Mars rover “sample analysis” follows two different paths. Curiosity drills and scoops rock, turns it into powder, and analyzes portions inside the rover with mineralogical and chemical instruments. Perseverance examines rocks in place, cores selected material, and seals those cores in tubes for possible future laboratory study on Earth. In both cases, scientists combine images, surface chemistry, mineral data, organic-compound measurements, and geological context before drawing a conclusion.
What scientists are trying to learn from a Martian rock
A rover measurement is evidence about a particular rock, not a complete verdict about Mars. Scientists may ask several separate questions:
- What elements are present, and in what approximate abundances?
- Which minerals and crystal structures make up the rock?
- Did water, volcanic heat, atmospheric gases, or other processes alter it?
- Are organic or other volatile compounds present?
- Could the rock or the environment have preserved evidence of ancient life?
No single rover instrument answers all of these questions. A laser spectrum, a contact chemical measurement, an X-ray diffraction pattern, and gases released by heating are different kinds of evidence. Scientists interpret them together with the rock’s texture, location, surrounding layers, and geological history.

1. Build geological context from a distance
Rover teams first use navigation and science cameras to map outcrops, layers, soil patches, veins, nodules, and other features. Images reveal color, grain size, fractures, bedding, and relationships between rock units. Those observations help the team decide whether a target represents an unusual material, a broader geological unit, or a contact between different materials.

Remote measurements add chemistry before the rover touches a target. Curiosity’s ChemCam fires a laser at a small spot, creating a hot plasma whose emitted light reveals elements in the vaporized material. Because it can work from a distance, ChemCam can survey many targets that would be impractical to approach. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS), placed directly against a surface, measures elemental abundances at contact. The two techniques provide complementary context rather than interchangeable results.
2. Make a close-up and contact inspection
Once a target is selected for closer study, cameras and spectrometers examine its surface and texture. Contact measurements can test whether a bright vein, dark coating, loose soil, or apparently solid rock differs chemically from the surrounding material. This stage helps scientists choose a representative location and avoid mistaking dust or weathered crust for the interior of the rock.
3. Decide whether to powder, abrade, or core
The rover’s mission determines what happens next. Curiosity’s objective is in-situ laboratory analysis: it drills or scoops material, processes it, and delivers portions to instruments inside the rover. Perseverance is designed to preserve carefully selected cores. It therefore exposes fresh surfaces, performs a coordinated survey, and only then commits a portion of the rock to a sealed sample tube.
How Curiosity analyzes a drilled or scooped sample
Drilling and collecting material
Curiosity’s drill cuts into bedrock and pulverizes part of it. The rover can also collect loose material with its scoop. The first drill sample, in 2013, was estimated from images at about 14 cubic centimeters—roughly a tablespoon. That figure describes one historical engineering estimate, not a standard amount for every later sample.

Louise Jandura, the Curiosity sample-system chief engineer, described that first collection as: “This was an important event as this is the first time the drill has been used on Mars to collect sample for analysis by instruments on the rover.” The statement captures the essential distinction between Curiosity and a sample-return mission: the collected powder was intended for instruments already operating on Mars.
CHIMRA sorts and portions the powder
After drilling or scooping, material enters CHIMRA, the Collection and Handling for In-situ Martian Rock Analysis system. CHIMRA moves, shakes, and portions the sample so that the rover can deliver controlled amounts to its internal laboratories. NASA describes a 150-micrometer sieve in the system; for comparison, a human hair is about 100 micrometers thick on average. Sieving removes larger fragments and helps provide a consistent feed for the instruments.
CHIMRA can route prepared portions to both CheMin and SAM. The instruments do not receive identical material in the same way or answer the same question: CheMin examines mineral crystal structures, while SAM investigates gases released from a heated portion and identifies their chemical constituents.
CheMin identifies minerals with X-ray diffraction
CheMin, short for Chemistry and Mineralogy, receives loose powdered sample and directs X-rays through it. The crystal lattice of each mineral diffracts the X-rays at characteristic angles. The resulting pattern is matched and modeled to determine which minerals are present and in what proportions. This is especially valuable when minerals have similar overall chemistry but different crystal structures that cannot be distinguished reliably by a simple elemental reading.

| CheMin specification or result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Up to 85 milligrams per sample | The stated capacity for a CheMin analysis; it is not a universal mass for every Curiosity sample. |
| 32 cells on the sample wheel | The wheel includes positions for Martian samples and calibration materials. |
| 10–30 hours per analysis | NASA’s stated duration, spread over multiple nights rather than one continuous run. |
| 42 soil and rock samples by December 2022 | A cumulative mission count reported by NASA at that date, not a current total. |
Mineral identification can reveal whether a rock formed from volcanic material, interacted with water, precipitated from a solution, or experienced later alteration. CheMin can identify minerals associated with environments that might preserve biosignatures. That association is a clue about past conditions, not a detection of life.
SAM studies gases, volatiles, and organic compounds
The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) suite receives a portion of the processed powder in a small oven. Heating most samples to about 1,000 °C releases gases from minerals, salts, trapped fluids, and organic compounds. SAM then analyzes those gases with three complementary techniques:
- Gas chromatography separates compounds so they can be examined individually.
- Mass spectrometry measures the mass-to-charge patterns of molecules and fragments.
- Tunable laser spectroscopy measures selected gases with high chemical specificity.
NASA’s Curiosity instrument information gives SAM sensitivity below one part per billion for an organic compound. Sensitivity describes the ability to detect a small amount under the instrument’s conditions; it does not mean that every detected organic molecule is biological. Organics can form through non-biological chemistry, arrive in meteorites, or be altered by radiation and geological processes. Their identity, abundance, degradation products, and setting all matter.

How Perseverance examines and caches a core
Inspect the target and its geological twin
Perseverance’s sampling campaign begins with a detailed examination of the intended target and a nearby “geologic twin”—a similar surface or rock used for context. Mastcam-Z images provide stereo color views and geological documentation. SuperCam supplies remote laser and spectroscopic observations. These observations help the team understand the target before any material is removed.

Abrade the weathered surface
Perseverance uses a rotary-percussive drill system and a separate abrasion tool. The abrasion tool grinds away weathered coating and creates a relatively flat, fresh patch for inspection. NASA described an abrasion patch about 2 inches (5 centimeters) across in a 2021 account. Grinding produces cuttings that can cover the exposed surface, so the rover must image and assess the patch after the operation; the debris itself is part of the operational problem, not automatically the desired sample.
Measure the fresh surface with several instruments
The rover then combines proximity instruments before coring:
- SHERLOC uses spectroscopic methods to map minerals and organic compounds at fine spatial scales.
- PIXL measures elemental chemistry across tiny points and produces chemical maps.
- WATSON supplies close-up color and texture imaging.
- SuperCam and Mastcam-Z add remote chemistry, spectra, and broader geological context.
NASA’s pre-sampling workflow emphasizes this multi-instrument survey because a core has limited volume. Scientists want to know exactly where it came from and how its chemistry relates to the surrounding rock before sealing it.

After a target passes the selection process, Perseverance cores rock into a sample tube. The rover images the tube and its contents, then seals it for caching. NASA’s 2021 description of the first sample said the core was slightly thicker than a pencil. The sealed tube is a preserved geological specimen, not a powder delivered to an onboard CheMin or SAM instrument.

A 2021 NASA release described later missions returning such tubes to Earth for laboratory analysis. That wording records the plan at that time; it is not a guarantee of return or a current schedule. If returned, the cores could be examined with Earth-based instruments that are larger, more sensitive, and more flexible than rover hardware. Until then, Perseverance’s in-situ measurements provide the context needed to interpret each cached specimen.

How scientists turn measurements into an interpretation
Separate the types of evidence
An elemental abundance from APXS or PIXL does not identify a mineral by itself. Conversely, CheMin’s mineral phases do not provide a complete inventory of every trace element or organic compound. ChemCam and SuperCam can survey targets rapidly, while contact instruments and laboratory-style analyses provide more localized detail. Scientists preserve those distinctions when combining datasets.
Test geological explanations against multiple observations
Suppose a rock contains minerals commonly produced or preserved in the presence of water. Researchers compare that result with textures, veins, sedimentary layering, oxidation state, and nearby soil chemistry. SAM’s gases may reveal bound water, carbon dioxide, sulfur compounds, or organic molecules that refine the interpretation. Agreement among independent measurements strengthens a geological explanation; disagreement can indicate mixed material, contamination by dust, instrumental limits, or a more complicated history.
Keep habitability, organics, and life separate
“Habitable” means that conditions could have supported life as we understand it. “Organic” describes carbon-containing chemistry, not biological origin. A biosignature is a pattern that is difficult to explain without biology, considered in its geological context. Curiosity’s instruments can identify minerals and compounds relevant to those questions, but Curiosity cannot determine that life is present. Perseverance’s cached cores are intended to enable more demanding laboratory tests if they are eventually returned.
Why the process takes time
Every measurement is constrained by rover power, communications, temperature, mechanical positioning, sample quantity, and the need to protect hardware. CheMin analyses alone can occupy 10 to 30 hours spread across multiple nights. Teams also need time to check data quality, compare a target with neighboring rocks, model mineral mixtures, and decide what the next observation should be. A scientifically useful conclusion therefore emerges from a sequence of carefully planned observations rather than from one dramatic reading.
Quick Recap
What a rover result can—and cannot—claim
- It can establish that particular minerals, elements, textures, or volatile compounds are consistent with the measured target.
- It can support interpretations of water-related alteration, volcanic activity, sediment transport, or preservation potential when multiple observations agree.
- It cannot automatically prove that a mineral formed in water, that an organic compound was produced by life, or that life existed on Mars.
- It cannot treat every number as universal: sample mass, analysis duration, sieve size, abrasion dimensions, and cumulative counts are instrument- or event-specific figures.
- It cannot imply that all Martian samples come back to Earth. Curiosity analyzes prepared material on Mars, while Perseverance stores selected cores for possible future return.
