A screen protector works by putting a replaceable layer between a display’s cover glass and the objects that could scratch or strike it. It can take some surface damage in the screen’s place, but it cannot guarantee that the display will survive a drop. Glass protectors may also be chemically strengthened; film and liquid products protect through different materials and constructions.
What a screen protector does
The simplest job of a protector is separation: keys, grit, and other abrasive objects meet the protector rather than the device’s original cover glass. If the added layer scratches or cracks, it may be easier to replace than the display. But a cracked protector does not show whether the screen underneath is unharmed. The same impact can damage both layers, depending on its force, location, and the device’s design.
A protector covers the display face, not every vulnerable part of a device. A case can add protection around the edges and back, so the two accessories address different exposed surfaces.
How chemically strengthened glass resists damage
Glass can break when a flaw at its surface is pulled open by tension. In ion-exchange strengthening, smaller sodium ions near the glass surface are replaced by larger potassium ions. The larger ions crowd the surface, creating compressive stress that counteracts some of the tension that could otherwise extend a flaw. This improves resistance; it does not make glass unbreakable.

Corning describes its own ion-exchange bath as approximately 400°C, but that is a detail of the company’s manufacturing process, not a consumer instruction. Its explanation of the process is at Corning’s Gorilla Glass FAQ.
How the main protector types differ

The PET/TPU and liquid-protector descriptions above are manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparison of every product. More generally, compare the specific protector’s scratch and impact claims, thickness, touch feel, clarity, coverage, case fit, installation method, and any privacy or anti-glare feature you want.

Why scratch claims do not predict drop survival
Hardness is relevant to scratch resistance; retained strength is more relevant to breakage. They are different properties, so a hardness number alone cannot establish how well a protector will handle a fall. Test results also depend on the test method and the product tested.
For example, Corning reported in 2019 that its Amplify screen protectors had up to five times better scratch performance and 25 percent fewer visible scratches than the leading glass alternative in its lab comparison. Those are Corning’s product-specific results, not a general statistic for screen protectors. Likewise, Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 page reports 0.4% versus 1.1% damaged surface area in a purse-tumble abrasion test against competitive aluminosilicate glasses. That was a cover-glass component test, not a comparison of screen protectors or a drop test.

Impact conditions matter too. An edge or corner strike, a rough surface, device design, and existing flaws can all affect whether glass breaks. Corning notes that rough surfaces such as concrete and asphalt better represent many real-world breakage conditions than smooth test surfaces; results from its test setup should not be generalized to every phone or protector. How to choose one for your device
- Start with the exact model. Check that the protector is made for your phone or tablet, including its screen shape and sensor and camera openings.
- Check coverage and case fit. Look at how much of the active display the protector covers and whether your case may press against its edges.
- Choose by use and feel. Glass offers a more glass-like touch; flexible films and liquid coatings have different feel and impact limits. Consider whether privacy or anti-glare treatment matters to you.
- Treat performance claims as product-specific. Look for the test conditions behind a scratch or impact claim rather than assuming one material or hardness figure predicts drop protection.
- For drop concerns, consider the whole device. A protector covers the front surface; a case can add coverage around the edges and back. Neither guarantees survival.
How to install a protector cleanly
- Clean and dry the screen, following the protector maker’s directions.
- Remove dust from the display; even a small particle can interfere with the fit.
- Align the protector carefully, using its installation frame if one is included.
- Press as instructed so the adhesive bonds to the display.
Cleaning, dust removal, alignment, and bonding are common installation considerations; exact steps vary by product. ZAGG’s guidance describes these steps for its own protectors, so follow the instructions supplied with the protector you install.

What to do if the protector cracks
Replace a damaged protector when appropriate, but do not assume the display beneath it is intact. Check the screen itself for cracks or touch and display problems. The protector may have absorbed some damage, but the impact that broke it may also have reached the device’s cover glass.

Corning says Gorilla Glass has appeared on more than 8 billion devices, a cumulative company figure whose FAQ does not give a publication year. That figure describes Corning’s glass, not the number or effectiveness of screen protectors.
