Scientists determine the gases in an exoplanet’s atmosphere by spectroscopy: they spread the planet’s light, or starlight filtered by the planet, into wavelengths and look for brightness changes. Atoms and molecules absorb particular wavelengths, so missing or weakened portions of the spectrum act as molecular fingerprints rather than as a direct atmospheric sample.
For a planet more than 100 light-years away, the process relies on photons collected by a telescope. During a transit, some starlight crosses the atmosphere around the planet’s edge. Comparing that filtered light with the host star’s normal spectrum produces a transmission spectrum from which atmospheric constituents can be inferred.
What spectroscopy reveals
A spectrum records how much light arrives at each wavelength. Gases do not absorb all wavelengths equally: their atoms and molecules interact with specific portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. NASA summarizes the principle this way: “Different types of chemicals in the atmosphere absorb different colors of the starlight spectrum, so the colors that are missing tell astronomers which atoms and molecules are present.” You can read the agency’s explanation in NASA’s Webb exoplanet research overview.
The result is an inference. A measured feature is compared with laboratory and theoretical molecular signatures to find which compositions are consistent with the data. Scientists do not collect a bottle of gas from the distant world, and a single feature rarely proves an entire atmospheric recipe by itself. Signal strength, temperature, pressure, clouds, hazes and the part of the atmosphere being observed all affect the interpretation.

Why a transit is useful
When an exoplanet passes in front of its star from Earth’s viewpoint, the planet blocks most of its own disk. A much smaller fraction of starlight travels through the atmospheric rim before reaching the telescope. Gases in that rim remove selected wavelengths. The wavelength-dependent change in the star’s apparent brightness is called a transmission spectrum. NASA describes this transit method in its exoplanet detection and characterization guide.
How a transmission spectrum is measured
- Establish a stellar baseline. Astronomers observe the host star outside the transit and record its brightness across the instrument’s wavelength range. This baseline captures the star’s ordinary spectrum and helps identify changes caused by the planet rather than by the star or the detector.
- Observe the transit. The telescope records the same star while the planet crosses its face. The observation must cover enough of the event to measure the star before, during and after the crossing.
- Compare the two datasets. Researchers divide or otherwise model the in-transit spectrum against the out-of-transit baseline. The planet’s opaque disk produces the main dimming; the atmosphere adds wavelength-specific differences around that signal.
- Locate spectral features. A rise in the planet’s effective size or a dip in transmitted light at particular wavelengths can indicate absorption by a gas. Features are checked against known signatures for molecules and atoms.
- Fit physical atmosphere models. Teams vary composition, temperature, pressure structure, clouds and hazes in models and calculate which synthetic spectra best match the measurements. The output is usually a range of plausible abundances or a detection significance, not an exact inventory.
- Quantify uncertainty. Astronomers test how noise, stellar variability, instrument systematics and model assumptions could create or hide a feature. More collected photons generally improve confidence, while a muted feature can leave only an upper limit or a broad set of possible compositions.
This sequence turns a tiny color-dependent brightness change into evidence about a remote atmosphere. The method and its limitations are outlined in NASA’s explanation of how Webb studies exoplanets.
Which part of the atmosphere is being sampled?
Transmission spectroscopy primarily probes the atmospheric edge, where starlight passes tangentially through long slanted paths. It is therefore most sensitive to gases at relatively low pressures above the deeper atmosphere. The result is not a global average and does not necessarily describe conditions at the surface or on the planet’s night side.

Three complementary ways to study an exoplanet atmosphere
Transit spectroscopy is not the only technique. Each approach measures a different kind of light and samples a different atmospheric column.
| Method | Light measured | What it can show | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmission spectroscopy | Starlight filtered through the atmospheric rim during a transit | Absorption features from gases in the planet’s upper, edge-on atmosphere | Clouds and hazes can mute features; the sampled region is limited and generally at relatively low pressures |
| Thermal emission and phase observations | The planet’s own infrared or other emitted light at different orbital phases | Heat emission, temperature contrasts and changes between the visible day and night sides | The signal is faint and must be separated from the star and interpreted with a model of atmospheric structure |
| Direct imaging and spectroscopy | Planetary reflected or thermal light separated from the much brighter star | The atmosphere of the visible hemisphere without requiring a transit; reflected-light or thermal spectral features | Starlight suppression and contrast are difficult, and the observed hemisphere is only one part of the planet |
NASA describes combining heat-emission maps with spectroscopy to model atmospheric structure, as well as the distinct sampling provided by direct imaging, in its Webb observing methods guide. The choice of method determines whether a result describes an atmospheric edge, an emitting hemisphere or a reflected-light view.
How scientists decide whether a gas is really detected
Compare the shape, not just one point
A credible identification uses the pattern of absorption across several wavelengths. Researchers compare the observed spectrum with calculated spectra for candidate molecules and with models that omit them. A molecule is favored when including it improves the fit in a physically consistent atmosphere, not merely because one noisy bin happens to be low.
Account for the star and the instrument
Starspots, faculae and ordinary stellar variability can alter the baseline. Detectors also have wavelength-dependent sensitivity and calibration errors. Teams use repeated observations, reference measurements and instrument models to distinguish an atmospheric feature from a change in the star or the observatory.

Use photon counts to set confidence
Atmospheric signatures can be extremely faint. Collecting more light—through a larger aperture, longer integration or multiple transits—reduces random uncertainty, although it cannot automatically remove systematic errors. NASA’s guide to reading an Earth-like transmission spectrum emphasizes that the apparent features depend strongly on how much light is collected.
Report limits when the spectrum is muted
A flat spectrum does not prove that an atmosphere is absent. High clouds, hazes, low abundances or insufficient signal can all suppress recognizable features. In such cases, scientists may report that a particular abundance is constrained below a limit, or that several compositions remain compatible with the observations.
JWST example: water vapor on WASP-96 b
NASA’s first published Webb transmission spectrum of the hot gas giant WASP-96 b showed clear signs of water vapor that earlier spectra had only hinted at. The observation is documented in NASA’s release on Webb’s WASP-96 b result.
What was actually measured
The spectrum covered wavelengths from 0.6 to 2.8 microns. NASA reports that the analysis used 280 individual spectra captured during the observation. Combining those measurements produced enough sensitivity to reveal the characteristic pattern associated with water vapor in this particular target.

Why this is not a universal precision benchmark
WASP-96 b is a favorable target for transmission work: its atmosphere is inflated and its host star is bright enough for Webb to collect a useful signal. The result demonstrates what a sensitive observatory can reveal under good conditions, not what every exoplanet spectrum will look like. NASA notes that Earth-like atmospheric features are challenging to detect because the signals can be extraordinarily faint. A smaller, cooler planet, a dimmer star or a cloudy atmosphere may require many observations and still yield only broad constraints.
Why distance does not prevent the measurement
The telescope does not resolve individual atmospheric particles at a distance of more than 100 light-years. Instead, it gathers an enormous number of photons that have traveled from the star-and-planet system to Earth. A transit repeats a geometrical alignment, allowing astronomers to compare the star’s light with and without the atmospheric filter. Sensitive spectrographs preserve wavelength information even though the source appears as a point of light.
Distance still matters because photon flux falls with distance. Fewer photons mean larger statistical uncertainties and longer observing times. The host star’s brightness, the planet’s size and orbit, the atmosphere’s scale height and the telescope’s wavelength coverage all affect whether a feature is measurable.

Calibrate and clean the spectra
Raw detector readings are corrected for dark current, flat-field response, wavelength calibration and other instrument effects. Cosmic-ray hits and unusable intervals are flagged. The calibrated stellar spectra are then aligned so that a wavelength bin in one exposure corresponds to the same physical wavelength in another.
Build the differential spectrum
Out-of-transit exposures define the star’s reference level. In-transit exposures are compared with that reference while the changing transit geometry and overall light curve are modeled. The final transmission spectrum shows how the planet’s effective radius varies with wavelength.
Test atmospheric models
Model grids or retrieval algorithms vary molecular abundances, temperature, pressure, clouds and haze opacity. The analysis should include alternatives such as a cloud-free atmosphere, a high-cloud atmosphere and a spectrum containing no detectable feature. Agreement among physically plausible models is stronger evidence than a result that depends on one narrow set of assumptions.

Cross-check with other observations
Thermal-emission measurements, additional transits and observations at different wavelengths can test whether a proposed molecule remains consistent. Agreement across methods is valuable because transmission, emission and direct imaging view different regions and are affected by different systematics.
Common misunderstandings
- “A color in the data is a photograph of the gas.” It is not. The spectrum is a measurement of brightness versus wavelength, interpreted through molecular physics.
- “One absorption dip proves a molecule beyond doubt.” Features can overlap, and noise or stellar activity can mimic structure. Scientists compare broad patterns and quantify competing explanations.
- “No feature means no atmosphere.” Clouds, hazes, low abundance and insufficient photons can all hide an atmosphere’s signatures.
- “A transit spectrum describes the whole planet.” It samples the atmospheric edge along the star-to-observer path. Emission and direct-imaging observations probe different portions of the world.
- “The WASP-96 b result applies to Earth-sized planets.” The observation is a demonstration on a favorable hot giant. Earth-like signals are substantially harder to measure.
What the evidence can establish
Exoplanet atmospheric spectroscopy can identify gases whose wavelength fingerprints are sufficiently strong and distinctive in the collected data, constrain temperatures and atmospheric structure when emission or phase information is available, and rule out some compositions. It cannot provide a direct sample, a guaranteed surface inventory or a complete global weather map from one spectrum. The scientifically correct conclusion is therefore a model-based statement—such as “water vapor is consistent with the measured transmission features at this confidence”—together with the uncertainties imposed by faint light, clouds, hazes, stellar behavior and the limited region observed.
