Scientists measure Antarctic snow algae by combining field observations, snow samples, spectral reflectance, microscopy and satellite images. Microscopes provide cell counts at sampled locations; satellites help map visible blooms across much larger areas. Researchers then estimate how much algae is present and how darker, pigment-rich snow may affect absorbed sunlight. The measurements show that algae can substantially reduce snow reflectance, but they do not by themselves prove that algae caused a particular melt event.
What scientists mean by measuring snow algae
Snow algae are microscopic organisms that grow in snow. Some blooms give snow a green or red appearance because algal pigments affect the light reflected from the surface. To study them, researchers need to answer distinct questions: where algae are visible, how many cells are present in sampled snow, how much of the surface is covered, and whether the algae-darkened snow absorbs more sunlight.
No single instrument answers all of those questions. A microscope can count cells in a collected sample but represents only a small location. A satellite can survey a broad area, but it detects an optical signal rather than counting individual cells. Reflectance measurements connect those scales: researchers use the spectrum recorded on the ground to interpret satellite signals and estimate where blooms occur.

This distinction matters when reading reported totals. A cell concentration measured in a sample is a direct observation. A regional bloom area or total biomass derived from satellite pixels and field calibration is an estimate. A claim about increased melt is a further interpretation of the effect of lower reflectance on energy absorbed by snow.

How the measurement chain works
1. Locate and document visible blooms
Field teams identify visible bloom patches and record where samples are collected. In the 2020 Antarctic Peninsula mapping study, campaigns took place around Ryder Bay and Rothera in 2018 and on the Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, in 2019. The sampling design used GPS locations and aimed to represent the 10 × 10 m ground sampling scale of Sentinel-2 imagery.
Researchers also recorded bloom area and environmental observations. These details help connect a point on the ground to the corresponding satellite pixel and put the cell count in its surface context. A pixel is an area of ground represented by one image measurement; a small patch can occupy only part of that area.
2. Measure the snow’s reflectance
Reflectance is the fraction of incoming light that a surface reflects. A field spectrometer measures reflected light across wavelengths, rather than producing only a visual description such as “green.” Algal pigments absorb some wavelengths more strongly than others, leaving a spectral pattern that can be compared with satellite bands.
The 2020 study measured field reflectance under controlled viewing geometry and used a white reference panel to calibrate measurements. Viewing geometry matters because snow reflects light differently depending on the directions of illumination and observation. Satellite measurements can also vary with these conditions, so the field protocol helps make the comparison more meaningful.
Reflectance is not itself a cell count. It is an optical signal influenced by algae and by the snow and observing conditions. The value of the measurement is that it provides a link between what can be sampled and counted on the ground and what an instrument in orbit can observe over a wider region.

3. Collect snow and count cells
At sampled locations, researchers collect snow and determine cell concentration in the laboratory. The 2020 study used microscope imaging and automated particle analysis, with cells counted from a Neubauer-improved haemocytometer counting chamber. This is a grid-based laboratory tool that lets analysts count cells in a known volume of sample.
The outcome is a concentration for the processed sample, not a direct count of every cell in a satellite pixel. Sampling, sample preparation and the small volume viewed under the microscope mean that counts represent the collected material. The researchers use those measured concentrations to calibrate the relationship between algae and the satellite’s spectral signal.

4. Relate cell counts to Sentinel-2 signals
Sentinel-2 provides multispectral imagery: measurements in several wavelength bands rather than a single ordinary-color photograph. The 2020 mapping study related chlorophyll absorption in Sentinel-2 bands to the cell concentrations measured in field samples. Once calibrated, the spectral relationship can be applied to suitable image pixels to estimate the presence and amount of visible algae over a broader area.
This step is an inference based on calibration, not a remote microscope. The satellite does not resolve individual cells. It records a mixed signal from the surface represented by each pixel, so estimates depend on how well the field samples and measured reflectance represent the imaged conditions. A bloom smaller than a pixel, or one covering only part of it, can be difficult to separate cleanly from the surrounding snow.
5. Convert concentration into an estimated biomass
Cell concentration and biomass are related but are not interchangeable. To estimate biomass per area, the 2020 study converted measured cell concentrations using the thickness and density of the sampled snow layer, then applied an average dry mass per cell. Those steps turn a sample-based concentration into an area-based quantity and then into a dry-biomass estimate.

Each conversion adds assumptions. The sampled layer must represent the snow surface being mapped; the measured thickness and density matter; and an average cell dry mass stands in for variation among cells. Consequently, a mapped biomass total is not a direct weighing of all Antarctic snow algae. It is a derived estimate that depends on field measurements, calibration and the conversion choices.

The 2020 study used Sentinel-2 images from February and March across multiple years. The imagery was filtered for clouds and corrected for atmospheric effects and bidirectional reflectance effects—the way observed brightness changes with illumination and viewing direction. Researchers then applied the calibrated relationship to identify and estimate algae visible at the snow surface in the mapped conditions.
Satellite mapping is especially useful for comparing separated sites and estimating regional extent, tasks that would be impractical with field visits alone. However, the mapped result describes blooms detectable in the available imagery, not all algae beneath or within snow. Cloud-free gaps also remained, so the image collection did not provide complete coverage of every place and time.
What the Antarctic Peninsula map estimated
The Nature Communications study published in 2020 reported the following Antarctic Peninsula results:
| Reported quantity | 2020 study estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Mapped blooms | 1,679 | Blooms identified in the study’s satellite mapping, not a census of every Antarctic algae community. |
| Seasonal bloom area | 1.95 × 10⁶ m² | Mapped seasonal surface area for the study’s coverage and detection conditions. |
| Total dry biomass | 1.3 × 10³ tonnes | A derived estimate based on field calibration and assumptions about the sampled snow layer and cell dry mass. |
| Proximity to penguin colonies | 60% of observed blooms were less than 5 km away | A study-specific spatial association; it does not establish that proximity alone caused a bloom. |
The study associated bloom distribution with environmental conditions and marine nutrient inputs. It also noted that many observed blooms occur on small, low-lying islands, which may have limited room for range expansion. These are findings and projections tied to the studied region and conditions, not a rule that every bloom will expand or that all Antarctic sites behave alike.

How algae affect snow reflectance and melt
Darkening changes the surface energy balance
Clean snow is highly reflective. When algal pigments darken it, a smaller fraction of incoming sunlight is reflected and a larger fraction is absorbed at the surface. This is why reflectance matters to melt: all else being equal, additional absorbed solar energy can contribute to warming and melt.
A 2021 study in The Cryosphere measured spectral properties of coastal Antarctic red and green snow-algae communities. It reported that visibly green patches reduced snow albedo by approximately 40% and red patches by approximately 20% relative to clean snow. Albedo is a measure of surface reflectivity. The study also found a correlation between algal biomass and albedo reduction across the visible spectrum.
Why a reflectance result is not proof of a melt event
The albedo findings establish a measured difference in surface reflectivity and support a physical mechanism: darker snow absorbs more sunlight. They do not, on their own, show that algae caused a specific melt event or quantify how much local melt is attributable to algae. Establishing that causal contribution requires more than detecting algae and measuring a darker surface; conditions that affect snow and its energy balance must also be considered.
The 2021 authors argued that algal radiative forcing—the effect of a surface change on the balance of incoming and reflected energy—should be considered in future estimates of Antarctic Peninsula ice-free expansion. That is a reason to include algae in broader assessments, not evidence that algae alone drive regional ice loss.
What newer satellite workflows add
A 2025 ice-shelf study proposes combining Sentinel-1 synthetic-aperture radar observations of freeze-thaw conditions with Sentinel-2 multispectral observations used to detect algae. The purpose is to study seasonal patterns using complementary observations: radar helps track freeze-thaw conditions, while multispectral imagery supplies the optical signal used for algae detection.

This approach can broaden time-series analysis beyond a single optical image or bloom map. It should still be read as a research workflow for examining seasonal relationships. The fact that freeze-thaw observations and algae detections are analyzed together does not establish that algae alone caused ice-shelf melt.
Why the estimates remain uncertain
Surface visibility and snow cover
Optical satellite mapping can detect only algae visible at the surface in the observed conditions. Snow overlying algae can conceal them from the sensor, so a surface map may omit algae that are present below a fresh layer. Summer snowfall can also change what is exposed between observations.
Clouds, light and terrain
Frequent cloud cover limits the number of usable optical images. Snow’s directional scattering, low solar angles and mountainous terrain complicate reflectance comparisons because brightness depends partly on illumination, viewing direction and topography. Atmospheric and reflectance corrections reduce some of these effects, but they do not make every observation equivalent.
Pixel size and mixed surfaces
Available multispectral imagery may be too coarse to detect small blooms reliably. A bloom smaller than the pixel can be diluted by surrounding snow in the recorded signal, while a pixel may combine algae, clean snow and other surface features. That makes presence detection, bloom area and biomass estimation less certain at small scales.
Time coverage
The mapped biomass in the 2020 study represents a seasonal snapshot derived from available February and March imagery, rather than a complete, continuous record of the season. Cloud-free coverage gaps and changes in surface conditions limit comparisons across time and place. The study identified more frequent high-resolution imagery and additional field surveys as ways to improve coverage and address these limits.
How to read a snow-algae result
When evaluating a reported finding, first identify what was measured and what was calculated. A useful reading checklist is:
- Cell concentration: Was it counted from collected snow under a microscope? This is a direct sample measurement at a limited set of locations.
- Reflectance or albedo: Was light reflected by the surface measured on the ground or derived from imagery? Check what surface and comparison were used.
- Bloom extent: Was it mapped from satellite imagery? Treat the area as the extent detectable under those image, resolution and cloud conditions.
- Biomass: Was it converted from cell concentrations using snow depth or layer thickness, density and cell mass? It is an estimate whose assumptions should be visible.
- Melt impact: Does the result measure reflectance and infer greater energy absorption, or does it directly establish an algae-driven melt contribution? Lower albedo supports a plausible mechanism but is not, by itself, local causal proof.
Together, these distinctions explain both the power and the limits of the method. Ground sampling supplies the biological measurements needed for calibration; reflectance links those samples to satellite observations; and satellite images extend the view across a region. The result is a stronger picture than any one method could provide, while preserving the difference between observed cells, mapped estimates and inferred effects on melt.
