Scientists cannot observe a quantum system with literally zero effect: the interaction that reveals information also produces quantum back-action, changing the system’s state. The practical goal is to make that change small, predictable, and relevant only to variables the experiment can tolerate.
Lasers help by controlling how strongly light interacts with matter. A weak probe gives little information in each interaction but causes less state change. A far-detuned, dispersive probe can read an atomic ensemble through a light-induced phase shift instead of relying on resonant absorption. Quantum-nondemolition (QND) designs go further by repeatedly measuring a chosen observable while avoiding the usual disturbance to that same observable. None of these methods makes every aspect of the quantum state immune to disturbance.
Why measuring a quantum system changes it
In classical physics, a thermometer or camera can often be treated as a passive observer. In quantum physics, measurement is an interaction. The detector, probe field, or auxiliary atom becomes correlated with the system, and the information that escapes into the environment changes the system’s state. This is called back-action.

Even a measurement described as “non-destructive” therefore has to be understood operationally. It may preserve a particular energy, photon number, or other observable well enough for the experiment, while changing conjugate variables or other parts of the state.

Volz and colleagues state the general principle directly: “A measurement necessarily changes the quantum state being measured, a phenomenon known as back-action.” Their 2011 experiment was narrower than a claim of zero disturbance: it measured a single atom’s internal state without energy exchange inside an optical cavity. Read the original account in Nature.
The key design question is not whether disturbance exists, but which observable matters, how much information is needed, and what back-action the experiment can remove, redirect, or model.
How a laser can act as a gentle quantum probe
Detuning the probe from resonance
Atoms absorb light most strongly near a resonant transition. A dispersive measurement instead uses a laser whose frequency is far from that resonance. The light then interacts with the atoms primarily by acquiring an atom-dependent phase and frequency response, rather than by repeatedly being absorbed and re-emitted as the readout mechanism.

In the 2023 Bose–Einstein-condensate experiment by Altuntaş and Spielman, the far-from-resonant probe interacted with an ultracold atomic ensemble. The outgoing light carried information about the atoms, and the researchers measured the resulting change in the condensate with a Ramsey interferometer. They tracked both the interferometric phase and the contrast, which indicates how much coherence remained. The publication is available from Communications Physics; the NIST record is at NIST.
Information versus disturbance
Increasing probe intensity or interaction time generally improves the information in the detected light. It can also increase spontaneous scattering and other back-action. Scattered photons carry information about the atoms into uncontrolled directions, reducing coherence even if the main transmitted beam is measured carefully. A far-detuned laser is therefore not harmless; it changes the balance between useful signal and unwanted disturbance.

The experiment’s central result is a calibrated trade-off. The observed phase and contrast changes were compared with a measurement model that includes scattering. Such a model lets scientists determine whether a loss of contrast is the intrinsic quantum cost of extracting information or an avoidable technical problem.
Why interferometry reveals a small change
A Ramsey interferometer prepares a coherent superposition, allows its components to evolve, and then converts their relative phase into a measurable population signal. A probe-induced phase shift changes that signal. Reduced contrast shows that the superposition has become less coherent. Measuring both quantities gives more information than recording atom loss alone: an experiment can distinguish a reversible phase response from irreversible decoherence or loss.

Weak measurement
A weak measurement deliberately limits the interaction strength. One result contains only limited information, so the conditional state update is correspondingly small. Repeating the interaction or averaging many outcomes can build a useful estimate while distributing the disturbance over many steps. Altuntaş and Spielman summarize the principle as: “Weak measurements produce only limited information about the system, and as a result only minimally change the system’s state.” This is a statement about information per interaction, not a guarantee that a long sequence leaves the system unchanged.
Quantum nondemolition measurement
A QND measurement is defined by the observable it protects. The interaction is engineered so that measuring an observable does not add the usual disturbance to that same observable, allowing repeated measurements of it. Other variables can still change, and the system can still become entangled with the probe.
For example, a photon-number measurement may preserve photon number while changing the field’s phase uncertainty. A measurement that avoids energy exchange may still alter the atom’s coherence. QND is therefore not synonymous with “no back-action,” “weak,” or “low loss.”

Low-loss or energy-preserving measurement
An apparatus may be low-loss because it rarely removes particles, or energy-preserving because it does not change an internal energy eigenstate. Those are useful engineering properties, but neither alone establishes QND behavior. The protected quantity, the allowed state change, and the repeatability of the measurement must be specified.
What the main laser and cavity approaches measure
| Approach | System and observable | Information per interaction | Typical back-action or limitation | Can the same quantity be measured repeatedly? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dispersive condensate probe | Ultracold atomic ensemble; phase and coherence inferred with Ramsey interferometry | Probe light acquires an atom-dependent phase; signal grows with interaction strength | Spontaneous scattering, coherence loss, beam inhomogeneity, and weak probe-light reflections that can form an optical lattice | Possible when the ensemble remains sufficiently coherent and the probe is calibrated |
| Weak photonic-qubit measurement | Photonic-qubit state | Continuously variable, limited information in each readout | Partial state collapse and detector inefficiency | Yes, by using successive weak interactions, with cumulative disturbance |
| Cavity-assisted single-atom readout | Internal state of one atom | State information encoded in the cavity response | Result is framed around avoiding energy exchange, not eliminating all state change | Potentially, provided the cavity interaction and atomic state remain controlled |
| Single-photon cavity QND detection | Presence of zero or one photon, inferred from an atomic phase shift | One atom acts as an interferometric probe of the cavity field | Original demonstration is restricted to states containing zero or one photon | Designed for non-destructive detection in that limited photon-number regime |
| Repeated QND photon counting | Photon number in a cavity | Atoms pass through the cavity and progressively sharpen the inferred number | Each probe atom and the cavity must remain controlled; information accumulates over successive passages | Yes, the method’s purpose is repeated narrowing of the photon-number distribution |
The studies above address different systems and observables, so the table is a map of design choices, not a head-to-head performance ranking. The weak-qubit experiment is described in Physical Review Letters. The single-photon experiment appears in Nature, and the repeated photon-counting work is reported at Nature.
How scientists control unwanted disturbance in a real experiment
Make the optical field uniform
A probe beam that is brighter in one part of the cloud than another measures different atoms with different strengths. That spatial inhomogeneity can create extra excitation, heating, or dephasing that is not part of the intended measurement model. Beam shaping, careful alignment, and independent calibration reduce this technical contribution.
Suppress back-reflected light
Weak reflections from windows, optics, or other surfaces can interfere with the incoming probe and produce a shallow optical lattice. Even a weak lattice can drive motion or excitation in an ultracold sample. The condensate study explicitly controls this effect because otherwise the reflected light could be mistaken for quantum back-action.
Separate scattering from collisions and loss
Light-induced collisions and particle loss can alter the signal without representing the same decoherence mechanism as spontaneous scattering. Experiments therefore monitor atom number, interferometric phase, and contrast together. In the condensate work, light-induced collisions had limited impact on the Ramsey data after characterization, but that conclusion belongs to those operating conditions rather than to every laser probe.

Use a quantitative back-action model
A credible “non-destructive” claim requires a model that predicts both the information gained and the state change. Researchers vary probe strength, compare measured phase and contrast with the model, and check whether technical effects scale differently from intrinsic quantum terms. Without those controls, a low-loss trace could simply reflect an insensitive detector or an unrecognized optical artifact.

Measuring a single atom in a cavity
The 2011 cavity experiment demonstrated internal-state measurement without energy exchange. The cavity enhanced the atom’s effect on the light, so the state could be inferred from the optical response rather than by absorbing a resonant photon. Its narrow claim is important: avoiding energy exchange does not mean the atom’s complete quantum state is untouched. See the Nature report.
Seeing one photon without destroying it
In the 1999 experiment by Nogues and colleagues, an atomic interferometer detected the phase shift caused by a cavity field. The method was presented for states containing zero or one photon. It illustrates how an auxiliary atom can read a field indirectly, while the cavity photon remains available for subsequent evolution. The scope of the result should not be expanded to arbitrary multiphoton states or to zero disturbance of every field variable. The paper is at Nature.
Progressive photon-number collapse
Guerlin and colleagues sent probe atoms through a cavity repeatedly. Each atom supplied another piece of evidence about the photon number, and the inferred probability distribution progressively narrowed. This is a practical demonstration of information accumulating through successive interactions rather than arriving in one destructive readout. Details are reported in Nature.

Many-body Hamiltonians
QND reasoning also applies to complex quantum simulators. A 2020 proposal for measuring a many-body Hamiltonian explicitly models how the measurement back-action changes the many-body state. It shows why the problem does not disappear when the system has many particles: the protected quantity, coupling, and resulting state update still have to be specified. The paper is in Nature Communications. It should be read as a proposed method and model, not as evidence that every such measurement is a routine laboratory procedure.

Quantum Zeno effect
A 2026 study used an optical trap as a measurement pulse and monitored atomic loss to observe a quantum Zeno effect in a single atom’s spatial motion. Frequent measurements altered the atom’s subsequent evolution, slowing the transition that would occur without those interventions. This is a related example of measurement-controlled dynamics, not a direct demonstration of a gentle dispersive laser probe. The report appears in Nature Communications.
What “without changing it too much” means in practice
Scientists usually define acceptable disturbance against a specific task. If the goal is to estimate atom number, a small phase shift may be acceptable while particle loss is not. If the goal is to preserve photon number for later experiments, phase diffusion may be the tolerated trade-off. If coherence is the resource, contrast loss is the critical metric even when no atoms or photons are removed.
- Specify the observable: state whether the experiment protects photon number, energy, an internal-state population, a Hamiltonian, or another quantity.
- Specify the information target: determine how accurately the observable must be inferred and how many probe interactions are available.
- Measure more than one symptom: track phase, contrast, population, heating, and loss where relevant.
- Calibrate technical effects: test beam uniformity, reflections, frequency detuning, detector efficiency, and collision channels independently.
- Report the operating regime: probe intensity, detuning, interaction time, atom or photon number, and repetition rate determine the trade-off.
There is no universal percentage for how much a laser changes a quantum system. The result depends on the system, observable, probe strength, detection method, and technical controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA separate benchmark: back-action-evading measurements
A 1995 Physical Review Letters experiment reported a conditional variance of 1.8 dB below shot noise in a repeated back-action-evading measurement. That number belongs to a distinct optical experiment; it is not a performance figure for the 2023 Bose–Einstein-condensate laser probe. It is useful as a reminder that specialized measurement schemes can suppress back-action in a selected quadrature or observable under defined conditions, rather than abolishing quantum measurement limits altogether. The abstract is available at Physical Review Letters.
Can a quantum system ever be measured without disturbance?
Not in the unrestricted sense. A measurement must create a correlation between the system and something that records information, and that correlation changes the quantum description. What scientists can do is make each interaction weak, choose an observable that is compatible with repeated readout, use a cavity or interferometer to amplify a small phase response, and remove technical sources of extra excitation or loss.
The most accurate description is therefore conditional: a laser measurement can be nearly non-destructive for a chosen purpose and operating regime, while still causing scattering, decoherence, phase noise, or changes in other observables. That controlled, quantified compromise is what lets researchers observe quantum systems repeatedly without overwhelming the behavior they are trying to study.
