Scientists forecast volcanic eruptions by combining measurements that reveal how a volcano’s surface moves, what gases it releases, how earthquakes change, and how other monitored signals evolve. Ground deformation and gas data are valuable because they probe different parts of the volcanic system, but neither is a stand-alone countdown to an eruption. Swelling can have several causes, gas chemistry varies among volcanoes, and satellites may miss short-lived or poorly observed changes.
What a volcanic forecast actually means
A volcanic forecast is an evidence-based assessment that activity is becoming more or less likely, not a promise that an eruption will occur at a particular hour. Analysts compare present observations with a volcano’s known behavior, past unrest and current alert criteria. They look for coherent changes across monitoring streams rather than reacting to one unusual reading.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (USGS) summarizes the role of deformation this way: “Ground deformation measurements provide an important indicator about what is happening beneath a volcano.” The wording matters: deformation is an indicator that must be interpreted, not a direct image of magma.
USGS guidance on satellite monitoring makes the same distinction for remote sensing: “While remote sensing data will never replace ground-based monitoring, a joint observation strategy provides a powerful means of assessing volcanic activity before, during, and after hazardous eruptions.”

How ground deformation reveals subsurface change
GNSS and GPS stations track position
Continuous Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations repeatedly calculate the three-dimensional position of fixed points. GPS is one example of a GNSS system. By comparing positions over time, scientists can detect movement of a station by millimeters to centimeters, depending on the instrument, processing and local conditions. A pattern in several stations can show whether an area is expanding, contracting or shifting laterally.
Station coverage depends on where instruments have been installed. A dense network can resolve a detailed deformation pattern; a sparse network may detect broad movement while leaving its exact source uncertain. GNSS records continuously, so it can capture rapid changes between satellite overpasses.
Tiltmeters measure changes in slope
A borehole tiltmeter detects very small changes in the angle of the ground at a local site. If the surface near the instrument tilts, the direction and rate of that tilt can help constrain where pressure or fluid movement is occurring. Tiltmeters are highly sensitive but represent conditions at their installation point, so they are interpreted with nearby GNSS, seismic and other data.

InSAR maps displacement over broad areas
Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) compares radar observations acquired on different dates. The difference between scenes can produce a map of surface displacement across a large area, including places without ground instruments. Repeated maps can reveal a broad inflation or subsidence pattern and help identify areas that deserve closer inspection.

InSAR displacement is measured along the satellite’s line of sight. A single viewing geometry does not directly separate vertical motion from north–south or east–west motion. Analysts may combine ascending and descending satellite passes, ground observations and deformation models to estimate the underlying movements.
Radar interpretation is also affected by acquisition timing, vegetation, atmospheric water vapor and changes to the surface. A map can contain gaps or artifacts where the radar signal does not remain coherent. Satellite revisit intervals are not uniform, so a short-lived acceleration may occur between observations.
Inflation and deflation: useful patterns, not simple answers
Inflation
Inflation describes outward swelling or uplift of the ground. It can occur when magma accumulates in a reservoir or when pressure changes underground. A pattern of stations moving away from a center, combined with uplift and other evidence, may indicate pressurization. The geometry helps scientists estimate the depth and location of a source, but the result is a model rather than a direct view of molten rock.

Deflation
Deflation describes subsidence or contraction. It can occur when magma leaves a reservoir, when pressure is released during an eruption or intrusion, or when underground fluids redistribute. Deflation therefore does not automatically mean that an eruption has ended, just as inflation does not prove that one is imminent.

Other causes of movement
The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory notes that ground movement can continue for long periods without an eruption. Faults can generate both earthquakes and deformation, and hydrothermal fluids can change pressure or cause surface motion. Seasonal hydrology, landslides and local ground instability can also complicate a signal. Scientists test competing explanations against the location, timing, shape and rate of deformation and against independent observations.
What volcanic-gas measurements add
Gas monitoring supplies geochemical evidence that deformation cannot provide. Instruments and field sampling can track the composition and emission rate of gases released from vents, fumaroles, diffuse soil areas or volcanic plumes. USGS’s 2024 recommendations for volcano monitoring include a dedicated volcanic-gas chapter because changes in gas composition and output are measurable phenomena used in assessing activity.
As magma rises or the plumbing system opens, pressure, temperature and pathways for gas release can change. A shift in the mixture or amount of gas may therefore indicate that the system is evolving. The meaning depends on the volcano, the monitored vent, weather and hydrologic conditions, instrument calibration and the history of that site.

There is no single gas species, concentration or trend that serves as a universal eruption threshold for every volcano. The available evidence supports treating gas observations as one stream of information, not applying a cross-volcano rule such as “a certain reading means an eruption in a fixed number of days.”

How scientists combine deformation and gas data
Analysts seek agreement among independent signals. A typical interpretation asks whether the observations are accelerating, spatially consistent and similar to previous episodes at that volcano.
| Measurement | What it records | How it helps | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| GNSS/GPS | Position changes at installed stations through time | Shows three-dimensional motion and its rate at network sites | Coverage is limited to station locations |
| Borehole tilt | Small changes in ground slope at a local site | Detects subtle, local changes in pressure or fluid movement | Represents a local measurement and can be sensitive to site conditions |
| InSAR | Radar line-of-sight displacement between satellite acquisitions | Maps broad areas, including regions without instruments | Revisit timing, vegetation, atmosphere and viewing geometry affect interpretation |
| Gas observations | Gas composition and emission behavior | Adds chemical evidence about changes in the volcanic system | No universal gas threshold or precursor pattern applies to all volcanoes |
For example, a sustained uplift pattern at several GNSS stations, matching tilt changes and a concurrent shift in gas emissions, would generally be more concerning than an isolated station jump. Analysts would still check seismicity, the volcano’s history, weather and possible fault or hydrothermal explanations before changing an assessment.
Seismicity provides another independent test
Earthquakes and tremor can indicate that rock, magma or fluids are moving. Deformation is most useful when interpreted with seismic activity, gas emissions and other indicators, according to USGS monitoring guidance. A mismatch is informative too: deformation without changing seismicity may suggest a different process from deformation accompanied by escalating shallow earthquakes.

Each volcano has its own plumbing, background activity and response to intrusions. Scientists compare current rates and spatial patterns with previous unrest at that volcano, then use physical models to estimate possible source depth, volume or pressure change. These models contain assumptions and uncertainties; they narrow possibilities rather than deliver certainty.

What a monitoring workflow looks like
- Collect continuous and scheduled observations. GNSS and tiltmeters stream data where installed. Satellites acquire radar scenes when their orbits and schedules allow. Gas teams sample or operate analyzers at selected sites, while seismic networks record earthquakes and tremor.
- Quality-check the measurements. Analysts identify instrument drift, power or communication failures, atmospheric effects, vegetation-related radar loss, weather influences and other nonvolcanic sources.
- Map the deformation pattern. They examine direction, rate and spatial extent, then compare GNSS, tilt and InSAR results. A line-of-sight radar change is not treated as purely vertical without additional geometry or observations.
- Evaluate gas changes in context. Composition and emission trends are compared with the normal range for that vent or volcano, accounting for sampling conditions and instrument performance.
- Compare with seismic and surface observations. Earthquake locations, depths, magnitudes, tremor, thermal changes, plume behavior and visible activity can support or challenge a deformation-and-gas interpretation.
- Assess scenarios and uncertainty. Possible explanations include magma intrusion, reservoir pressurization, hydrothermal-fluid movement, faulting or surface processes. Scientists estimate which scenario best fits all evidence and what observations would distinguish them.
- Communicate an alert assessment. Observatories publish updates and hazard information when the evidence warrants a change. The assessment can rise, remain stable or decline as new data arrive.
Why ground and satellite observations complement each other
Ground instruments provide high-frequency measurements at known locations. They can reveal rapid changes and continue operating through intervals when satellites do not pass overhead. Their weakness is limited spatial coverage and the practical difficulty of installing and maintaining equipment in steep, remote or hazardous terrain.
InSAR supplies wide-area context and can discover deformation outside an existing station network. Its limitations are equally important: satellite acquisition timing is intermittent, radar sees displacement only along its viewing direction, and vegetation or changing atmospheric water vapor can degrade the result. Remote sensing therefore complements observatory instruments rather than replacing them.
Neither approach guarantees a fixed warning interval. Satellite revisit schedules and the evolution of each volcanic episode determine when a change becomes visible. The available evidence does not support a general statement such as “deformation predicts an eruption X days in advance.”

- “The ground is swelling, so an eruption is certain.” Inflation has multiple possible causes and can occur without an eruption. Look for corroboration and the pattern’s evolution.
- “One gas reading crosses a universal danger line.” Gas behavior is volcano-specific; no single threshold applies everywhere.
- “An InSAR color fringe is a vertical uplift map.” InSAR measures line-of-sight displacement. Additional viewing geometries or ground data may be needed to resolve vertical and horizontal components.
- “No satellite change means no unrest.” A satellite may not have acquired a recent scene, or atmospheric and vegetation effects may obscure movement. Ground networks and other observations remain essential.
- “A long period of deformation guarantees an eruption later.” Yellowstone monitoring documentation describes movement that can persist for long periods without an eruption.
- “A general article provides the current alert level.” Alert status is volatile. For a specific volcano, consult its responsible official observatory and current notices.
What readers should take away
Ground deformation tells scientists how the surface is moving and helps constrain pressure or mass changes beneath a volcano. Gas measurements add chemical and emission evidence. Together with seismicity, visual observations, thermal data and a volcano’s history, they support a reasoned forecast.
The strongest interpretation comes from several independent signals that change coherently in space and time. Swelling, subsidence or a gas anomaly alone can have non-eruptive explanations, and satellite observations have coverage and viewing limitations. Forecasting is therefore a continuing process of updating probabilities and hazard assessments as new measurements arrive, not a deterministic countdown.
