A “safety bubble detector” is an informal name for equipment that senses when a person enters a protected area near a robot. In industrial settings, the precise terms include presence-sensing protective equipment and, for one common device type, a safety laser scanner. The sensor can provide information that helps a robot slow down or stop, but safe operation depends on the complete robot application, its controls, and its validation—not on a detector alone.
What does “safety bubble detector” mean?
“Safety bubble detector” is a reader-friendly metaphor, not a formal device category in the standards cited here. The monitored space is usually a configured field, area, or plane—not a literal sphere surrounding the robot. A person or body part entering that space can trigger a safety-related signal to the robot cell’s control system.
One relevant device is a safety laser scanner. It monitors a configured area and can be used as part of safeguarding for a robot cell. Other protective devices, such as light curtains, may also be used, depending on the application. The appropriate device and its configuration depend on the hazards and layout of the specific cell.
ISO 10218-2:2025 describes a presence-sensing device as sensitive protective equipment that creates a sensing field, area, or plane to detect a body part or person and provides a signal to reduce risk. This describes a role in a safety system; it does not mean every sensor, scanner, or robot will automatically respond in the same way. Read the ISO 10218-2:2025 preview.

How does a safety scanner work with a robot?
- A field is configured. The scanner monitors a defined protective zone around or near the robot. The coverage is limited by the selected field, scanner placement, and the workcell layout.
- An intrusion is detected. If someone enters the monitored field, the device sends a safety-related signal to the cell’s safety controls.
- The cell responds according to its design. Depending on the risk assessment and integration, the robot may reduce speed or other limits, or the system may initiate a safety-rated stop.
- The complete function is checked. The sensor, its interface, the robot’s behavior, and the workcell’s operating and restart logic must work together as intended.
The scanner does not independently determine that a workcell is safe. The response depends on how the protective device is integrated with the robot and safety-related controls.
What is speed and separation monitoring?
Speed and separation monitoring (SSM) is a collaborative robot-safety approach in which the system monitors the distance between a person and a robot and maintains a required separation. If a person approaches, a designed safety function can change robot speed or limits, or stop the robot. A protective device can detect an intrusion and provide information used by that function.

ISO’s explanation describes maintaining a minimum distance as a person approaches, with the robot moving away or stopping. Universal Robots also describes external protective devices, including laser scanners and light curtains, as possible inputs in SSM applications where robot speed is adjusted in relation to distance. Do collaborative robots need a safety scanner?
Not necessarily. A “collaborative” label does not establish that a particular robot application is safe, nor does it automatically mean a scanner is required. The need for a scanner or another protective measure depends on the application’s risk assessment, hazards, layout, and chosen safety methods. The workcell integrator must consider the complete application, including the robot, tooling, workpiece, people’s access, and operating procedures.

ISO’s 2025 material treats safety as an application and integration issue: safety functions may be provided by the robot, a protective device, or a combination. A scanner is therefore one possible element of a safeguarding design, not a stand-alone guarantee. Roberta Nelson Shea, Convenor of ISO’s Industrial Robot Safety Working Group, described ISO/TS 15066 as providing “guidelines for the design and implementation of a collaborative workspace that reduces risks to people” in ISO’s 8 March 2016 article. That is a description of the specification, not a guarantee about any particular scanner or workcell. ISO article.
What should you compare when choosing a scanner?
Advertised maximum range alone is not a sound basis for selection. Confirm that the specific model and configuration can detect the required object, cover the necessary area, communicate with the safety controls, and meet the needs of the application.

- Safety performance: Check the applicable safety standards and performance rating for the exact device and configuration.
- Detection and coverage: Confirm minimum detectable object size, protection-zone geometry, scan plane, and coverage in the actual mounting position.
- Range under the required setting: Verify the protection-field distance for the detection size and operating mode you need. Published maximums may vary by model and setting.
- Response time and safe distance: Obtain the relevant response-time data and account for it in the application’s safe-distance calculation.
- Control-system compatibility: Check safety outputs or communication protocols against the robot and safety controller, as well as required reset, restart, and diagnostic behavior.
- Work environment: Assess mounting, occlusion, reflective surfaces, and environmental limits that could affect the field or its operation.
- Support through the lifecycle: Review configuration, diagnostics, validation requirements, documentation, and ongoing support—not just purchase price or nominal range.
For example, KEYENCE’s SZ-V product line documents configurable zones and safeguarding uses, while its specifications show that detection size, operating mode, model, response time, interfaces, and environmental limits vary by configuration. SICK’s microScan3 is another product line with manufacturer instructions for robot area protection. The applicable model manual and the actual cell design determine details such as field configuration, reset and restart method, robot interface, and validation. Which standards apply, and what do they cover?
The standards below are international standards and a technical specification; they are not a substitute for checking the laws, national or regional adoptions, and machine-specific duties that apply at the worksite. The 2025 editions distinguish robot-level requirements from application integration requirements.

Use the full, applicable standard and local requirements when designing or assessing a real system. The ISO 10218-2 preview provides general framing, but it is not a replacement for the full standard or an application-specific risk assessment.
What must be validated in the workcell?
Validation should establish that the protective function works in the actual configuration and operating conditions. The exact checks depend on the risk assessment and design, but a practical review should cover:

- Whether the chosen detection setting, mounting, and environmental conditions match the device’s specifications.
- Whether the safety signal reaches the intended control function and produces the expected speed change or stop.
- Whether reset and restart behavior prevents unintended motion and follows the application’s safety design.
- Whether configuration, diagnostics, and validation records remain available to people responsible for operating and maintaining the cell.
These checks do not replace competent integration or the applicable standard. They help make clear why a detector’s published range cannot by itself establish the safety of a robot application.
