SAMPLES turns a molecule’s structure and selected properties into a musical sequence that can be edited and decoded back into a molecular structure. The 2023 research demonstrates a creative way to interact with molecular representations—not a system proven to discover effective or safe drugs.
How does SAMPLES turn a molecule into music?
SAMPLES stands for Sonic Architecture for Molecule Production and Live-Input Encoding Software. In the method, selected physicochemical properties help determine a musical key, while the molecule’s SELFIES string—a text representation of molecular structure—is mapped to a sequence of notes. The authors describe assigning property values to bins associated with keys and translating SELFIES tokens into note shifts. The 2023 paper in Digital Discovery explains the design.
This is an engineered encoding, not a natural law linking a particular key to a chemical property. In the implementation described by the authors, the property aggregation is dominated largely by molecular weight. The resulting music therefore reflects the choices in the mapping as well as the molecule’s encoded structure.

Yes. In the paper’s demonstrations, SAMPLES also decodes musical notes into molecular structures. That makes the representation interactive: editing notes can produce a related but distinct structure, rather than merely changing how an unchanged molecule sounds.

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.
- If you’re not in love with it for whatever reason, we’ll give you a full replacement or refund—no questions asked. If you have any doubt, please tell us. With nothing to worry about, or even to share with your friends, try it now.
The authors also demonstrate decoding a melody composed by a person. In that example, the composer deliberately used chemistry knowledge to favor a note mapped to carbon. This illustrates that a human can make choices within the encoding; it does not show that arbitrary music will reliably produce useful chemistry.
How MusicVAE and CROSSFADE fit in
The researchers combine SAMPLES with MusicVAE, a model for generating musical sequences. They use it to interpolate between melodies representing input molecules, then decode an interpolated melody into a molecular structure. They call this workflow CROSSFADE. The paper presents it as a way to explore structures between selected inputs through musical interpolation, not as evidence that the resulting molecules share biological effects or have therapeutic value.

What the musical representation does—and does not—tell you
| Question | What the study demonstrates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| What is encoded? | Selected physicochemical properties influence the key, while a SELFIES representation supplies the note sequence. | That musical features are a universal or chemically privileged description of molecules. |
| Can people interact with it? | Notes can be edited, and a human-composed melody is decoded in a demonstration. | That musical editing is easier or more informative than every conventional molecular tool. |
| Can it be decoded? | The demonstrations decode melodies into molecular structures. | That every decoded structure is chemically validated or experimentally useful. |
| Does it establish drug potential? | No therapeutic validation is reported in the demonstrations. | Synthesis, biological activity, safety, efficacy, or clinical utility. |
The authors frame sonification as a way to encode information across musical dimensions while adding a new form of interaction. That is a proposal for an additional representation, not a comparative benchmark showing music to be superior to molecular line drawings, graphs, strings, or fingerprints. Musical resemblance should not be treated as evidence of biological or pharmacological resemblance.
Important limits when interpreting generated structures
- The mapping is designed by the researchers; the musical key and note pattern depend on its encoding choices.
- The paper warns that generated structures may contain undefined stereocenters. Stereochemistry can matter to a molecule’s properties and biological behavior, so a decoded structure requires appropriate chemical review.
- The reported work consists of computational and interactive demonstrations. A structure produced by the workflow is not thereby synthesized, tested, safe, effective, or suitable as a drug.
