NFC is the short-range wireless technology that lets a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone or watch communicate with a contactless payment reader. To pay, enable NFC, select Samsung Pay in the contactless-payment settings, then choose and authenticate a card in Samsung Wallet. The exact options depend on your Galaxy model, software version, region, card issuer, and the reader.
What NFC does on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung defines NFC on Galaxy devices as short-range wireless communication used for features including Samsung Wallet payments, transportation cards, and data transfer between nearby devices. For an in-store payment, the phone or watch communicates with a compatible contactless reader; Samsung Wallet presents the selected payment card after you authenticate.
NFC is the communication method, not the payment card or the wallet app. Switching NFC on and choosing a default contactless-payment service are separate setup steps.

How to enable Samsung Wallet payments
Samsung’s US guidance uses these Settings steps. Labels and menu locations can differ by model or software version.

- Open Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment.
- Turn on NFC.
- Open Contactless payments and choose Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay is accessed through the Samsung Wallet app.
Samsung’s instructions are for the US; Wallet availability, settings terminology, and supported features may vary elsewhere.
How to pay at a contactless reader
- Open Samsung Wallet and select the card you want to use.
- Authenticate using an available fingerprint or Wallet PIN option.
- Hold the back of the phone close to the reader’s contactless area, then follow any prompts on the terminal.
A thick case may need to be removed. Samsung also supports in-store payments on compatible Galaxy watches; hold the watch close to the contactless reader and follow the prompts.

What must be compatible
- Your device: The Galaxy phone or watch must support the relevant Wallet feature. Support and settings can vary by model and software version.
- Your card: Card eligibility depends on the issuer. If Wallet will not let you add a card, Samsung advises checking with the issuer.
- The payment terminal: The reader must accept the contactless payment method. Samsung says Wallet will not work with readers that do not support NFC or MST.
Why a Samsung NFC payment might fail
- NFC is off or another wallet is selected: Check that NFC is enabled and Samsung Pay is selected as the contactless-payment service.
- The phone is not positioned at the reader: Move the back of the device close to the terminal’s contactless area and follow its prompts.
- A case or accessory is interfering: Remove a thick case and retry. Samsung warns that some non-genuine covers—especially ones containing magnets, cards, or metal—can interfere with NFC.
- The terminal does not support the payment method: A non-compatible reader cannot complete the Wallet payment.
- The card is not eligible: Issuer support can determine whether a card can be added to Wallet.
What Samsung says about payment security
Samsung describes Wallet payments as sending a token to the merchant and requiring fingerprint or Wallet PIN authentication before payment information is sent to the terminal. This is Samsung’s description of its own service, not an independent security assessment.
