Zero resistance is useful evidence of superconductivity, but it is not a perfect yes-or-no test. A finite reading can result from contact resistance, voltage criteria, current and magnetic-field effects, sample geometry, or a superconducting path that does not span the whole specimen.
Researchers therefore combine transport with magnetic measurements and, when practical, a thermodynamic test such as specific heat. Confidence is greatest when independently measured electrical, magnetic and heat-capacity signatures occur at consistent temperatures under clearly reported conditions.
Why a nonzero resistance reading does not settle the question
A four-probe measurement separates the contacts that deliver current from the contacts that sense voltage, reducing ordinary lead resistance. It still does not make the experiment a perfect detector of superconductivity. The reported resistance depends on the current, the voltage-sensitivity threshold, contact placement, sample dimensions, applied magnetic field, temperature range and the magnetic field generated by the measuring current.

The NIST technical report on superconductors summarizes the problem precisely: “It is easier to define a superconductor as a material with zero electrical resistivity than it is to experimentally verify zero resistivity.” In practice, a very small voltage may be hidden by instrument resolution or thermoelectric voltages. Conversely, a voltage can remain because one contact is poor, a crack interrupts part of the current path, or the chosen contacts do not cover the region that actually becomes superconducting.

Transport also samples only the route taken by the current. A narrow superconducting bridge, surface layer or network of connected grains can carry current between the voltage contacts while most of the specimen remains normal. That is why even an apparent zero-resistance state does not, by itself, prove that the material is a bulk superconductor. The reverse is also true: a finite resistance does not, by itself, disprove superconductivity.
What the main measurements actually probe
| Measurement | Physical quantity | Evidence it can provide | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-probe resistance | Electrical transport through the contacted region | A transition in resistance or a zero-resistance state under specified current, field and voltage criteria | Results depend on contacts, geometry, current, field and the possibility of filamentary paths. |
| DC susceptibility or magnetization | Magnetic response to an applied field | Diamagnetic shielding; with a field-cooled protocol, evidence associated with flux expulsion | Strong flux pinning and demagnetizing geometry can reduce or distort the measured response. |
| AC susceptibility | Response to a small alternating magnetic field | A shielding transition and other magnetic signatures | Loss peaks and frequency-dependent amplitudes are not universal criteria for bulk superconductivity. |
| Specific heat | Thermodynamic response near the transition | An anomaly showing that the transition is associated with a substantial portion of the sample | A small or poorly resolved feature can limit what can be concluded; it should be interpreted with other probes. |
These methods answer different questions. Resistance asks whether a conducting path between selected contacts changes sharply. Susceptibility asks how the sample responds magnetically. Specific heat asks whether the material’s thermodynamic state changes at the same temperature. Agreement among them is more persuasive than any isolated feature.
A practical workflow for a finite-resistance sample
1. Audit and repeat the transport measurement
Before treating a residual resistance as evidence against superconductivity, document the complete measurement rather than quoting a single curve.

- Record the four-contact arrangement and identify which contacts source current and which sense voltage.
- State the excitation current and its direction, the voltage criterion used to define the transition, and the instrument’s noise or resolution.
- Give the temperature range, temperature-sweep direction and stabilization time at each point.
- Report the applied magnetic field and, where relevant, estimate whether the measuring current’s own magnetic field could matter.
- Repeat the run with different currents and, if possible, alternative contact pairs. A transition that shifts strongly with current or contact choice needs a measurement-artifact check.
- Inspect the contacts and sample after cooling. Contact materials, curing, pressure and surface reactions can change the measured path.
Thermoelectric voltages are especially troublesome near a transition because they can be comparable to the tiny signal being measured. Reversing the current and averaging the resulting voltages can help separate an ohmic component from offsets, but the procedure and its limits should be stated in the report. The central point is not that one correction guarantees a true value; it is that the voltage criterion and uncertainty must be visible to the reader.
A contact-dependent example: CaSb2
A peer-reviewed study of the nonsymmorphic line-nodal compound CaSb2 reported superconducting behavior using electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. The authors observed a Meissner-effect onset near 1.8 K, yet zero resistance was absent with one silver-epoxy contact configuration. They suggested that the sample might have reacted with air or with the epoxy during curing at 120 °C. This is a material- and preparation-specific example, not a general explanation for every finite-resistance result. It illustrates why a contact configuration must be treated as part of the experiment rather than as an incidental detail.
2. Measure magnetic shielding and flux expulsion
Magnetic measurements can reveal superconductivity even when a transport path is imperfect. Magnetic susceptibility tracks how the sample’s magnetization changes with an applied field. A diamagnetic response indicates shielding: currents oppose magnetic-field penetration within the sample.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Zero-field-cooled DC susceptibility on warming: the sample is cooled in (or very near) zero applied field, a field is applied at low temperature, and the response is measured while warming. This demonstrates magnetic shielding.
- Field-cooled DC susceptibility on cooling: the field is present while the sample is cooled. A response associated with flux being expelled on cooling is evidence relevant to the Meissner effect.
- AC susceptibility without a DC bias: the alternating field probes an incremental shielding response during warming or cooling. It should not automatically be described as a direct measurement of flux expulsion.
A reported “Meissner effect” therefore needs the field history, DC or AC excitation, amplitude and frequency, temperature direction and sample geometry. Without those details, two apparently conflicting reports may simply be measuring different magnetic quantities.
Why a weak magnetic signal does not automatically rule out superconductivity
Type-II superconductors can pin magnetic flux strongly. Pinning can suppress a large, easily recognizable flux-expulsion signal even when the material is superconducting. Demagnetizing effects caused by the specimen’s shape also alter the apparent susceptibility. A small magnetic signal should prompt better characterization of geometry, field history and pinning, not an automatic rejection of the superconducting interpretation.

There is a separate danger in overinterpreting AC data. A 1986 study by Hein found that certain AC-susceptibility loss peaks and frequency-dependent signal magnitudes were not generally reliable criteria for bulk superconductivity. The result is a warning against single-feature shortcuts, not a claim that AC susceptibility is useless. It remains valuable when its shielding response is analyzed alongside transport, DC magnetization and thermodynamic data.
3. Look for a thermodynamic transition with specific heat
Specific heat provides a different kind of evidence because it measures a thermodynamic property rather than only the existence of a conducting route. A reproducible anomaly, such as a step or peak in heat capacity at the superconducting transition, indicates that the material’s thermodynamic state changes at that temperature. That helps distinguish a bulk transition from a thin filament that happens to connect voltage contacts.

The numerical size of a heat-capacity anomaly is not a universal pass/fail threshold. Resolution depends on sample mass, background subtraction, addenda, temperature range and the strength of the transition. A missing or barely visible anomaly may therefore limit the conclusion without proving that no superconductivity exists.

4. Test whether the signal is filamentary or percolative
Compare the temperatures and field dependences from all probes. If resistance falls or reaches zero well above the temperature at which a magnetic or heat-capacity transition appears, a connected minority region is a plausible explanation. Grains, interfaces, cracks or a surface layer can form a percolation network that carries current while the bulk remains normal.
A study of heavy-fermion CeIrIn5 compared a zero-resistance anomaly with specific heat and AC susceptibility and interpreted the anomaly as filamentary superconductivity relative to the bulk transition. The NIST review of critical-field measurements likewise discusses isolated regions and percolation networks as complications. These are examples from particular materials, but they establish the general diagnostic: transport and bulk probes need not turn on at the same temperature when only part of a specimen is superconducting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret common combinations of results
| Observed combination | Most useful interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Finite resistance, clear diamagnetic shielding, and a heat-capacity anomaly at a consistent temperature | The finite reading may reflect contacts, geometry, voltage criterion or sample damage rather than the absence of a bulk transition. | Repeat transport with verified contacts and multiple currents; report all three transition temperatures and uncertainties. |
| Zero or near-zero resistance, but no reproducible magnetic response or heat-capacity feature | A filamentary, surface or percolative path remains possible; transport alone does not establish bulk superconductivity. | Change contact pairs, examine field dependence and obtain DC susceptibility or calorimetry if feasible. |
| Weak magnetic response, with a transition in another probe | Flux pinning, demagnetizing geometry or an unsuitable field-cooling protocol may be suppressing the apparent Meissner signal. | Specify zero-field-cooled and field-cooled measurements, sample dimensions and field history; repeat with appropriate fields. |
| AC loss peak or frequency dependence without corroborating evidence | The feature is not, by itself, a reliable bulk-superconductivity criterion. | Seek shielding data, DC magnetization and a thermodynamic anomaly rather than relying on the peak alone. |
| Different probes show widely separated transition temperatures | The specimen may be inhomogeneous, or a minority superconducting region may be producing the transport signal. | Map the sample, vary contacts and field, and correlate each transition with the same preparation and thermal history. |
What a defensible experimental claim should report
A convincing paper does not merely state “the resistance was not zero” or “a Meissner effect was observed.” It gives enough information for another laboratory to understand what was actually measured.
- Identify the sample: composition, crystallinity or ceramic form, dimensions, mass and preparation history.
- Describe the contacts: material, placement, curing or bonding temperature, contact resistance and any exposure to air or moisture.
- Define the transport result: current, voltage criterion, resistance resolution, field, sweep rate and whether current reversal or repeated runs were used.
- Describe magnetic protocols precisely: DC or AC excitation, AC amplitude and frequency, DC bias if present, zero-field-cooled or field-cooled sequence, field magnitude and sample orientation.
- State the geometry corrections: dimensions and demagnetizing assumptions used to interpret susceptibility or magnetization.
- Show thermodynamic quality: calorimeter method, background treatment, sample mass and whether the anomaly is resolved above the measurement uncertainty.
- Compare transition definitions: onset, midpoint and completion temperatures should not be mixed without labels, because different definitions can create apparent disagreements.
- Separate evidence from inference: say whether the data demonstrate a transport transition, shielding, flux expulsion, or a bulk thermodynamic transition. Reserve “bulk superconductivity” for a conclusion supported by bulk-sensitive evidence.
Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every diamagnetic signal a Meissner effect: distinguish shielding from flux expulsion and name the field-cooling protocol.
- Treating a finite resistance as a disproof: first check contacts, voltage offsets, current, geometry, field and sample integrity.
- Treating zero resistance as proof of a bulk state: test for a filamentary or percolating path with magnetic and thermodynamic probes.
- Using one AC feature as a universal criterion: loss peaks and frequency dependence require corroboration.
- Ignoring type-II behavior: flux pinning can make a genuine superconductor’s expulsion signal modest.
- Comparing unlike transition temperatures: an onset in resistance, a midpoint in susceptibility and a heat-capacity step are different definitions and should be labeled separately.
- Generalizing from one compound: the CaSb2 and CeIrIn5 results show how sample-specific effects work; they do not prescribe the transition behavior of every superconductor.
What counts as strong evidence?
The strongest case is a coherent set of measurements: a transport transition that survives contact and current checks, a magnetic shielding response measured with a stated protocol, evidence of flux expulsion when the field-cooled experiment supports that interpretation, and a specific-heat anomaly at a compatible temperature. No single probe is infallible. A finite resistance can coexist with superconductivity, and a zero-resistance path can exist without bulk superconductivity. The scientifically useful conclusion is therefore conditional and explicit: state which signatures were observed, under what conditions, and whether they establish a local path, magnetic shielding, flux expulsion or a bulk thermodynamic transition.
