Scientists estimate carbon uptake in polar oceans by measuring the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (CO2) in surface seawater and the air above it, then calculating how quickly gas can cross the sea surface. The result is an air–sea CO2 flux estimate—not a direct reading of how much carbon the ocean has stored at depth. Ships, water samples, floats, satellites and models each contribute different pieces of evidence, and the sparsity of observations in remote, ice-covered seasons makes regional estimates especially dependent on how gaps are handled.
What “carbon uptake” means in a polar ocean
Carbon dioxide moves in both directions across the ocean surface. When the calculated exchange is toward the water, the ocean is taking up CO2 from the atmosphere; when it is toward the air, the ocean is releasing CO2. A sea can therefore absorb carbon during one period and release it during another. NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) emphasizes that ocean uptake and release vary across both time and space.
Scientists do not determine uptake from a single sensor reading. The core estimate combines the difference in CO2 partial pressure between surface water and the overlying atmosphere with a gas-transfer velocity: an estimate of how readily gas crosses the moving air–water boundary. Wind speed is one input used to estimate that transfer. NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory’s CarbonTracker documentation describes its ocean uptake calculation in these terms.

Comparing pCO2 in seawater with pCO2 in air indicates the direction of the pressure difference driving exchange. The transfer calculation then accounts for how quickly the surface can exchange gas. A pCO2 difference alone is not an amount of carbon stored in the ocean, and a surface flux is not the same thing as long-term storage at depth.

How a surface CO2 flux is estimated
Measure the two sides of the surface
Underway instruments on ships measure surface-water pCO2 as the vessel moves, while air measurements provide the atmospheric comparison. Other sensors collect relevant conditions such as water temperature, salinity and wind. Those supporting observations help scientists interpret the CO2 measurements and estimate gas transfer.
Estimate exchange across the boundary
The measured air–water pCO2 difference is combined with a gas-transfer scheme. Wind speed helps determine the transfer velocity in NOAA CarbonTracker’s method. The result is a flux: a rate of CO2 exchange across a defined area over time. It describes exchange at the surface, not simply the concentration of CO2 in one sample.
Pay attention to the sign convention when reading a flux value. Some products describe flux as air-to-sea, while others use sea-to-air. The words “positive” and “negative” can therefore mean different directions in different datasets. Check the product’s definition rather than assuming that a positive number always means uptake. A clear report should state the direction represented by its sign and the units used.

Turn route measurements into regional fields
A ship observes a track, not every point in a polar ocean. To estimate exchange over a broader region and period, scientists map or interpolate observations onto a grid. NOAA CarbonTracker describes creating a gridded surface-water pCO2 field using direct measurements and predictors including time, location, sea-surface temperature, salinity, chlorophyll and mixed-layer depth. It then combines the gridded ocean values with atmospheric pCO2 and wind-derived gas-transfer velocity to calculate exchange.

This distinction matters: pCO2 measured directly along a ship track is an observation; a value assigned to an unvisited grid cell is inferred from observations and the method used to fill gaps. The regional flux is consequently an estimate informed by measurements, not a continuous direct measurement at every location.
How scientists collect observations in polar waters
Ships and ships of opportunity
Research vessels and commercial ships can carry automated underway systems that continuously sample surface seawater along their routes. Repeated trips can add measurements across locations and seasons. NOAA/AOML’s Ship of Opportunity Program CO2 consortium (SOOP-CO2) has collected ocean carbon data using automated ship instruments since 2005, according to its program information.
In an NOAA/AOML account of an Arctic voyage aboard Le Commandant Charcot, scientist Leticia Barbero, Ph.D., used an underway pCO2 system. Seawater was pumped through the instrument, and data were sent by satellite modem. The system makes it possible to gather a sequence of surface observations during a voyage rather than relying only on isolated station samples.

CTD casts and water samples
Surface exchange measurements do not reveal the full vertical structure of ocean chemistry. During the Arctic voyage described by NOAA/AOML, the team also used a CTD and handheld Niskin bottles at sampling stations. The bottles collected water at multiple depths, from the surface down to 900 meters. Such profiles provide information about water below the immediate surface and help put surface conditions in a broader ocean context.

These samples answer a different question from underway pCO2 measurements. A continuous surface route helps show how conditions vary along the ship’s path; station-based samples reveal conditions at selected depths and locations. Neither, by itself, provides complete coverage of an entire polar region.
Buoys, floats, satellites and supporting systems
Other platforms contribute complementary observations. Buoys and drifting floats can add measurements beyond ship routes, while orbiting satellites provide broad views of the ocean surface. NASA’s Earth Observatory explains that ocean color can be used to estimate phytoplankton abundance, and notes the importance of winds, temperature and circulation when interpreting changes in ocean carbon. Ocean color is contextual information; it is not a direct measurement of air–sea CO2 flux.
NOAA’s Air-Sea Flux System overview describes shipboard instruments for measuring exchanges and notes optional CO2 measurements. A flux system and an underway pCO2 analyzer should not be treated as interchangeable: a regional estimate draws on the variables and methods available in a particular observing setup, alongside any other datasets used.

Access changes with season and ice
Polar oceans are remote and seasonally variable, so it is difficult to collect continuous observations everywhere. Ice can also disrupt the equipment needed to make surface measurements. In NOAA/AOML’s Arctic cruise account, the seawater pumping system had to be kept free of ice for the underway instrument to operate. This is a practical constraint on where and when a ship can collect a continuous surface record.

When observations are concentrated along accessible routes or in more accessible seasons, winter and other poorly sampled periods may be underrepresented. Interpolation and models help estimate conditions between observations, but they cannot turn a sparse record into direct measurement. The resulting regional estimate depends partly on the available coverage and on the assumptions used to fill gaps.
Different platforms see different parts of the system
Platforms are complementary rather than interchangeable. Ships can carry instruments for direct surface-water sampling and stop to collect vertical profiles. Satellites can provide broad surface context, such as ocean color, but that information does not itself establish CO2 flux. Floats and buoys help extend observations beyond ship tracks, while a model combines available inputs into a more complete spatial and temporal picture.
As a result, two estimates may differ because they cover different seasons, regions, periods or grid sizes; include different observations; or use different interpolation and gas-transfer methods. A difference does not automatically mean that one estimate is a direct reading and the other is wrong. The methods and coverage need to be compared before interpreting the values.
What current global products can—and cannot—say about polar uptake
NOAA CarbonTracker CT2026 reports global surface–atmosphere flux estimates from January 2000 through December 2025. It is a modeled, gridded product informed by observations. Its coverage period does not mean that every polar location was directly observed continuously over those years.

NOAA/AOML states that the global ocean takes up approximately one quarter of anthropogenic CO2 released each year. That is a global-ocean estimate, not a polar-ocean share, and it should not be used to infer the uptake rate of the Arctic, Southern Ocean or any particular polar region. The same program notes that uptake and release patterns vary in time and space.
SOOP-CO2 also states a target of 0.2 Pg C yr−1 for the accuracy of data used to constrain sea–air CO2 fluxes. This is a program accuracy target, not a measured annual ocean uptake value or a polar-region result. Keeping targets, modeled fluxes and observed measurements distinct prevents a technical specification from being mistaken for a finding.
How to evaluate a reported polar-ocean flux
Before comparing numbers from different papers, dashboards or model products, check what each estimate actually represents:
Recommended Free Tools
- Region and grid: Is it a named sea, a wider polar region or the global ocean? What spatial resolution is reported?
- Period and season: Which years are included, and are winter observations represented or is coverage concentrated in more accessible seasons?
- Observations: Which data came from ships, stations, floats, buoys or other platforms? Are values direct measurements or inferred between observations?
- Method: How were surface-water pCO2 values mapped, and what inputs and gas-transfer scheme were used?
- Direction and units: Does the sign mean air-to-sea or sea-to-air? Are units and the area and time basis stated?
- Meaning of the result: Is the reported quantity a surface flux, an annual total, a model estimate, a target for data accuracy or an estimate of stored carbon? Those are not interchangeable.
These checks are especially important when a global figure is presented next to a polar result. A global average cannot be assigned to a polar sea without a region-specific estimate, and a gridded model field should be described as an estimate even when observations help constrain it.
What the measurements ultimately tell us
Polar-ocean carbon uptake is established by combining observations of surface CO2 with an estimate of gas exchange, then extending the sampled record across space and time using mapping or models. The strongest interpretation keeps three layers separate: what instruments measured, what calculation converted those measurements into flux, and what inference was needed for places or seasons without direct observations.
That approach can reveal where and when exchange is directed into or out of the ocean, while recognizing that uptake is variable and observations are incomplete. It also prevents a common overstatement: measuring inward surface flux is evidence of atmospheric CO2 entering the ocean, but it is not, on its own, a measurement of how much carbon has been retained at depth over longer timescales.
