Sea cucumbers can influence carbon cycling, but the evidence supports a local ecological role—not a quantified global climate solution. As deposit feeders, they ingest surface sediment, digest organic material and microbes, and return processed sediment to the seafloor. This bioturbation changes sediment structure, oxygen penetration, nutrient exchange, microbial activity and, in some settings, microalgal productivity. Those changes are relevant to carbon processing, yet the sources available do not establish how many tonnes of carbon sea cucumbers store, how long any carbon remains buried, or what their global contribution might be.

Their effects are also context dependent. A coastal-sediment experiment found increased ammonium release and bacterial abundance but lower microphytobenthos biomass and total oxygen production when sea cucumbers grazed on surface producers. A 2016 review also reports local increases in seawater alkalinity from feeding and excretion. These are measurable ecosystem mechanisms, not proof that adding or protecting sea cucumbers automatically creates a large, durable ocean carbon sink.

What sea cucumbers do to the seafloor

Most sea cucumbers discussed in this context are benthic deposit feeders. They collect sediment at or just below the seabed, extract organic particles, bacteria, microalgae and other usable material, and expel the remaining mineral-rich sediment. Some species also burrow into sand or mud, moving particles between surface and deeper layers. The combined ingestion, digestion, excretion and movement is called bioturbation or sediment processing.

The 2024 chapter “Sediment processing: The foremost ecological role of tropical deposit-feeding sea cucumbers” describes this activity as a driver of sediment properties, microalgal productivity, nutrient cycling, oxygen profiles and broader benthic biogeochemistry. It also stresses that the magnitude and direction of an effect vary among taxa, feeding behaviors and habitats. Regional-scale consequences remain a stated knowledge gap. Read the 2024 chapter.

Particle movement and sediment structure

Repeated passage of sediment through a sea cucumber can loosen compacted surface layers and redistribute fine and coarse particles. Burrowing can create channels through which oxygenated water reaches deeper sediment, while expelled material can be spread over the surface. The result is not a uniform “cleaning” process: depending on grain size, current speed and animal density, processing may increase mixing, alter settling patterns or move organic particles into different chemical zones.

Oxygen and chemical gradients

Sediment contains steep gradients in oxygen, sulfide, ammonium and other compounds. By disturbing the surface and changing pore spaces, sea cucumbers can alter how far oxygen penetrates and where microbial reactions occur. These shifts affect decomposition and nutrient transformations. A change in oxygen consumption or nutrient release is therefore evidence of altered carbon-related biogeochemistry, but it is not by itself evidence that more carbon has been stored for centuries.

How sediment processing connects to carbon

Carbon enters seabed sediments in dead plankton, detritus, fecal material and locally produced microalgae. Microbes break down part of this material, releasing carbon dioxide and dissolved nutrients; another part may be buried, transported or consumed by animals. Sea cucumbers influence the physical and biological conditions under which these pathways operate.

Pathway 1: Reworking organic matter

Ingesting sediment can redistribute organic particles and expose them to new microbial communities. Faster access to oxygen may accelerate decomposition in one layer, while movement into a less oxygenated layer may change which chemical pathways dominate. Whether this increases net carbon retention depends on the balance between burial, remineralization, resuspension and export. The available sources do not measure that balance at regional or global scale.

Pathway 2: Nutrient recycling and primary production

Excretion returns inorganic nutrients such as ammonium to the water-sediment interface. Those nutrients can support microalgae or other primary producers when light and other conditions are suitable. New production can draw carbon dioxide from seawater, but the carbon may later be respired, eaten, exported or buried. A nutrient flux is therefore an important process measurement, not a direct carbon-storage total.

Pathway 3: Local alkalinity

The 2016 review by Purcell, Conand, Uthicke and Byrne reports that feeding and excretion can increase seawater alkalinity locally, potentially providing local buffering against ocean acidification. Alkalinity affects seawater’s capacity to absorb and chemically store carbon dioxide. The review’s statement concerns local seawater chemistry; it does not demonstrate a material global carbon sink attributable to sea cucumbers. See the 2016 review record.

What a coastal experiment actually measured

A 2012 PLOS ONE study, “Deposit-Feeding Sea Cucumbers Enhance Mineralization and Nutrient Cycling in Organically-Enriched Coastal Sediments,” tested sea cucumbers in organically enriched coastal sediment. Its results illustrate why outcomes must be reported with their setting and measured variable attached.

Measured response Observed direction in the experiment What it means—and does not mean
Ammonium exchange Inorganic nitrogen efflux increased More nitrogen moved from sediment to overlying water under the study conditions; this is not a quantified carbon-burial rate.
Bacterial abundance Increased Microbial activity and decomposition conditions changed; the result does not establish whether total long-term carbon storage rose or fell.
Microphytobenthos biomass Decreased through grazing Surface primary-producer biomass was reduced in the experimental treatment.
Total oxygen production Decreased Lower production followed the reduction in microphytobenthos; this is a local production response, not a global oxygen or carbon-cycle estimate.

The study is useful because it records both stimulatory and suppressive effects in the same system. Sea cucumbers enhanced mineralization and nutrient exchange while grazing reduced an important group of surface producers. Calling them universally beneficial “carbon cleaners” would ignore these measured trade-offs. Read the full PLOS ONE study.

Sea cucumbers’ wider ecosystem roles

Carbon cycling is only one part of their ecological importance. The 2016 review synthesizes several functions, while cautioning that their strength differs by species and ecosystem.

Nitrogen and phosphorus recycling

By processing detritus-rich sediment and releasing dissolved compounds, sea cucumbers help move nitrogen and phosphorus between sediment and water. This can support or alter benthic and pelagic productivity. The net effect depends on whether nutrients are retained locally, exported by currents or consumed by other organisms.

Food-web transfer

Sea cucumbers consume detritus and microalgae and can transfer that material to predators when they are eaten. Their waste also becomes food for microbes and small invertebrates. Removing abundant animals can therefore affect pathways that are not visible in a carbon-budget calculation.

Hosts for symbionts

The 2016 review reports more than 200 species of parasitic and commensal symbionts from seven phyla associated with sea cucumbers. That figure is a 2016 review statistic, not a current global census. Symbiotic relationships add biodiversity and may influence nutrient exchanges within the animal’s body and surrounding sediment.

Prey and habitat interactions

Sea cucumbers are prey for other taxa and interact with organisms living on or around the seabed. Their burrows, feeding tracks and processed deposits can modify small-scale habitat conditions. These effects can cascade through benthic communities even when no change in carbon storage is measured.

Why effects differ among species and habitats

There is no single sea-cucumber effect that applies to every coastline. Comparisons should keep the following variables separate.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Why it changes the result
Feeding and burrowing behavior Does the species graze the surface, ingest deeper sediment or regularly bury into sand and mud? Different behaviors move particles and oxygen through different depths.
Habitat and sediment type Is the site muddy, sandy, reef-associated, sheltered or exposed to strong currents? Grain size, permeability and hydrodynamics control pore-water exchange and particle transport.
Organic enrichment Is the sediment naturally low in organic matter or enriched by aquaculture, runoff or decomposition? High organic loading can intensify oxygen demand and nutrient release.
Measured response Were researchers measuring ammonium, oxygen, bacteria, producer biomass, alkalinity or carbon burial? Each metric describes a different process and cannot substitute for a storage estimate.
Evidence scale Was the result from a tank, a plot, a local field study or a regional assessment? Small experiments reveal mechanisms; they do not automatically scale to coastlines or oceans.

The 2024 specialist chapter specifically identifies differences among taxa and uncertainty about regional-scale effects. A result observed in an organically enriched coastal experiment should therefore be described as a response under those conditions, not as a universal property of all sea cucumbers.

What overexploitation could remove

More than 70 sea cucumber species were commercially exploited according to the 2016 review, and at least 12 exploited species regularly bury into sand and mud. Both numbers are reported for that review and year. Intensive harvesting can reduce the abundance and size structure of animals performing sediment processing. The review warns that overexploitation is likely to weaken several linked functions:

These are the review’s synthesis and likely consequences, not measurements that apply identically to every fishery. Local evidence is needed to determine which functions are most important at a particular site. The review concludes: “Ecosystem-based fisheries management needs to consider the importance of sea cucumbers in marine ecosystems and implement regulatory measures to safeguard their ecological roles.”

Why a local effect is not yet a global carbon credit

The ocean carbon cycle is controlled by interacting physical, chemical and biological processes. A broad 2026 synthesis by Resplandy, Lévy and Bopp argues that physics and chemistry are primary controls on the ocean carbon sink and cautions that conservation narratives do not automatically support strong climate-mitigation claims. Their article is broad ocean-carbon context, not a sea-cucumber experiment. Read the 2026 synthesis.

Similarly, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency’s study published on 26 August 2026 examines European seabed carbon stocks, accumulation, disturbance and management scenarios. It addresses a seabed-wide knowledge gap, not a species-specific sea-cucumber storage estimate. Read the European seabed study.

To claim a durable sea-cucumber carbon benefit, researchers would need more than measurements of feeding or nutrient flux. They would have to quantify carbon inputs, burial or export, remineralization, disturbance, residence time and the fate of any additional alkalinity. Those quantities would need to be measured across representative habitats and then scaled with population density and environmental conditions.

What is established and what remains unknown

Well-supported conclusions

  • Sea cucumbers process and redistribute sediment.
  • That activity changes local sediment structure, oxygen conditions, microbial activity and nutrient exchange.
  • Some species and settings show local alkalinity increases associated with feeding and excretion.
  • Sea cucumbers participate in food webs and host diverse symbiotic communities.
  • Removing them can reduce ecological functions where they are abundant and active.

Not established by the available evidence

  • A global or regional number for carbon stored because of sea cucumbers.
  • How long sea-cucumber-associated carbon remains buried.
  • A universal direction of carbon change across species, sediments and climates.
  • A verified carbon-credit methodology based solely on sea-cucumber abundance or restoration.

The most defensible description is therefore “local sediment engineers with carbon-cycle relevance.” They can change processes that matter to carbon, but the cited evidence does not support treating them as a standalone, quantified climate-mitigation technology.

How to evaluate a claim about sea cucumbers and carbon

  1. Identify the measured endpoint. Check whether the claim concerns carbon burial, dissolved inorganic carbon, alkalinity, oxygen, ammonium, bacterial abundance or producer biomass.
  2. Check the setting. Record species, sediment type, organic loading, depth, season and whether the evidence came from a laboratory, enclosure or open field.
  3. Separate process from stock. A higher nutrient flux or faster mineralization rate describes a process; it does not equal a larger long-term carbon stock.
  4. Look for duration and fate. Ask whether carbon was tracked after export, respiration, resuspension and burial, and for how long.
  5. Demand scale-appropriate evidence. Regional or global claims require population and habitat data, not extrapolation from one coastal experiment.

For tropical sediment processing, the 2024 chapter in The World of Sea Cucumbers: Challenges, Advances, and Innovations provides a specialist treatment. The 2012 PLOS ONE experiment is useful for seeing how nutrient, microbial, algal and oxygen responses can move in different directions within one enriched coastal system.

The evidence-based takeaway

Protecting sea cucumbers can help maintain sediment reworking, nutrient recycling, food-web links and local chemical conditions. Those functions may influence carbon cycling, but no cited source supplies a sea-cucumber-specific regional or global storage total. Until studies measure carbon fate and residence time at meaningful geographic scales, sea cucumbers should be valued as part of functioning marine ecosystems—not marketed as a proven standalone solution for removing climate-warming carbon dioxide.
