Scientists do not diagnose dinosaur cannibalism from a bite mark alone. They infer it when a pattern of tooth marks or other feeding traces shows that one dinosaur consumed another, and the evidence supports the biter and victim being the same species. That conclusion requires several lines of evidence: the mark’s shape and location, whether it was made before or after death, which predators lived nearby, and whether feeding is more plausible than combat or another interaction.
The result is usually expressed with a confidence level. A published case may be described as direct evidence, possible cannibalism, or likely cannibalism, depending on how securely researchers can identify the trace maker and behavior.
What must be shown before a fossil can indicate cannibalism?
A cannibalism interpretation has two separate parts. First, the traces must be consistent with feeding rather than an ordinary injury, display bite, or fight. Second, the animal that made the traces must plausibly belong to the same species as the animal whose bones were marked. If either part is uncertain, the strongest defensible conclusion is narrower: a dinosaur was bitten, or a carcass was fed upon.

A tooth mark is evidence of contact, not automatically consumption
Grooves, pits, scores and punctures can record a tooth striking bone, but the same broad category of trace can arise in different circumstances. A living animal might be bitten during a fight. A predator might remove flesh from a carcass after death. A scavenger from another species might leave marks that look similar to those made by a potential cannibal. Researchers therefore examine the entire arrangement of traces, not just whether one mark is present.

Species attribution is the central problem
To call an event cannibalism, researchers need a reason to connect the biter and victim to one species. That connection can be difficult when several large carnivores occupied the same ecosystem. A mark may be anatomically compatible with more than one predator, and a fossil assemblage can contain animals that were capable of feeding on the same carcass. The identity of an individual tooth cannot always be recovered from the mark itself.
Feeding must be separated from combat
Location and timing help distinguish behavior. Marks on a living animal can heal, leaving remodeled or otherwise repaired bone. Such healing demonstrates that the animal survived the injury; it does not demonstrate that the attacker later ate it. By contrast, a cut or bite made after death may preserve no healing response and can be associated with carcass processing. Even then, postmortem feeding does not prove that the biter killed the victim.
The forensic workflow paleontologists use
1. Document every trace
Researchers first record where each mark occurs, its orientation, depth, spacing and visible shape. They map marks across the bone and note whether they cluster in areas that would have carried muscle or been readily exposed during carcass feeding. The goal is to describe the trace before assigning a cause. There is no single universal mark that identifies cannibalism regardless of context.

2. Establish whether the mark is premortem or postmortem
Bone can react to an injury sustained during life. Evidence of healing, such as remodeled margins, indicates a premortem wound. A clean mark without a healing response may have been made after death, although preservation and burial conditions also affect what survives. This timing distinction is crucial: healed injuries often fit intraspecific combat, while separate unhealed bites may represent feeding.
3. Ask whether the traces indicate feeding
Researchers evaluate whether the marks occur in a pattern compatible with flesh removal, repeated biting or access to a carcass. They also consider scavenging. Feeding and scavenging overlap because both involve eating tissue from a body, but neither automatically identifies the consumer as a member of the victim’s species. A report should explain why the observed arrangement favors feeding over a single defensive bite or accidental contact.
4. List every credible trace maker
The fossil-bearing formation and its associated fauna provide the candidate list. Researchers compare the size and geometry of the marks with the teeth and jaws of predators known from that ecosystem. If several taxa could have produced the traces, the attribution remains qualified. The presence of a large theropod in the same deposit is not, by itself, proof that it made every bite.

5. Test the same-species hypothesis
Once likely trace makers are identified, researchers ask whether one of them could also be the victim’s species. This may rely on the known species composition of the site, the size of the animal, and the anatomy of the marks. The inference is strongest when alternative predators are absent or poorly matched and weakest when multiple large carnivores were abundant.
6. Eliminate competing explanations
Combat, scavenging by another species, trampling, weathering and post-depositional damage can all imitate parts of a feeding signal. Researchers compare the trace pattern with these alternatives and state which explanations remain viable. A careful paper does not turn an unresolved attribution into a categorical claim.
7. Report calibrated confidence
Terminology communicates how much of the chain is secure. “Direct evidence” means the authors regard the traces as clear evidence of feeding on conspecific remains. “Possible” indicates that a same-species biter is plausible but not demonstrated. “Likely” indicates that the balance of trace, ecological and taxonomic evidence favors cannibalism while retaining a meaningful uncertainty.

Tyrannosaurus rex: the clearest published claim
Longrich and colleagues’ 2010 study reported four Tyrannosaurus rex specimens bearing tooth marks made by large carnivorous dinosaurs. The authors interpreted those marks as direct evidence that tyrannosaurs fed on conspecific remains. The conclusion concerns consumption of members of the same species; it does not establish that the individual that fed was the one that killed each animal. A carcass could have been killed by disease, injury, another predator or an unknown event before being eaten.
Daspletosaurus: combat and feeding in one specimen
A 2015 study of a specimen from Dinosaur Provincial Park illustrates why timing must be separated. Numerous injuries sustained while the animal was alive showed evidence of healing and were interpreted primarily as intraspecific combat. The same specimen also carried postmortem bites from a large tyrannosaurid that may have been another Daspletosaurus. The word “may” is important: the postmortem traces are compatible with cannibalistic feeding, but the biter’s species is not established as a certainty.
Allosaurus at the Mygatt-Moore Quarry
A 2020 survey examined 2,368 vertebrate fossils from the Mygatt-Moore Quarry. It found 684 specimens with at least one theropod bite mark, equal to 28.885 percent of that sampled collection. The authors argued that the frequency of traces, the likely predators and the abundance of Allosaurus together make the assemblage likely to preserve the first evidence of cannibalism in that genus.

That percentage describes this quarry survey only. It is not a rate for all Allosaurus, all theropods or dinosaurs generally. The study also discusses feeding, scavenging and possible cannibalism as related but distinct interpretations, so the number of marked fossils should not be read as a count of cannibalistic events.
Morrison Formation sauropods: feeding evidence without a cannibalism diagnosis
A 2023 survey catalogued bite traces on 68 sauropod bones from the Morrison Formation. The observed traces showed no evidence of healing, supporting a postmortem timing for the marks where preservation allowed that assessment. The authors attributed them to theropods but noted that assigning any individual bite to a particular theropod can be difficult when several candidate taxa are present.
Because the bitten sauropods were not identified as conspecific victims of the biters, this survey is not evidence of cannibalism. It demonstrates how feeding traces can be documented while the species-level conclusion remains unavailable.

How to interpret percentages and specimen counts
Fossil studies measure the material that was collected and preserved, not every animal that lived or died. A quarry may overrepresent carcasses that accumulated in one setting, bones that resisted destruction, or specimens selected for study. The 684 marked specimens in the Mygatt-Moore survey therefore tell readers how common traces were in that collection under that study’s sampling design. They do not estimate the proportion of dinosaurs that practiced cannibalism.
Likewise, the four Tyrannosaurus rex specimens in the 2010 report are a study count, not a population frequency. Counts become informative only when their sampling limits, preservation biases and identification criteria are stated alongside them.
What can and cannot be concluded from a fossil
Strong conclusions
- A bone bears genuine tooth marks rather than weathering or preparation damage.
- The marks were made after death or during life, with the evidence for timing explained.
- The trace pattern is consistent with feeding rather than a single combat injury.
- The likely biter and victim can be assigned to the same species with reasonable confidence.
Conclusions that require qualification
- Postmortem feeding proves that a carcass was eaten, not who killed the animal.
- A healed wound proves survival after an injury, not cannibalism.
- A predator’s presence at a site does not assign every bite to that taxon.
- A high local percentage of marked fossils does not provide a species-wide rate.
A practical checklist for evaluating a new claim
- Identify the trace. Is it a documented tooth mark, and are its location, shape and pattern described?
- Check timing. Is there healing that places the injury during life, or evidence that the bite occurred after death?
- Separate behaviors. Does the arrangement indicate feeding, or could it be combat, scavenging by another animal or damage after burial?
- Inventory the ecosystem. Which carnivores are known from the same formation and could physically make the marks?
- Test species identity. Is there a defensible reason to say the biter and victim were the same species?
- Read the authors’ qualifier. Treat “direct,” “possible” and “likely” as different levels of evidence, not interchangeable wording.
- Keep the sample in scope. Apply counts and percentages only to the specimens and locality that were actually studied.
The bottom line for readers
Dinosaur cannibalism is a contextual inference built from trace anatomy, timing, feeding behavior and species attribution. The decisive question is not simply “Was this bone bitten?” but “What behavior made these marks, which animal made them, and can that animal be identified as the victim’s species?” Cases range from the direct interpretation reported for four Tyrannosaurus rex specimens to the qualified “may” and “likely” conclusions in Daspletosaurus and Allosaurus studies. Treating those qualifiers as part of the evidence is what separates a defensible paleontological conclusion from an eye-catching guess.
