Short answer: Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones both can condense some message notifications, but they do not use the same feature. Samsung puts conversation summaries and notification ranking under Notification highlights. Google’s documented AI summaries are a Pixel feature for eligible phones, while Android 16’s Notification Organizer mainly groups and silences lower-priority alerts rather than summarizing messages. Your phone model, software version, language, region, app, battery level and whether the screen is off determine what you actually receive.

The comparison below reflects Samsung U.S. and Canada support guidance and Google’s English Pixel help documentation current through October 13, 2026. Feature lists can change, so verify the settings on your exact handset before relying on a summary for an important message.

What the two systems actually summarize

Samsung Galaxy: Notification highlights has two separate controls

Samsung’s Notification highlights combines two related functions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Summarize notifications creates a condensed version of conversational notifications. Samsung says it uses notification history from the previous 24 hours.
  • Prioritize notifications moves important alerts higher in the notification panel. It analyzes user information and notification content; Samsung says data used for this prioritization is processed on the device.

These controls are related in the same feature area but are not the same operation. You can turn summarization on while leaving prioritization off, or configure them differently for individual apps. A higher position in the shade does not mean that Samsung generated a text summary.

Google Pixel: AI notification summaries are message-focused

Google’s Pixel Phone Help describes AI notification summaries as condensed views of unread messages. The documentation names popular messaging notifications, including Google Messages, Android Messages and WhatsApp, and also refers to longer messages and group chats. The function is an opt-in setting and is off by default in that help guidance.

Google documents the feature for Pixel 9 and later phones, excluding the A-series, with English or Japanese supported and one of those languages set as the primary system language. This is not a promise that every Android phone has the same implementation. Another manufacturer can ship its own summary tool, with different eligibility and controls.

Android 16 Notification Organizer is different

Android 16 also includes Notification Organizer, which Google describes separately from AI message summaries. Organizer groups and silences selected lower-priority notifications, with categories such as Promotions and news and Social and suggested content. It is a clutter-management feature, not a tool that rewrites a conversation into a digest.

Google’s Android 16 announcements also discuss live updates from compatible apps and grouped notifications. Live updates keep an ongoing activity visible; grouping places related alerts together. Neither should be treated as proof that your handset supports Pixel’s AI summary feature.

Samsung Galaxy versus Google Pixel at a glance

Question Samsung Galaxy Notification highlights Google Pixel / Android
Primary job Summarizes conversational notifications and can rank important alerts. Summarizes unread messages and longer message or group-chat notifications on eligible Pixel phones.
Time window Notification history from the previous 24 hours. Google’s cited help page does not state a fixed history window.
Is sorting built in? Yes, through the separate Prioritize notifications control. Notification Organizer is a separate Android feature, not part of AI summaries.
Documented devices Supported Galaxy models and software; current Samsung guidance covers One UI 8.5 or later and Galaxy S26-series guidance, with regional differences. Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series, according to Pixel Phone Help.
Languages Samsung publishes supported-language lists that can change; prioritization uses the system language. English and Japanese for summaries, with the primary system language set accordingly.
App coverage Samsung publishes supported-app lists, which can change. Popular messaging apps are supported, including Google Messages, Android Messages and WhatsApp, subject to Google’s eligibility rules.
User controls Separate prioritization and summarization switches, including per-app controls. One Notification summaries switch and controls to exclude individual apps.
Documented trigger limits Samsung troubleshooting guidance mentions screen off, at least 30% charge, no Power saving, minimum notification length and waiting periods. Short notifications, mixed languages or emoji that prevent language detection may not summarize; the screen must be off briefly.
Accuracy information Samsung warns that summaries may not always be accurate. The cited Google help material explains when a summary may not be generated but supplies no comparative accuracy measurement.

Which phones can use each feature?

Galaxy eligibility is model- and software-dependent

Samsung Canada’s Galaxy S26 guide describes Notification highlights on the S26 series. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance describes the feature on phones running One UI 8.5 or later, including the Galaxy S26 series and newer models. Those pages are regional guides that can be updated, not a permanent worldwide compatibility list.

On a Galaxy phone, open Settings and search for Notification highlights. If the result is missing, check the installed One UI version, your model’s support page and the Samsung Members or regional support documentation for your country. A feature appearing in a marketing description for one Galaxy generation does not establish availability on every older model.

Pixel eligibility is narrower in Google’s current help page

Google’s current consumer instructions specify Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices. The summary language must be English or Japanese, and the primary system language must match one of those choices. Availability on another Android manufacturer’s handset cannot be inferred from the Pixel instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android 16 platform announcements describe capabilities that manufacturers may adopt or adapt. The practical test is the notification settings on your particular phone, not the Android version number alone.

How to enable or disable summaries

On an eligible Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Notification summaries.
  4. Turn summaries on or off. Use the app controls on the same screen to exclude a specific messaging app.

If Notification summaries is not listed, check that the phone is a Pixel 9 or later non-A-series model, update the system software, and set English or Japanese as the primary system language. Organizer settings, where available, are separate and should not be used as a substitute for the summaries switch.

  2. Open the feature and review the separate switches for Summarize notifications and Prioritize notifications.
  3. Use the app-level controls to allow or block summarization and prioritization for individual supported apps.
  4. To stop summaries entirely, switch off summarization while leaving prioritization unchanged, or disable both controls if you also do not want ranked alerts.

Samsung’s support pages do not guarantee one identical menu path for every model. If search does not find the feature, verify your One UI version and consult the support guide for your region.

Why a summary may not appear

Samsung conditions

Samsung’s general guidance cautions that a summary might not be produced when the battery is low or Power saving is enabled. Its troubleshooting instructions add operational conditions for applicable software: the screen must be off, the device must have at least 30% charge, and Power saving must be off. Samsung also documents minimum notification-length and waiting-period requirements, so a short or very recent alert may not produce an immediate result.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

These are troubleshooting conditions for Samsung’s implementation, not universal Android rules. If a supported conversation never summarizes, check all of the following:

  • The app is included in Samsung’s current supported-app list for your region and software build.
  • Summarization is enabled for that app, rather than only the global feature.
  • The phone has at least 30% charge and is not in Power saving mode.
  • The screen has been off long enough for processing to occur.
  • The notification contains enough text and has remained available for the documented waiting period.
  • The conversation is still present in notification history and has not been dismissed.

Pixel conditions

Google says Pixel summaries may not generate for short notifications. Mixed languages or emoji can prevent language detection, and a summary may not be created while you are actively using the phone. Google also requires the screen to be off for a moment before processing occurs.

For a missing Pixel summary, confirm that the notification is unread, the app is not excluded, the message is long enough to summarize, the primary language is English or Japanese, and the screen has been off briefly. A notification that is already open on screen is less likely to meet the documented trigger condition.

Language, region and app differences matter

Samsung and Google publish support lists rather than promising universal coverage. Samsung’s lists of apps and languages can change, and Samsung’s U.S. and Canadian guides do not necessarily describe every market. Google’s summary documentation covers English and Japanese, while its Notification Organizer guidance has additional conditions: Pixel 9 or later excluding A-series, English as the primary system language, and availability in Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom or the United States.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not transfer Organizer’s country requirements to AI summaries. Google lists those requirements separately. Likewise, do not assume that a language supported for one Galaxy AI function is supported for notification summaries or prioritization.

Accuracy, privacy and when to open the original message

Samsung explicitly states in its support documentation: “Summaries may not always be accurate.” Google’s cited support material does not publish a head-to-head accuracy rate or a study comparing Pixel and Galaxy output. There is therefore no evidence-based winner for factual accuracy, speed or usefulness without a controlled test using the same messages, languages, apps and battery conditions.

A summary is a convenience layer over the notification, not a replacement for the conversation. Open the original thread before acting on a payment request, address, deadline, medical instruction, security alert or any message where a missing qualifier could change the meaning. Summaries can omit context, and a notification itself may not contain the sender’s complete message.

Samsung says data used for notification prioritization is processed on the device. That statement applies to prioritization; it should not be expanded into a blanket privacy claim about every Galaxy AI operation. Google’s cited help page explains feature behavior and controls but does not provide a comparative privacy specification in the material covered here.

Which approach fits common situations?

You want a quick digest of active chats

Either implementation can help when several unread conversations arrive while the screen is off. Galaxy adds the option to rank alerts, whereas Pixel keeps summary generation and Organizer separate. Choose based first on whether your existing phone is eligible and whether your messaging app and language are supported.

You mainly want fewer low-value alerts

Notification Organizer on supported Pixel phones is aimed at grouping and silencing lower-priority categories. Samsung’s prioritization can move important alerts higher, but it is not the same as suppressing promotions or social updates. Use the system’s ordinary per-app notification channels when you need deterministic blocking.

You use group chats or long messages

Google specifically describes longer messages and group-chat notifications in its Pixel documentation. Samsung’s wording centers on conversational notifications and the previous 24-hour notification history. Neither source supplies a guarantee that every group-chat format or every messaging app will be summarized.

You share a phone language with multiple languages in messages

Pixel documentation warns that mixed languages or emoji can prevent language detection. Samsung’s supported-language and app lists may differ by software and region. If summaries disappear only for multilingual conversations, read the full notification rather than assuming the feature is broken.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Android summaries” means every Android phone. Google’s concrete consumer instructions apply to eligible Pixel phones. Samsung and other manufacturers may implement different tools.
  • Organizer is another name for summaries. Organizer manages categories by grouping or silencing them; it does not replace the Pixel Notification summaries switch.
  • Prioritization rewrites messages. Samsung’s prioritization changes alert order. Only the separate summarization control creates condensed conversation text.
  • Every notification is eligible. Both vendors describe app, language, length and timing limits. A supported phone can still skip a particular alert.
  • A summary is authoritative. Samsung warns about possible inaccuracy, and neither vendor’s cited documentation promises that a condensed notification preserves every qualification.
  • A new Android version guarantees the feature. Platform announcements do not establish rollout on every OEM handset or region.

Cost and upgrade questions

The support material describes these capabilities as phone software features and does not identify a separate accessory, paid add-on or subscription as a requirement. You do not need to assume that buying a Galaxy S26 or a Pixel is the first troubleshooting step. Check your current model, software build, language and region first. If your handset is outside the documented eligibility range, an upgrade may be the only way to obtain a particular vendor implementation, but the guides do not establish a universal upgrade requirement.

Samsung’s current product guidance specifically identifies the Samsung Galaxy S26 smartphone as an example of a Galaxy device covered by its Notification highlights material. Google identifies eligible Pixel 9-and-later non-A-series phones. Those product references describe device classes, not a promise that every unit in every country has the toggle immediately.

How to decide without a misleading “winner”

  1. Identify the handset: record the exact Galaxy model and One UI version, or confirm that the phone is a Pixel 9-or-later non-A-series model.
  2. Check language and country: compare the phone’s primary system language and region with the current manufacturer guidance.
  3. Check the app: verify that your messaging app appears in the supported list and is not excluded in notification settings.
  4. Separate the goal: choose summaries for message condensation, prioritization for ranking alerts, and Organizer for grouping or silencing categories.
  5. Check operating conditions: on Galaxy, keep charge at or above the documented 30% threshold and disable Power saving; on Pixel, let the screen turn off briefly.
  6. Validate important messages: compare the generated text with the original conversation before taking consequential action.

Because the published documentation contains no controlled comparison, claims that Galaxy is more accurate, Pixel is faster, or one platform saves a specific amount of time would go beyond the documented facts. The defensible difference is functional: Samsung combines conversation summaries with a separately configurable ranking tool, while Google documents summaries as a Pixel-specific feature and treats Android 16 Organizer as a different notification-management function.

What to check after an update

Feature eligibility is volatile. After a One UI or Android update, recheck the Notification highlights or Notification summaries screen, supported-app and language lists, battery requirements, and any regional notices. A missing toggle can mean an unsupported model, a changed menu, an excluded app or a rollout that has not reached your device; it does not by itself prove that the entire platform lacks notification AI.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Galaxy phone summarize text notifications?

It may, if the model, One UI version, region, language and app are supported and the separate Summarize notifications control is enabled. Search Settings for Notification highlights and check Samsung’s current list for your market.

Which Samsung phones have Notification highlights?

Samsung’s current U.S. guidance covers phones running One UI 8.5 or later, including the Galaxy S26 series and newer models, while Samsung Canada documents the S26 series. Because lists can change by region and update, confirm the exact model rather than relying on the Galaxy brand alone.

Does Android summarize group chats?

Google’s Pixel documentation refers to longer messages and group-chat notifications, but only on eligible Pixel phones and supported apps. It does not establish that every Android handset or every group-chat format will be summarized.

How do I turn notification summaries off?

On Pixel, go to Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries and switch the feature off, or exclude individual apps. On Galaxy, open Notification highlights and switch off Summarize notifications; you can leave Prioritize notifications enabled if you still want ranked alerts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my summary disappear when I opened the phone?

Both implementations use screen-off conditions. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance requires the screen to be off and adds charge, Power saving, length and waiting conditions. Google says summaries may not generate while you are actively using the phone and requires the screen to be off briefly.

Are Samsung summaries more accurate than Pixel summaries?

No comparative accuracy figure is published in the cited support material. Samsung explicitly warns that summaries may not always be accurate. Compare the original message before acting on any consequential detail.

Is Notification Organizer the same as AI summaries?

No. Organizer groups and silences selected lower-priority categories such as Promotions and news or Social and suggested content. AI summaries condense unread message notifications. They have separate settings and eligibility conditions.

Do I need to buy a new phone?

Not necessarily. First check your current phone’s model, software, region, language and notification settings. Samsung and Google document different eligibility ranges, and a missing setting may reflect an unsupported app or rollout rather than a need to upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Galaxy Notification highlights joins conversation summaries with a separately configurable prioritization tool, while Google’s AI summaries are documented for eligible Pixel 9-and-later non-A-series phones. Android 16 Notification Organizer is a different clutter-management feature. Check your exact model, One UI or Android build, language, region, app, battery and screen state, then open the original message before acting on any important summary.
