Scientists do not recover a complete film of a mosasaur’s life. They assemble a bounded explanation from different traces, each of which answers a different behavioral question. Preserved stomach contents can show what an individual actually swallowed. Tooth marks and broken bones can record physical contact, feeding, or scavenging, but usually require careful attribution. Healed injuries show that an animal survived damage for at least some time. Chemical growth patterns in teeth can indicate repeated changes in water use or movement during the animal’s life.
The strongest interpretations begin with the observation itself, then separate what the trace demonstrates from what it merely suggests. A fossil may establish “bone with tooth damage,” support “an interaction consistent with an attack,” and still leave the attacker, timing, motive, and frequency uncertain. That distinction is how paleontologists turn incomplete fossils into testable behavior hypotheses without pretending to know every event.
What counts as behavioral evidence in a mosasaur fossil?
A behavior claim is only as strong as the connection between a trace and the action that produced it. Paleontologists therefore work up an evidence ladder:

- Observation: describe the physical feature without interpretation, such as a row of grooves on a paddle bone, a fractured jaw, or prey bones inside a rib cage.
- Immediate interpretation: identify the process most consistent with the feature, such as tooth contact, ingestion, or healing after trauma.
- Behavioral inference: propose an action, for example feeding, fighting, cannibalism, or movement between water bodies.
- Qualification: state what remains unknown, including the attacker’s identity, whether the victim was alive, and whether the event was typical.
Five tests keep these steps separate. Directness asks whether a trace records ingestion itself or acts as a proxy. Timing asks whether it belongs to a single event or accumulated over months. Attribution asks whether a particular species or individual made it. Scope asks whether the evidence comes from one specimen or a repeated pattern. Alternative explanations test feeding, scavenging, postmortem damage, burial processes, and other possibilities.

The U.S. National Park Service uses this approach when it presents fighting, cannibalism, and live birth as interpretations of fossil observations, with some explicitly described as possibilities rather than established facts.
Stomach contents provide the clearest record of an individual meal
What an actual fossil meal can show
When identifiable prey remains occur inside a well-preserved mosasaur body cavity, they are the most direct dietary evidence available for that individual. The Natural History Museum in London notes that some specimens preserve stomach contents, including remains of other marine reptiles. Such a find demonstrates that the mosasaur swallowed that prey, or at least swallowed the preserved portion of it.
It does not reconstruct the whole hunt. A meal may be unusual, opportunistic, or the only part that survived digestion and burial. One stomach-content specimen therefore cannot establish the normal diet of an entire species, the chase strategy, or whether the prey was killed before ingestion.
Examples of prey and cautions about preservation
A Lund University thesis record compiled reports of fish, cephalopods, bivalves, turtles, birds, other mosasaurs, and plesiosaurs in mosasaur stomach contents. In one Mosasaurus example, corroded bone fragments were identified as turtle bones. Metallic nodules associated with those fragments were interpreted as products of burial rather than undigested food, illustrating why every object in a fossilized body cavity needs independent geological and anatomical evaluation.

Stomach contents can also disappear entirely. Soft tissue, dissolved bones, and disturbed body cavities leave no obvious trace, so an empty specimen is not evidence that the animal had not eaten recently.
Jaw mechanics and teeth broaden the dietary picture
A hinged lower jaw allowed mosasaurs to open their mouths widely, a mechanical feature consistent with swallowing substantial prey. Tooth shape adds a second, indirect line of evidence. Smithsonian Ocean explains that sharp teeth are suited to cutting or tearing flesh, whereas blunt, bulbous teeth are consistent with crushing hard prey. These forms indicate feeding adaptations, not a preserved record of a particular meal.
The Natural History Museum has suggested that a reinforced snout in Tylosaurus may have helped it ram prey. That is a hypothesis based on anatomy, not demonstrated behavior; the fossil does not preserve the impact itself. The distinction matters because the same robust structure could have had more than one function.

Bite marks and damaged bones record contact, not automatically an attack
How a tooth trace is evaluated
A bite-like groove becomes more informative when several features agree: its position on the bone, its cross-sectional shape, spacing, depth, and correspondence with a plausible tooth row. A cluster on a vulnerable body region may fit an attack, while damage on a carcass may fit feeding or scavenging. Researchers also ask whether the bone was still fresh when damaged and whether the trace cuts across earlier surface features.

The National Park Service describes bite marks and damaged paddles in mosasaur fossils as evidence consistent with mosasaurs sometimes fighting and eating one another. “Consistent with” is deliberate wording. A mark alone does not prove cannibalism, identify the attacker, establish intent, or show that the victim was alive at the moment of contact.
Living tissue versus a carcass
Bone response is central to timing. Damage made while an animal was alive may show remodeled edges, callus, or other healing responses. A clean break with no biological reaction could have occurred after death or immediately before death, although lack of healing by itself does not reveal the cause. Abrasion, transport, and compaction can also imitate bite damage.
Comparing the trace with known mosasaur teeth helps attribution, but even a good match may identify only a size and tooth type. Closely related mosasaurs could produce overlapping marks, and a bite from an unknown predator may resemble one from a mosasaur.
Healing converts an injury into a survival timeline
The Dutch Prognathodon case
A 2020 Cretaceous Research study examined specimen NHMM 2012 072, assigned to Prognathodon cf. sectorius from the upper Maastrichtian of the Netherlands. The skull has extensive injuries, including partial loss of the front of the snout. The authors interpreted the pattern as a likely bite from a large mosasaur, possibly one of the same species.

Bone response indicates that the animal initially survived the trauma. However, infectious processes were still active when it died. The study discusses chronic osteomyelitis and the possibility that damage to the snout made feeding difficult. The specimen therefore supports a sequence—serious encounter, a period of survival, continuing infection, and possible feeding impairment—without proving exactly who bit it or that infection alone caused death.
What non-healing fractures can and cannot tell us
A 2004 Lethaia article abstract describes fossilized mosasaur jaw injuries, including fractures in Mosasaurus hoffmanni dentaries that did not unite. Non-union shows that the bone did not complete healing before preservation. It does not, by itself, identify a fight, a predator, or the animal’s cause of death. The interpretation must remain specimen-specific unless additional evidence links the fracture to a particular event.

Why teeth preserve a life history
Mosasaur teeth grew incrementally. As each layer formed, oxygen isotopes in the tooth recorded aspects of the water and the animal’s water intake. By sampling successive growth increments rather than treating a tooth as one bulk measurement, scientists can look for changes through time within one individual.

Results from three sampled mosasaurs
A peer-reviewed isotope study analyzed two adults and one juvenile representing Platecarpus tympaniticus and Clidastes propython from the Western Interior Seaway and Mississippi Embayment. The authors interpreted semi-regular oxygen-isotope depletions as movement between marine and freshwater coastal environments, together with periodic freshwater consumption. Their inferred records span roughly one to seven months, and they report freshwater intake at weekly to biweekly intervals for two genera.

These findings describe three sampled individuals, not every mosasaur. Oxygen values can be influenced by temperature, salinity, evaporation, local geology, and physiology, so the behavioral conclusion depends on the study’s calibration and comparisons. The result is best stated as evidence that these animals repeatedly encountered or consumed freshwater during the recorded intervals, with movement between environments as the authors’ interpretation.

- Document the trace. Photograph, measure, and map the feature before assigning a cause. Record tooth spacing, fracture geometry, stomach-content position, or isotope increments.
- Establish the specimen’s context. Identify the rock unit, age, depositional setting, associated animals, and whether the skeleton was articulated. A carcass in quiet offshore mud has a different preservation history from one transported through a channel.
- Compare anatomy and experiments. Match marks with tooth dimensions, jaw motion, and known fracture mechanics. Use modern analogues cautiously; similar damage can arise from different actions.
- Assess timing. Look for healing, weathering, digestion, abrasion, and mineral overgrowth. Healing indicates survival after injury, while an unhealed mark may have occurred near death or after death.
- Test alternatives. Ask whether scavenging, feeding on an already dead animal, postmortem transport, or burial chemistry explains the trace as well as an attack does.
- State the narrowest defensible claim. Separate what is observed from what is inferred, and identify whether the conclusion applies to one specimen, a few individuals, or a broader pattern.

Examples of precise versus overstated claims
- Supported: “The specimen contains turtle bone fragments in its body cavity, showing that this individual swallowed turtle material.”
- Too broad: “The species mainly hunted turtles.” One meal cannot establish population-wide diet.
- Supported: “The skull has tooth-shaped damage and healing, consistent with a serious bite that the animal survived initially.”
- Too certain: “A rival male attacked it in a territorial fight.” The fossil does not establish sex, motive, or social context.
- Supported: “Semi-regular oxygen-isotope shifts in three sampled mosasaurs were interpreted as movement between marine and freshwater coastal settings.”
- Too broad: “All mosasaurs migrated into rivers every week.” The isotope result applies to the sampled animals and the study’s interpretation.
Why the fossil record cannot provide a complete behavioral movie
Preservation is selective. Hard bones and teeth survive more often than muscle, skin, sound, or fleeting actions. A predator may leave no mark if it swallowed prey whole, while a rare accident may be preserved because the carcass settled quickly in fine sediment. Geological processes can erase marks, move bones, or add mineral features that resemble biology.
Sampling also shapes the apparent pattern. A handful of spectacular stomach contents can dominate public understanding even though most specimens contain no identifiable meal. Isotope profiles are powerful because they preserve a sequence, but they still represent particular animals from particular regions and time intervals. Population-level claims require many specimens, consistent methods, and comparisons with environmental records.
For that reason, a careful account uses verbs such as “shows,” “records,” “is consistent with,” and “was interpreted as.” It reserves “proves” for observations with a direct and well-established connection, such as identifiable prey inside a body cavity. The result is not a complete biography of a mosasaur, but a set of constrained answers: what it swallowed, what may have contacted its bones, how long it survived an injury, and how its water environment changed during tooth growth.
