicate to the game don’t have their progress reset outside of their control.”
That sentence explains the studio’s stated reason for making the system voluntary. It is a design rationale, not a promise that no other future reset system could ever be introduced.

How to check what you will lose before a reset
- Identify the profile. Write down the exact character, mode, server or season named in the notice. A reset affecting a seasonal character may not touch PvP, PvE or another mode.
- Copy the lost list. Separate levels, skills, tasks, reputation, currency, inventory, workshop and crafting into individual rows. Do not combine them under the vague label “progress.”
- Copy the retained list. Record cosmetics, achievements, rankings, rewards, Battle Pass progress and permanent unlocks separately.
- Check deadlines and cadence. Note the announced date, approximate cycle and whether the rule is automatic, one-time or subject to change.
- Finish time-limited unlocks. In Tarkov’s KORD BREACH example, rewards still locked at the season’s end became unobtainable, while unlocked rewards remained available across the named modes.
- Decide whether optional loss is worthwhile. For a voluntary system such as ARC Raiders’ Expedition, compare the reset benefits with the value of your current levels, inventory, workshop and crafting access.
- Recheck the live notice. Patch notes and developer posts can be superseded. Use the current official announcement for operational decisions, especially when the source says details may change.
Common mistakes when interpreting wipes
- Assuming “wipe” means the whole account: Tarkov’s seasonal characters are explicitly separate from PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters.
- Assuming cosmetics prove everything survives: ARC Raiders keeps cosmetics but removes inventory, workshop and crafting capabilities under the described Expedition rules.
- Mixing modes: Arena’s reset list is not the same as the main seasonal-character system.
- Treating a planned cadence as a contract: ARC Raiders’ roughly eight-week cycle was described as subject to change.
- Using an old event as current policy: Hunt: Showdown’s 2019 prelaunch wipe is evidence about that event only.
- Ignoring unlock status: In Tarkov, unlocked seasonal rewards become permanent, while rewards still locked at the end of KORD BREACH become unobtainable.
- Relying on community shorthand: Player discussions often collapse several progression tracks into “everything.” The official lost-and-retained lists are the authoritative distinction.
What “wipe” should mean when you explain a game to someone else
A precise explanation names four things in one sentence: the game and mode, the trigger, the progression that resets and the progression that remains. For example, the documented ARC Raiders system is an optional character reset after an Expedition Project, with levels, skills, inventory, workshop and crafting lost while cosmetics, awards, achievements and rankings remain. That is more useful than saying simply that the game has wipes.
The same discipline prevents overclaiming about titles whose current rules are not established here. Do not transfer Tarkov’s four-to-six-month seasonal cadence, ARC Raiders’ voluntary model or Hunt’s 2019 launch behavior to another extraction shooter without a current official source for that game.
