Researchers recreated nanoscale coatings inspired by fruit flies’ corneas using Retinin protein and waxes. In a 2020 Nature study, the team found that the coating’s shape influenced its function: patterns of distinct protrusions performed better at reducing reflection, while partly merged structures performed better at resisting adhesion. This was a laboratory demonstration, not a commercially available coating.
How the fruit fly-inspired coating was made
The study focused on nanostructures found on the corneas of Drosophila, a genus that includes fruit flies. The researchers identified Retinin protein and corneal waxes as building blocks of those natural structures, then used synthetic Retinin with waxes to produce artificial coatings with similar nanoscale patterns.
The team described the pattern-forming process using a reaction-diffusion model associated with Alan Turing’s activator-inhibitor framework. In that explanation, Retinin acts as the activator and wax as the inhibitor. The framework describes how a pattern can form; it does not mean the artificial coating is alive.

The researchers compared coatings with different surface morphologies. Their results showed a trade-off in the measured functions, rather than one pattern being best for every purpose:

That distinction matters when interpreting the work: the preferred pattern depends on whether the goal is to reduce reflection or reduce adhesion. The comparison does not establish how either pattern would perform in a finished commercial lens, implant, or textile.
What was demonstrated—and what remains prospective
The study demonstrated a way to engineer functional nanostructured coatings from Retinin and waxes. The authors’ abstract describes their combined reverse- and forward-engineering approach as “a way to economically produce functional nanostructured coatings from biodegradable materials.” That is a statement about the research approach, not evidence of an off-the-shelf product or a completed manufacturing supply chain.

Contact lenses, medical implants, and textiles have been discussed as possible application areas. The cited work establishes a laboratory coating demonstration; it does not establish commercial availability, regulatory approval, clinical performance, or adoption in those sectors.

How durable was the experimental coating?
Contemporaneous reporting in Chemistry World said the coating remained stable after 20 hours of washing, but was damaged by detergent or scratching. Treat that as a specific report about the experiment, not a standardized durability rating or a guarantee for other substrates and uses.

The same reporting described deposition on glass, plastic, wood, paper, and metal. These reported substrates do not by themselves show that the coating is suitable for every product made from those materials.
