Scientists do not choose a Mars rock simply because it looks unusual. Perseverance’s sampling strategy starts with the geology of Jezero Crater, then balances five questions: Does a specimen represent an important environment? Could it preserve evidence of ancient habitability or biosignatures? Is its origin and setting documented well enough to interpret? Can it survive collection and storage without losing information? And can engineers and planetary-protection specialists handle it safely?

That decision process is designed to produce a scientifically interpretable set of samples rather than a collection of isolated curiosities. Perseverance is collecting and caching material now; bringing those tubes to Earth belongs to a separate NASA-ESA campaign that NASA currently describes as a proposed effort and future mission concept, not a settled return schedule or architecture.

Why the landing site comes before the individual rock

A laboratory result is most useful when scientists know where a sample came from, what surrounded it and how it formed. Perseverance therefore studies Jezero Crater’s rocks, sediments and landscape as a connected geological record. The rover’s observations help reconstruct regional history and identify environments that may once have been habitable.

Only after that site-level work can a rock be judged in context. A specimen from an ancient lake deposit answers a different question from one formed by volcanic activity or altered by groundwater. Even two rocks that look similar at rover scale may have different origins, chemistry or exposure histories. Context lets researchers compare those differences instead of treating every tube as an unrelated object.

The five criteria behind a defensible sample set

1. Represent the crater’s geological diversity

NASA describes representativeness as a central objective: the cache should include promising material from the landing site’s range of geological environments. Diversity does not mean collecting one of everything by appearance. It means selecting samples that span meaningful differences in rock type, sedimentary setting, alteration and surface history.

A diverse set protects against drawing a broad conclusion from a narrow slice of Mars. If all samples came from one layer or one alteration process, scientists might mistake a local signal for a planetary one. Contrasting environments can reveal which minerals or chemical patterns are widespread and which are tied to a particular setting.

2. Favor environments that could preserve biosignatures

The rover also targets materials with a plausible ability to preserve biosignatures—physical or chemical traces that could be relevant to past life. Preservation potential depends on the environment in which a material formed and was altered. Fine-grained sediments, mineral coatings or chemically protected inclusions may retain information that is destroyed in more exposed material, but the value of any candidate must be assessed from its geological setting rather than from an intriguing visual feature alone.

“Potential to preserve” is not the same as “contains evidence of life.” A promising environment earns a place in the cache because it offers a scientifically testable chance to retain evidence, not because the rover has already detected life.

3. Document the sample’s context

Before and during sampling, the team records observations that tie a tube to its surroundings. The aim is to preserve the chain of interpretation: the rock’s position, relationships to nearby layers or veins, surface characteristics and the rover measurements used to assess it.

Context also makes comparisons possible. If two samples show different organic signals in Earth laboratories, researchers can ask whether they formed in different environments, experienced different alteration or simply came from parts of the crater with different contamination or exposure histories.

4. Reduce preservation risks

A candidate can be scientifically attractive yet unsuitable if collection or storage would damage the information scientists hope to study. NASA’s preservation objectives include minimizing exposure to high temperatures and magnetic fields, maintaining mechanical integrity and avoiding contamination. These controls keep future analytical options open because later instruments may examine properties that handling or environmental exposure can change.

5. Meet engineering and planetary-protection constraints

Science is not the only filter. NASA says caching must account for future engineering needs and planetary protection. The sampling system has to collect, seal and store material in a way that a later mission could handle. At the same time, procedures must address both directions of planetary protection: preventing Earth material from compromising investigations of Mars and preventing potentially hazardous returned material from reaching Earth’s environment.

How teams weigh competing candidates

There is no single ranking that makes one rock automatically “best.” Teams evaluate candidates across coupled dimensions:

Decision dimension Question scientists ask Why it matters
Geologic representativeness Does this material capture an environment or process not already represented? A broader set supports conclusions about Jezero’s history rather than one local outcrop.
Habitability and preservation potential Could the formation or alteration setting protect biosignatures or other records of ancient conditions? Some environments are more likely than others to retain delicate chemical or mineral evidence.
Context strength Can the sample be tied confidently to its layer, surroundings and formation history? Context allows Earth-based results to be interpreted instead of treated as disconnected measurements.
Collection and storage risk Could heat, magnetic exposure, breakage or contamination alter the material? Lower risk preserves more types of future analyses.
Engineering compatibility Can the rover’s system collect and cache it within mission constraints? A scientifically ideal target is not useful if it cannot be acquired and stored reliably.
Planetary-protection compatibility Can the sample be managed in a way that protects Mars investigations and Earth? Handling and return plans must satisfy safety requirements as well as scientific goals.

This framework explains why “the most unusual-looking rock” is an inadequate rule. A less conspicuous specimen may fill a major gap in geological coverage, have stronger context or pose less risk of alteration.

From target to cache: what the rover’s objective entails

  1. Characterize the setting. Perseverance surveys the outcrop and surrounding terrain to understand layering, composition, alteration and relationships among materials.
  2. Identify a scientifically valuable target. Teams look for material that adds geological diversity, comes from a potentially habitable environment or offers a credible chance of preserving biosignatures.
  3. Record the context. Rover observations establish where the material sits and how it relates to nearby rocks, sediments and structures.
  4. Collect and seal the material. The sample is placed in a mission-specific tube under controls intended to protect its integrity and limit contamination.
  5. Preserve a useful set, not just individual specimens. The cache is planned as a collection whose members can be compared and interpreted together.

NASA’s objectives page lists 38 empty tubes and an approximate target of 30 samples for Perseverance’s mission. Those are planning objectives, not a live inventory of tubes currently filled, still available or guaranteed to return.

How preservation protects scientific meaning

Limit heat and magnetic-field exposure

Temperature and magnetic fields can affect materials that future researchers may want to measure. NASA therefore identifies minimizing high-temperature and magnetic-field exposure as part of the preservation approach. The point is not that every exposure would ruin a sample; it is that unnecessary exposure could narrow the range of reliable analyses.

Maintain mechanical integrity

Breaking, crushing or otherwise changing a specimen can destroy relationships between grains, veins, coatings and interiors. Maintaining mechanical integrity helps laboratories examine both bulk composition and the physical arrangement that records how a rock formed or changed.

Prevent terrestrial contamination

Earth-derived material can create a false signal, mask a Martian one or make an ambiguous result harder to interpret. Clean handling is therefore a measurement-quality requirement, not merely a matter of tidiness.

What the 150-nanogram cleanliness figure means

In a 2021 NASA feature about Perseverance’s sample tubes, the team described a requirement to limit total Earth-based organic compounds in a given sample to less than 150 nanograms. Ian Clark, identified there as the mission’s assistant project systems engineer for sample-tube cleanliness at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, explained:

“To achieve the kind of science the mission is going after, we needed to limit the total amount of Earth-based organic compounds in a given sample to less than 150 nanograms.”

— Ian Clark, quoted by NASA in its 2021 sample-tube cleanliness feature

That number belongs to the Perseverance tube-cleanliness discussion and its mission context. It is not a universal contamination threshold for every Mars mission, every returned specimen or every planetary-protection decision. The underlying principle is broader: contamination limits must be stringent enough that terrestrial organics do not overwhelm the measurements the mission is designed to make.

Planetary protection has two separate jobs

Protect Mars from Earth

Spacecraft and sampling hardware are controlled so that Earth organisms and other terrestrial material do not compromise investigations of Mars. This objective supports both scientific credibility and responsible exploration.

Protect Earth from returned material

If samples are eventually brought home, NASA says they are to be contained, examined under quarantine and confirmed safe—or completely sterilized—before distribution to science laboratories. Containment for Earth safety is different from keeping a sample pristine for science. A tube can require protection from contamination while the eventual return system also requires secure isolation from people and the environment.

Why scientists want Mars samples on Earth

The proposed return campaign would make the material available to sophisticated laboratories, including instruments too large, complex or power-hungry to send to Mars. Earth laboratories can apply multiple techniques to the same tiny specimen, revisit measurements as methods improve and compare results across institutions.

NASA identifies several scientific aims: reconstructing the geological history of Jezero and Mars, assessing astrobiological questions and studying planetary processes. These are opportunities for detailed investigation, not guarantees that returned rocks will reveal life or resolve every question about Mars.

How scientists will interpret a possible biosignature

A signal that resembles a biosignature must survive attempts to explain it through nonbiological processes. NASA has emphasized that other explanations remain under consideration for the features observed at Cheyava Falls. That caution applies to sample selection as well as laboratory interpretation: a target may be worth collecting because it preserves a testable record, while the result still requires competing hypotheses, controls and geological context.

Sampling bias is another limitation. Perseverance can collect only a small, operationally feasible subset of Jezero’s materials. If the cache overrepresents accessible outcrops, particular layers or rocks that preserve well, conclusions may not describe every environment on Mars. A diverse, well-documented set reduces that risk but cannot eliminate it.

What is—and is not—settled about sample return

Perseverance’s current work is sample collection and caching. NASA’s mission page describes Mars Sample Return as a proposed NASA-ESA campaign and a future mission concept. That wording matters: the return architecture and schedule should not be presented as finalized facts. The scientific logic of selecting and preserving samples can be explained independently of whether, when or exactly how a later mission retrieves them.

The strongest sample is therefore not simply the one with the most dramatic appearance. It is material selected within a documented geological story, valuable because it adds representative diversity or preserves a potentially informative environment, collected and stored with minimal alteration, and compatible with the engineering and safety requirements of a possible future return.
